UNDER THE EDGE INCORPORATING THE PARISH MAGAZINE GREAT LONGSTONE, LITTLE LONGSTONE, ROWLAND, HASSOP, MONSAL HEAD, WARDLOW No. 188 September 2014 60p ISSN 1466-8211 Alexandra’s double medal triumph at Pony Euros Little Longstone’s Alexandra Hellings won Individual Dressage bronze to add to a Team Great Britain Dressage silver medal at the recent FEI European Championships for Ponies held at Millstreet, Ireland between July 29th and August 3rd. 15-year old Alexandra, riding 7-year old gelding Der Kleine Lord (‘Lordy’), won her Individual Competition Test bronze medal against a host of competitors from across Europe losing out on the silver by the tiniest of margins. In the team event, with the best three from four rides to count, Alexandra’s excellent score helped secure silver medals for Great Britain as Germany claimed gold. With both Alexandra and Lordy taking part in their first Euros she was not expected to become only the second British Pony rider ever to win an individual medal – a feat achieved in only their second season of international competition together. Daughter of Samantha and David Hellings, Alexandra has trained with International Grand Prix rider Sonia Baines at Dunston Park Equestrian Centre in Chesterfield for almost 7 years, beginning her career on a Shetland cross. She is the third person to make the Euros from the renowned competition and livery yard and now hopes to build on this Euro success with the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo a personal ambition.

Boxing Update! Not long now until the Sara Littlefield’s White Collar fight at Princes Sports Club on the 7th September.I have been following a strict training programme covering all the basic areas of boxing which has been hard work both physically as well as mentally, all levels having to be signed off by a licensed trainer and checked that everything has been covered properly. I will have a fitness test then a medical to see that I’m fit for fighting. On Friday 29th August I will find out who my opponent is at the final official weigh in at Princes Club. Its certainly been an experience just the training alone, I’ve loved every minute of it so far and will probably never get the opportunity to do anything like it again. Please help me raise as much as I can for Ashgate Hospice, so far I have raised around £200 but would like to see that double if possible. I will be on the prowl around the village in the next couple of weeks with my sponsor form with me so please dig around in your pockets for any loose change of fat wads of cash! Thank you very much to all the kind, generous people who have already sponsored me. If you would like to donate online please visit; https://www.justgiving.com/Sara-Littlefield1/

Thank you from Under the Edge MagazineThe Committee of Under the Edge Magazine held their AGM on 3rd July 2014. We run the magazine on a non-profit basis, which continues to run smoothly each year but could not be done so without the small army of volunteers in and around the villages of Great and Little Longstone, Monsal Head, Wardlow, Hassop and Rowland. We would like to thank everyone who plays a part in the magazine; the people who send in regular articles, especially Roger Cox who has been doing so monthly since 1999 when the first issue came out! Thank you to the advertisers, the collectors and the distributors. Special thanks to Julia Morgans who collects the magazine from the printers and stands in as ‘Main Distributor’ when Liz and Jim McDonald are away. Thank you to Pam Smith at Haven Cottage, who writes the ‘Notes from St. Giles’, and allows her address to be used for correspondence to the magazine. We would also like to thank our Chairman for many years, Peter Askew, who has recently resigned from his post, for all the years’ as Chair of UTE and send him our best wishes. Police NewsThe Mobile Police Station, which has been serving the area for a number of years, has now been kitted out with CCTV cameras and monitoring equipment.Supported by the local district and borough community safety partnerships, the van can be used by officers as needed in various locations with the aim of helping to prevent, reduce and help detect crime and anti-social behaviour.Community Safety Inspector Russell Dakin said:"The new equipment will enable officers to provide a high visibility presence within communities, and can be deployed to places where it is needed to help us target incidents of nuisance or crime. It can also be used during high profile events such as football matches. The van will also be on hand to support the work of our Safer Neighbourhood policing teams, during proactive police operations, for critical or major incidents and also to support policing of the night time economy."The equipment includes a telescopic rear CCTV camera, and three smaller cameras covering the sides and front of the vehicle. The Mobile Police Station and CCTV is now fully operational, and is already being used throughout the area.

