Message from the Principal

2013-14 will go down as a memorable year for Trinity Academy – the year we saw completion of our new, state of the art Sixth Form Centre. You cannot help but notice it as you come into the Academy on a morning, changing colour as you move: it certainly is eye catching and it has now been nominated for a prestigious design award. If it wins it will serve to prove what we already know, that it really is a great building for our students and only what they deserve.

We are very proud of the successes of our sixth formers who have done so well again this year. The achievements of our Year 12 students in their AS examinations have put them in the top 20% nationally. We are delighted for them but it is not hard to see why they have done so well – they work incredibly hard and are highly motivated in their desire to succeed.

Many of our Year 13 students also did exceptionally well with many securing places at some of the UK’s top universities. Head Girl Megan Gee obtained A* in A Level Biology, A in A Level Chemistry and B in A Level Physics, which has meant she has been able to secure a place at the University of Bristol to read Veterinary Medicine. Laura Day is currently reading Chemistry at the University of Bristol

after gaining A*, A*, A in her A Levels. Trinity Academy seems the place to be for creating the next generation of scientists as Danny West is currently reading Chemistry with Mathematics at University College London and Jonathon Thirkle Chemical Engineering at the University of Sheffield.

These students are among many who, through securing excellent A Level grades here at Trinity Academy Sixth Form, have gone on to realise their dreams of studying at university and being on the path to their chosen career.

At GCSE many students gained enviable grades with some securing all A or A* grades. This is a wonderful achievement and of course allows them to move onto the A level courses of their choice.

Trinity Academy 2013

This is also the year when Mr Brew retired, moving back to his beloved Liverpool. He was our founding principal and we renamed our lecture theatre in his honour, as a reminder of how much Trinity owes to his leadership and vision over the past decade.

This year we also saw a record number of students signing up for and taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. It is fantastic to see so many who are taking up the challenges, donning their walking boots and aiming to achieve either bronze or gold awards. Maintaining the outdoors theme, we also saw an amazing number of staff and students take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge this year, the students showing phenomenal stamina, courage and determination as

they ventured up the three mighty peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. I am staggered at the time of the group which completed this quickest – a lung-bursting, thigh-straining, knee-bending achievement of under 9 hours for the entire 23 mile course!

On the stage we had the unforgettable Return to the Forbidden Planet, Treasure Island and The Exam, each in their different ways taking us on a journey into the unknown.

We are delighted to see our students achieving wonderful things outside of the Academy as well: Jarvis Parkinson represented England in swimming and Jacob Porter in Speed Skating, Jacob also vying for an Olympic place; Courtney Green is a finalist in “Miss Dance of Great Britain” in June

2015; Sophie Hawkins competes on the World stage in karate and kickboxing; Louis Jones gained a place as an apprentice with Doncaster Rovers.

There is so much going on at Trinity every day, so many great features, that we cannot report on all of the achievements of all students. However, the Year Book gives us an opportunity to recognise their skills, talents and achievements. We have a terrific team of staff and an equally wonderful group of students with great support from home. This is a fabulous combination and I look forward to seeing what we can achieve in 2014-15.

Greetings from Emmanuel College

Dear friends

What do astronauts eat?

It’s not a joke, it’s a competition question - and five Emmanuel students had the answer. Our Year 8 girls have just won a national contest to design a nutritious meal for Britain’s first astronaut.

Their 'space lolly' - a frozen three course meal on a stick - will be prepared by Heston Blumenthal's chefs under the girls' direction, and eaten by Tim Peake when he finally gets into outer space. Let's hope he likes it; the prize includes a Skype with Major Peake in his rocket!

Other stellar Emmanuel students include Steven Jaremko - selected for the England Karate Squad, having reached second dan black belt

whilst still in Year 9 - and Katy Wilson, whose blog became the world's most visited Eurovision website after her journalistic visit to Europe's most hotly contested music event.

Meanwhile, in modern languages Daniel Thirlaway reached the national finals of the French spelling championships, while the German Department set up a third language exchange - with a school on the site of the infamous Berlin wall. In technology, thirty students represented Emmanuel at the national Big Bang Fair, taking home eight prizes between them, and over a hundred students joined forces to stage West Side Story, their combined drama, dance and music talents delighting a thousand people in a sell-out show.

Even more exciting have been the things we've done together - Pumas, Lions, Zambia, Tall

Ships, Olympics - life time memories forged in friendly competition and collaborative adventure. And now teachers at Emmanuel, King's, Trinity and Bede have joined forces to achieve Teaching School status. We have a mandate to raise standards of education across the North of England.

