› Our admissions process focuses on each applicant as an individual. We use a broad-based assessment of suitability which looks at your past achievements and your potential; we aim to assess your capacity to complete your chosen course and to become a valuable contributing member of our community.

› We aim to educate you for life by giving you a broad liberal arts base through our Core Curriculum units, coupled with a powerful combination of theoretical knowledge and practical and professional skills in your chosen degree.

Our History major places a strong emphasis on historiography using a range of texts, both visual and written. Special attention is paid to Australia and its Pacific context, the classical world and its impact in both the early modern and modern worlds, and medieval Europe and its interaction with non-Europeans, especially Jewish and Islamic peoples.

› Education

› Social policy research

› Administration

› Social commentary

PHILOSOPHYAs a Philosophy student you learn to analyse and evaluate arguments about truth, reality, the human person and various systems (political, religious and ethical), as well as exploring logic and epistemology. Particular emphasis is placed on the history of Western philosophy. You are also encouraged to consider the meaning and purpose of human life and, in particular, your own life.

A major in Philosophy covers various areas of philosophical thought designed to develop high-level critical thinking and linguistic skills as well as the ability to defend a reasoned point of view.

Graduates may pursue careers in a wide range of areas including the private, public and not-for-profit sectors such as:

› Academic teaching and research › Business management › Policy development › Politics › Journalism

› International diplomacy and trade

POLITICS & INTERNATIONAL RELATIONSPolitics & International Relations students study issues and build careers within the context of today’s globalised world.

There are three strands in the study of Politics & International Relations at Notre Dame. Australian Politics is designed to familiarise you with the history, institutions and policy-making processes of Australian public and cultural life. The International Relations program takes you well beyond a ‘current affairs’ focus on world politics and imparts critical skills for negotiating the challenges of a global society. Political Theory is designed to provide a substantial philosophical foundation necessary for developing mature political knowledge.

The major trains graduates in research, writing, analysis and communication dealing with domestic and international topics as diverse as terrorism, climate change, the global economy, media and politics, and Australian foreign policy.

Students may pursue careers in:

› Federal Government agencies › International and non-government organisations (NGOs) › Business (local and international) › Journalism and the media › Public relations › Public service › Advertising › Education

› Publishing

SOCIAL JUSTICEA major or minor in Social Justice offers a unique interdisciplinary program exploring the social dimensions of inequality and injustice, as well as approaches to creating a more egalitarian world. Underpinned by principles of equality, dignity and solidarity, foundational units within the program consider the meaning of social justice and human rights, while upper level units draw from a range of disciplines – such as sociology, politics, peace and conflict studies, and development studies - to explore contemporary social problems and approaches to social change.

Graduates may pursue careers with non-government organisations (NGOs), government, international organisations and development agencies in areas such as:

› Global and community development › Human services › Social advocacy › Social policy

SOCIOLOGYSociology is an established discipline which explores the relationship between self and society. It encourages us to question common-sense assumptions, understand how social relations and history shape our everyday lives and challenge social exclusion and inequality. During the course of the major, you will develop technical skills in social research and specialised knowledge in areas such as gender, childhood, genocide, public and social policy, and disability studies.

Sociology offers graduates a systematic framework with which to inform professional practice and make a contribution to society.

With skills in inquiry, analysis and research, Sociology graduates may undertake careers as practitioners within community, government and non-government agencies in roles focusing on:

› Social and consumer research › Social and public policy › Human services › Social advocacy › Education › Public relations › Journalism and the media

› Public service

THEATRE STUDIESNotre Dame’s Theatre Studies program offers a comprehensive overview of theatrical theory and history with practical training in theatre arts. Over half of the courses are presented as hands-on, practical workshops, and students select from a broad range of courses that support a particular area of interest. These include acting, directing, theatre for social change, Shakespearean studies, writing for performance, and production design. A program of public performance provides you with opportunities to present your work to a live audience.

Students develop a wide range of communication skills which are not only applicable to theatre making, but also offer ‘skills for life’. Theatre studies graduates demonstrate high levels of competence in collaborative teamwork, creative problem-solving, public speaking and sound decision-making.

Theatre Studies enables students to pursue careers in:

Challenge your thinking, beliefs and values with a degree in Philosophy. Through tackling the most fundamental questions of existence, you will sharpen invaluable skills required for success in any field – from politics, business and advocacy to research, teaching and academia.

The three-year Bachelor of Philosophy degree embraces a historical approach to provide a critical perspective on the philosophical issues that arise in every aspect of modern life, including technology, health, politics, ethics, history, religion and culture. Your subjects will consider art and aesthetics, metaphysics, logic, political philosophy, language, science and education.