British Transport Police warn of dangers to those trespassing Derbyshire’s railway networkNetwork Rail and British Transport Po l i c e ( B T P ) a re wo r k i n g i n partnership to improve the safety and security of the railway and to detect and prosecute any offenders.21 July 2014Trespass and vandalism of railway infrastructure cause millions of pounds worth of damage and puts lives in danger. Network Rail and British Transport Police are actively targeting those who commit this type of crime.Trespass may not sound like a serious offence but, it can be a major safety hazard. Vandals putting obstructions in front of trains, hanging items from bridges and throwing stones can lead to serious injury or death and can even derail trains.Trespass also leads to other offences; it is difficult to commit vandalism or to obstruct trains without trespassing. Route crime costs the rail industry £150million per year and causes 486 days worth of delays. It costs passengers too - If people are seen on railway lines, trains are held, electricity current is switched off and staff diverted from their duties. There are 25,000 volts running through the overhead cable on the railway network, you only need to be 3 metres away from the cable for the electricity to arc and cause serious injury or death, so keep umbrellas and other objects well away from the cables.Trains can travel up to 125 mph it is vital you cross with caution. Never cross the railway tracks where it is not authorised to do so. Before crossing a foot crossing always look both ways repeatedly and listen carefully before crossing sometimes you can’t hear a train coming before you see it. When crossing the foot crossing walk across the designated path and don’t stray off

onto the tracks.Obstruction and trespassing on the Railway are criminal offences which can result in a person being arrested and fined up to £1000 for trespassing and imprisonment for obstruction of the railway. There are 3 safe ways to cross the railway: • Use an over bridge or subway tunnel to cross running lines • Use dedicated foot crossings appropriately• Use level crossings.A newsletter highlighting the dangers of trespass and vandalism are available to download in the useful documents section. If you wish to report any information to us, please call us on Freephone 0800 40 50 40 or text the information to 61016.Helping people with learning

a personal alarm, not walking home alone after dark and not letting strangers into your home.We fund the Hate Crime and Keeping Safe project which is supported by MacIntyre, Derbyshire Police and Derbyshire Learning Disability Partnership Board. It aims to stop the bullying and abuse of people with learning disabilities and help them to stay safe.Representatives from the local branches of the Learning Disability Partnership Board, who have learning disabilities themselves, have found the fact sheets helpful and reassuring.Liam Bearder, North East Derbyshire and Bolsover representative said:The leaflets give me information that will help me to keep myself safe when I am at home or when I am out.”D a v i d W h i l t o n , C h e s t e r f i e l d representative said: “They are good leaflets. They have good pictures and are easy to understand.”S t e p h e n W i b b e r l e y, E r e wa s h representative said: I am frightened to travel by bus after something bad happened to me. It’s good to have these leaflets.”Councillor Rob Davison, our Deputy Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care said: It’s important that people with learning disabilities feel safe and secure. The Keeping Safe project is an important part of supporting people to lead independent lives, feel