What should we say in response to these things? I love these words, found in the 107th psalm in the Holy Bible: "... give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind." We owe everything to Him.

It's been a wonderful year. Thanks for sharing it with us. Here's to another one!

Greetings from The King’s Academy

Beyond academic results, students of The King’s in all year groups have been working hard to raise funds for our three supported charities – The Butterwick Hospice, Great North Air Ambulance and Uhuru Ministries, an orphanage and school in Kenya. Altogether, with the combined efforts of individuals, small groups, tutor groups, whole year groups and the whole school, we have raised a sum total of £6,300.00 over the course of the year, which is to be divided equally between the three charities. Furthermore, an additional £5,000.00 has been raised by the students to convert one of the school minibuses for disabled access. Nothing makes me more proud than seeing students considering those in need and then resolving to improve their situation through the raising of much needed funds.

As a family of schools, we

have enjoyed each another’s company this year at the ESF Olympics, the Business Game, the Sixth Form PTE Conference, the ESF Lions rugby tour and the trip to Zambia. On each occasion, friendly competition and banter has been enjoyed, along with the forming and sustaining of meaningful friendships. We always appreciate and never take for granted the privilege of being in a Foundation of four schools, where we share our experiences, share the joys and hardships of life, and learn from one another as we all seek to provide the very best education we can for the students in our care.

I was so pleased to be able to watch this year’s productions of Return to the Forbidden Planet at Trinity Academy and West Side Story at Emmanuel College, both of which were greatly enjoyed. Along with Singin’ In The Rain at The

King’s Academy and Phantom of the Opera at Bede Academy this has been a stellar year, demonstrating that the performing arts are clearly fine and well in the schools of ESF.

It is also a privilege for the four ESF schools to share in one common Christian ethos, with core values founded on the life of Jesus Christ. In a world so troubled and so in need of answers, many look to Christ for his message of salvation and hope.

Whether it be the academic results, cross-Foundation events, the school productions or our shared Christian ethos, I hope you are as pleased and as proud as I am of being part of our family of schools. I trust you will enjoy your Yearbook!

With my very best wishes,

Chris Drew, Principal

Dear Students and Parents,

It is great to write to you from your sister school, The King’s Academy in Middlesbrough, and to be part of your latest Yearbook.

We began the 2013-14 academic year with fantastic examination results at GCSE and A-Level. A number of King’s records were broken, including GCSE 5+ A*-C including English and mathematics at 59%, and 5+ A*-C at 89%. At A-Level also, 60% of all grades were A*, A or B – a result that is a match for any of the best Sixth Form providers in the North East region.

Bede Academy

We were therefore delighted to have Lord Mackay of Clashfern as our honoured guest for the day. The son of a railway signalman, Lord Mackay recalled his childhood through the Second World War and the difficulties that were faced at that time. What should be remembered, however, is that Lord Mackay’s own determination to succeed culminated in him being the most senior law officer in Scotland and the longest serving Lord Chancellor in British Government. He encouraged all students to seize every opportunity to fulfil their potential and also to be grateful for the many good things they had been given. This message was reinforced on summer visits to Zambia and South Africa where Sixth Form students saw firsthand how little some children and families have, yet they make the best of what is offered to them, never forgetting to help each other.

Another much admired person

closer to home was Lieutenant R B Stannard from Blyth who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his courage and tenacity during the Second World War. Lord Stannard is remembered each year at Bede Academy when the trophy, named after him, is presented to a student for their grit and determination in sport and who contributes significantly and selflessly to their team. This year, Scott Reynolds (Year 8) received the award at the Academy’s Annual Sports Awards Dinner in recognition of his contribution to Rugby and other sports within the Academy.

If I were asked for a highlight from this year, I would struggle to choose just one as there have been so many – and very different – achievements by students. Many sporting successes by students at Bede North and Bede South, the biggest ever Academy production Phantom of the Opera, which received excellent reviews, and the Academy Choir

singing at the Royal Albert Hall all come to mind. Also, of great importance in the Academy calendar, are the events that bring students from all four ESF schools together throughout the year: ESF Olympics, Tall Ships and Zambia to name but a few. We have seen enduring friendships forged through these events and we look forward to welcoming you to Bede Academy as we host the next ESF Olympics.

Presentation Day gave us an opportunity to reflect on some of the highlights of the Academy’s first five years as we reached the end of our first year where we are truly an all-age 3-18 Academy. No doubt your yearbook will remind you of some of the great achievements and lasting memories of 2013/2014, and I look forward to reading about our sister schools and celebrating with you another successful year.