BACHELOR OF PHILOSOPHY

BACHELOR OF PHILOSOPHY / BACHELOR OF THEOLOGY

DURATION: FIVE YEARS FULL-TIMELOAN SCHEME: FEE-HELPSTUDY MODE: FULL-TIME, PART-TIME

Engaging in subject areas as diverse as Sacramental and Moral Theology, Critical Thinking, Logic, Metaphysics and Philosophy of the Human Person, students of philosophy and theology learn to think both critically and creatively. Metaphysics takes human thought to its heights, and helps us to understand and assess big picture concepts of reality. These then inform how we understand what it means to be human. Theology amplifies these concepts, by considering reality in light of the existence of God and the influence of divine grace in human life.

This double degree provides a comprehensive education in both philosophy and theology. In this degree, not only will you learn about philosophy and theology within the Western tradition of thought, but you will also graduate knowing how to think, reason and argue at an advanced level – skills that are in high demand in any career path you choose.

“Australia needs its leaders to be personally engaged with those with whom they interact. I want to help people and that requires an integration of personal touch and workplace skills.”

The Bachelor of Theology is a three-year program designed to provide students with grounding in Biblical and Theological Studies and associated disciplines. It is intended for those who wish to pursue personal and spiritual growth and for those who have specific vocational and ministerial goals. Students can also study Theology as a major or minor in the Bachelor of Arts.

Theology is the necessary qualification for those wishing to exercise various ministries within the Christian community and to contribute to the work of the Church. It is also the necessary basis for graduate theological study and research.

HELP LOANS

Students at The University of Notre Dame Australia are able to pay their fees upfront each semester, or alternatively, eligible students may access the Higher Education Loans Program (HELP).

Students who are Australian Citizens, holders of Permanent Humanitarian Visas and eligible New Zealand Citizens have access to either the Australian Government’s HELP loan schemes HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP.

For example, if you are enrolled in a Bachelor of Education, you may take some courses of study that are classified as education and some that are classified as humanities. In this example your student contribution for the humanities courses will be calculated against the Humanities discipline, while the education courses will be calculated against the Education discipline.

Students taking the Tertiary Pathway Program and who are awarded a Commonwealth Supported Place, will pay NO FEES.

WHAT IS THE PERSONAL STATEMENT AND WHY DO I NEED TO COME FOR AN INTERVIEW?The Personal Statement is a component of your application and is your chance to tell us about you – your interests, your career aspirations and why you wish to study at Notre Dame. The interview is conducted by an academic staff member and is an opportunity for you to discuss your achievements, interests and career aspirations. You are also encouraged to ask questions about your chosen program and life as a Notre Dame student.

ONCE I AM ADMITTED TO NOTRE DAME CAN I CHANGE TO ANOTHER PROGRAM?Changing between programs is possible if you meet the entry requirements for that program. Please complete a change of program form and seek approval from the Dean of the relevant School.

NOTRE DAME IS A PRIVATE UNIVERSITY. DOES THAT MAKE IT MORE EXPENSIVE THAN OTHER UNIVERSITIES?Notre Dame’s tuition fees are similar to those charged by public universities for Australian citizens. There are no up-front tuition fees for Australian Citizens benefiting from Commonwealth Supported Places, often referred to as HECS-HELP places, which are available for some programs, including graduate entry Medicine, undergraduate Nursing and undergraduate Education. For further information on university fees please visit www.studyassist.gov.au.

DO I NEED AN ATAR TO GET IN?No. At Notre Dame we consider your academic performance across years 11 and 12 in the HSC or IB or equivalent to assess whether you can manage the academic content of your preferred degree.

ARE THERE ANY ALTERNATIVE ENTRY PATHWAYS?The Academic Enabling and Support Centre assists students in developing the confidence, readiness and skills to undertake an undergraduate degree. The AESC offers an alternative entry pathway program, the Tertiary Pathway Program (TPP), upon successful completion of which a student can apply for an undergraduate program in the School of Arts & Sciences, Business, Education, Nursing and Philosophy & Theology.

HOW DOES NOTRE DAME COMPARE TO OTHER UNIVERSITIES?On the Federal Government’s Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching website you will see that Notre Dame is the highest rated university in NSW on many critical measures including overall quality of educational experience, learner engagement, skills development and overall employer satisfaction. The QILT website allows you to compare Notre Dame to all other universities on the measures that are important to you.

See how Notre Dame performs at qilt.edu.au.

CAN I DO PART OF MY DEGREE OVERSEAS?Yes, you can. In our Study Abroad program, most degrees include the option for students to travel to partner universities in North America, Asia and Europe and have their studies overseas count towards their program.

DO I HAVE TO BE CATHOLIC TO STUDY AT NOTRE DAME?No. Notre Dame welcomes students of any faith and no faith. We ask that all students be respectful of the University's Catholic ethos and all students must study core units in philosophy, ethics and theology as part of the undergraduate degree. Notre Dame follows the traditions and practices of Catholic higher education which has offered leadership in university education for centuries.