confident about getting out and about and dealing with others.”Councillor Paul Smith, our Deputy Cabinet Member for Health and Communities said:These new fact sheets are focussed on the issues we know that people with learning disabilities can be faced with. They will give them, their families and carers peace of mind, knowing that if they do need help, they know what to do and where to go where people can help them.”An important part of the Hate Crime and Keeping Safe project is the Safe Places scheme and the Keep Safe card.Safe Places are public places where people with learning disabilities can go if they feel scared, threatened or are in trouble while out and about. The scheme is well-established in Derbyshire libraries and is now being extended to include other venues.People with learning disabilities are encouraged to carry a Keep Safe card. The card holds their emergency contact details. They can give the Keep Safe card to a Safe Places staff member and ask for help or for a family member or friend to be contacted. For more information on the Keeping Safe fact sheets and the project, visit:www.derbyshire.gov.uk /keepingsafe For more information about Safe Places go to:www.derbyshire.gov.uk/safeplaceRecovered Property AppealPolice are appealing for the owners of a number of items of silverware recovered at a property in Chaddesden to come forward. Snooker ClubI recently signed up for snooker at the Village Hall and was surprised to learn how small a number of people take advantage of the table.I’m no expert at snooker but for a few hours I enjoyed knocking the balls around managing to avoid the pockets on most occasions and ending up with some very low scores, which said nothing about the skill of my opponent as I ended up winning three games to one!If anyone is interested in playing, maybe you weren’t aware of the facility or perhaps you’re a bit out of practice, have no fear there are no professional players involved. If any other players would like to start a club, playing friendly matches, maybe with some kind of league table, it would really make the game more interesting. Here We Are Again…Is it really five months since Sally B’s opened as the Longstone Village Shop? The weeks have certainly whizzed by, during which time we’ve acquainted ourselves with lots of villagers, made friends with many and shared a laugh with most of you too! I’m sure you’ll all be pleased to know that things, businesswise, are going in the right direction. Of course, we still hope for your continued support, especially as the end of the summer season draws ever nearer and the tourists, hikers, bikers, walkers and cyclists find the warmth of their own fireside preferable to the lanes and footpaths surrounding our beautiful villages. As many of you will have noticed, there has been a number of changes within the shop; a larger freezer has been installed and we’ve doubled the size of our chill cabinet to enable us to offer much more in the way of fresh and frozen foods, as well as ice cream. We have also started to sell a few newspapers at weekends. This is mainly to fulfil the many requests we’ve had from holiday makers and the many temporary residents in the area.On the subject of change; during breaks in her university studies, we are pleased to have recruited local girl, Sian, to run the shop on Sundays. We’re sure you will all make her feel really welcome as she becomes part of our little community. There is also news of our support for the Caister Volunteer Lifeboat Service; Thanks to your generous donations of a few coins here and there, the collection box is rapidly getting towards the full mark and will soon need replacing, so in order to ‘kill two birds with one stone’, Keith has decided to take a few days off in order to visit Caister on Sea, where he will not only continue his research into his families history and connection to the Caister Lifeboat, but also have the collection box replaced while he’s at the station.Keith & Sally at Sally B’s

Farming Notes September 2014

When I was a little boy I would see in my comic books how the future might be – driverless cars and small handheld gadgets with pictures of one another and such like. Well, the future seems to be here on Britain’s farms. Tractors and combines steer themselves by satell ite navigation with pinpoint accuracy - the driver just sitting and letting it drive itself is commonplace on the larger arable farms. Quad bikes, smart phones and computer recording are some of the modern technology that farmers are using.Having milked cows through the milking parlour for fifty years, I never thought that cows could be milked by robots. Now, nearly 50% of new dairy installations are being fitted with robot milkers – a number of them are here in the Peak District. One robot milker can milk around sixty cows. Set up close to the cubicle house, the cows soon get used to going into the machine. Each cow has a transponder on a neck collar so that it is recognised

by the computer system. Once she is in, the gate shuts behind her and she is given some corn to eat. Then the mechanical arm comes through the cow’s back legs and cleans the udder. The teat cups are directed to the cow’s teats by a laser beam. When the milk flow slows, the teat cups are removed and the arm retreats to be washed. Another arm sprays the udder with a teat spray; the front gate opens and the cow walks out.We went to see two robot milkers at Marsden’s farm at Bamford and there were always cows happily waiting to come in. They can be milked up to three or four times a day but if a cow goes in to the milker too often, the machine lets her straight out again. If the cow’s milk has a high temperature, the milk is diverted from the tank and the farmer is alerted on his smart phone that she could have a health problem. The robots were working well when we called to see them. It seemed strange that the cows were being milked with no one around. I’m sure that this is the future but at a cost of £100,000, it won’t be at Church Lane Farm and it just wouldn’t work with the cows having to walk up and down the lane to the fields!! Roger Cox

