Software Programs

• Systems-The system unit, also known as a "tower" or "chassis," is the main part of a desktop computer. It includes the motherboard, CPU, RAM, and other components. The system unit also includes the case that houses the internal components of the computer.

• Aplications-Application software is a defined subclass of computer software that employs the capabilities of a computer directly to a task that the user wishes to perform.

• Data-Computer data is information processed or stored by a computer. This information may be in the form of text documents, images, audio clips, software programs, or other types of data.

Hardware

• Keyboard- Help you type onto the computer

• Desktop- The screen of the computer

• Hard Drive- Stores hardware and files

• Mouse- Controls the pointer on the screen

• CD Drive- Inserts a CD to the CPU

Hardware continued…• CPU- Central Processing Unit

• Speaker- Helps listen to music through the computer

• Video Camera- Helps to take picture on the computer.

• RAM- Random Access Memory

• Graphics Card- A printed circuit board that controls the output to a display screen.

Computer History

• 1976Apple: Apple Computers was founded Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs• 1977Apple: Apple Computer’s Apple II, the first personal computer with color

graphics, is demonstrated• 1980Paul Allen and Bill Gates: IBM hires Paul Allen and Bill Gates to create an

operating system for a new PC. They buy the rights to a simple operating system manufactured by Seattle Computer Products and use it as a template to develop DOS.

• 1981Microsoft: MS-DOS Computer Operating System increases its success• 1982WordPerfect: WordPerfect Corporation introduces WordPerfect 1.0 a word

processing program • 1984Apple Macintosh: Apple introduces the Macintosh with mouse and window

interface• 1987Microsoft introduces Microsoft Works• 1990The Internet, World Wide Web & Tim Berners-Lee:  Tim Berners-Lee and

Robert Cailliau propose a 'hypertext' system starting the modern Internet• 1991The World Wide Web: The World Wide Web is launched to the public on

August 6, 1991• 1998Google: Google is founded by Sergey Brin and Larry Page on September 7,

1998

Measurement Terms• Bit: A Bit is the smallest unit of data that a computer uses

• Byte: A Byte is equal to 8 Bits. A Byte can represent 256 states of information, for example, numbers or a combination of numbers and letters.

• Kilobyte: A Kilobyte is approximately 1,000 Bytes, actually 1,024 Bytes depending on which definition is used.

• Megabyte: A Megabyte is approximately 1,000 Kilobytes.

• Gigabyte: A Gigabyte is approximately 1,000 Megabytes. A Gigabyte is still a very common term used these days when referring to disk space or drive storage.

• Terabyte: A Terabyte is approximately one trillion bytes, or 1,000 Gigabytes.

• Petabyte: A Petabyte is approximately 1,000 Terabytes or one million Gigabytes. It's hard to visualize what a Petabyte could hold. 1 Petabyte could hold approximately 20 million 4-door filing cabinets full of text

• Exabyte: An Exabyte is approximately 1,000 Petabytes. Another way to look at it is that an Exabyte is approximately one quintillion bytes or one billion Gigabytes.

• Zettabyte: A Zettabyte is approximately 1,000 Exabytes. • Yottabyte: A Yottabyte is approximately 1,000 Zettabytes. It would take approximately 11

trillion years to download a Yottabyte file from the Internet using high-power broadband. You can compare it to the World Wide Web as the entire Internet almost takes up about a Yottabyte.

The First PC

• Designed in 1971, before microprocessors were invented, the Kenbak-1 had 256 bytes of memory and featured small and medium scale integrated circuits on a single circuit board.

The First Laptop• The First laptop is

called the Osborne 1 by the Osborne Computer Corporation and released in 1981. It is considered the first portable computer. It has a small 5'' screen with two floppy drives on each side of the screen.

Viruses, Worms, and Trojan Horses

• Virus- Computer viruses are small software programs that are designed to spread from one computer to another and to interfere with computer operation.

• Worm- A worm is a computer program that has the ability to copy itself from machine to machine. Worms use up computer processing time and network bandwidth when they replicate, and often carry payloads that do considerable damage

• Trojan Horse- A Trojan horse is a destructive program that masquerades as a benign application. Unlike viruses, Trojan horses do not replicate themselves but they can be just as destructive. One of the most insidious types of Trojan horse is a program that claims to rid your computer of viruses but instead introduces viruses into your system.

Ideas that Might be Used in the Future

• It would be nice to have an all touch computer, no keyboard or mouse.

• Maybe smaller CPUs