My Friends,Many of you will have heard that I am retiring at the end of September. My last Sunday will be on the 28th when I shall be at Stoney (9.00am), Longstone (11.00am and 6.30pm) and Wardlow (3.00pm) and there will be a final Sung Eucharist at Curbar Church on the 29th at 7.00pm.When I was ordained back in 1980 there were still many clergy who had been made rector or vicar of their parish before the rules had changed which required you to retire at 70 or before. Under the old legislation you could stay in your parish until you were incapable of taking services. The story is told of one vicar who, when he reached the age of 100, received a letter from the bishop suggesting that he might wish to retire. He replied saying ‘Your predecessor but four made no mention of my appointment being temporary.’ He carried on for another few years. I however have decided to take early retirement. In one sense I do so reluctantly. Since coming here in April 2008 I have enjoyed myself immensely and am happy in my parish work, but I am getting older and am conscious that as retirement comes closer so does the temptation to free wheel for the final few years. As the opportunity to take early retirement has, unexpectedly, arisen I have decide to jump while parish life is still moving forward. There is a strong tradition in the Church that when you leave a parish you move completely away from the area and do not take part in any activities where once you were incumbent. Clare and I are moving back down to Devon near to a village called Manaton on the Eastern edge of Dartmoor. Our house is less than a mile from Hound Tor – a well-known climbing venue! My first letter to UTE described being

surrounded by cardboard boxes as we unloaded possessions. Cardboard boxes are present again as we try to decide what we need to take and what we must get rid of: we are moving into a much smaller house. Letting go of things you do not need is a difficult but beneficial experience, although when a priest retires he or she still carries their ordination with them. You do not cease to be a priest when you stop being the vicar of a parish. So even though I am taking early retirement I may well find myself involved in taking services: we shall see. On a personal note we would like to thank everyone for making our time here so enjoyable and enriching. Our best wishes to you all.

Yours sincerely,Fr. Christopher and Clare Benson

Notes from St. GilesAlthough the weather on July 19th started off rather wet, and the Garden Party at the Vicarage venue was re-arranged in the Village Hall, nevertheless, the rain stopped in time for the blessing of the wells of Little Longstone and Great Longstone. Congratulations to all who took part in assembling them all, they were all spectacular. Queen Isabelle was duly crowned by last years queen, Zoe Bennett. Our Queen and her attendants, Catriona, Agnes and Kia all looked lovely and we were all invited to follow them to the Village Hall to enjoy the refreshments, stalls and most enjoyable live entertainment. A good time was had by all.We start September by celebrating with a Eucharist for St. Giles day on Monday 1st at 7:00pm in church and a get-together in the Vicarage afterwards. The Church of the Good Shepherd at Wardlow have a very busy month . They are having their ‘Gingerbread Festival’ from Saturday 30th August to Monday 1st September during which their delicious refreshments will be available from 11:30am to 4:30pm. More importantly, as notified elesewhere in UTE, on Sunday 7th September at 7:00pm there will be a very special commemoration of the Centenary of the beginning of World War I, in the Church of The Good Shepherd. A warm welcome to everyone who can join us, as we

remember all those who suffered or were lost in that conflict. On Friday 26th September the Harvest Supper will be held at Wardlow Village Hall and on Sunday 28th Harvest Festival will be celebrated at 3:00pm in the church.During the 11:00am service in St. Giles on Sunday 28th, Father Christopher will be celebrating his final eucharist in Longstone and on Monday 29th at All Saints Church in Curbar at 7:00pm there will be a final farewell and party afterwards. May Father Christopher and Clare find great fulfillment in their new life.I hope everyone is ready for the new school year and all those waiting anxiously for G.C.S.E and ‘A’ Level results have managed to gain the passes they required. Best wishes to everyone starting the challenge of University life, and to all those now concentrating on their ‘A’ levels. May all pupils starting their new challenge in High School settle in well and all our young ones starting in reception, or full time, are ready for their new adventure of learning.Advance notice: Please note that Harvest festival in St. Giles will be on Sunday 12th October.Have your jumpers at the ready now the weather is cooling down.Take care everyone.Pam smith