Gwyneth Evans, Principal

Dear Friends

At this year’s Presentation Day, as the country commemorated the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War, we took time to reflect on what we had learned from the past, whilst looking forward to the future as we celebrated the personal achievement and endeavour of our students.

Rugby Lions are pictured here poised to pounce on the opposition as four schools unite to form an elite tour squad. Students from Trinity Academy were hoping to be the pride of their school after joining forces with fellow Emmanuel Schools Foundation pupils to create a 24-man Lions squad for their annual Scottish rugby tour.

The ESF team, made up from the best under-16s players selected from The King’s Academy, Middlesbrough, Bede Academy, Blyth, Emmanuel College, Gateshead and Trinity Academy, were to compete against Longridge Towers, Berwick, The High School of Glasgow and North Berwick High School during their week-long tour.

Trinity learning support assistant John Chapman, who was appointed as an assistant coach for the tour, said: “Rugby is a very important part of our sporting curriculum at Trinity. Every year group has a team and it is also a main part of our inter-house sports. Competition to get into the ESF Lions team in Year 11 is very fierce. Not only are students competing against players in their own academy, but also from three other schools, so it is a great privilege for us to have seven players awarded places on the tour.”

The Trinity lads were joined by the remaining squad members at Emmanuel College, Gateshead, where they were presented with a full ESF Lions kit before setting off on the

tour.

As well as playing the three games the team members were also to be given a tour of Murrayfield Stadium before watching Edinburgh Rugby Club take on Benetton Treviso; they enjoyed too a walking tour of Edinburgh, an evening of bowling and a chance to scale the heights at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena.

Student Jack Cuttell, 16, who plays hooker for Doncaster Rugby Club, added: “It feels really good to be selected for the ESF Lions team. I’m really looking forward to the experience of getting to know everyone and playing well to hopefully bring home three victories.”

Lions roar into action - students from Trinity Academy prepare to set off on the Emmanuel Schools Foundation ninth annual rugby tour, (L-R) Jack Cuttell (11McArthur), Kieran Wood (11Baxter), Jordan Linley (11Murphy), Michael Kulawik (11Shaw), Alec Hanson (11McArthur), Gregory Edgely (11Kendell), and Jared Roach (11Shaw)

Trinity Academy, Thorne, unites with Emmanuel Schools Foundation students from The King’s Academy, Middlesbrough, Bede Academy, Blyth, and Emmanuel College, Gateshead, to form the elite Lions rugby squad.

A AND AS LEVEL RESULTS TRINITY ACADEMY

23

Over 79% of the Sixth Form’s Year 13 students were guaranteed a place at university, with many going on to study at Russell Group Universities such as the University of York, Imperial College London and Bristol University, these places secured due to their excellent A Level performances.

Students celebrated a 95% pass rate and 39% of overall grades were grades A*-B. This represents the highest in Trinity Academy Sixth Form history and demonstrates the commitment of the teaching staff to push and develop the young people

to achieve their personal best. Notably, there are seven A Level subjects that have been graded as outstanding in terms of value added according to ALPS (A Level Points Score). These are Applied Business Studies, Applied ICT, Art, Drama, Economics, English Literature and Applied Health and Social Care.

A Level English Language and Literature (Combined) has been given the highest grading by ALPS, putting the teaching and learning of this subject at Trinity Academy in the top 5% nationally. Trinity Academy Sixth Form is going from strength

to strength with the A Level Applied subjects also achieving a 100% pass rate and 50% of those students achieving grades A*-B.

Not only did the Year 13 students celebrate success but also there were some fantastic results at AS Level. The students performed well at the top end with 30% of students achieving grade A – B. For the first time since the Sixth Form opened at Trinity Academy the provider value added quality and breadth score awarded by ALPS reached a grade 2 putting Trinity Academy Sixth Form as outstanding and amongst the

Investing in the Future

With the newest facilities opening in the Doncaster area and a fantastic set of A Level and AS Level results, Trinity Academy Sixth Form students are reaping the rewards of continued investment in teaching and learning.

top 10% nationally at AS Level.

Mrs Hirst, Director of Sixth Form said, “Congratulations to all of our students. It is fantastic to see so many brilliant results. These are just rewards for the hard work and dedication of both staff and students”.

During the latest Ofsted Inspection it was noted that the academy “has a comprehensive picture about the progress students are making in different subjects” in the sixth form. “Use is made of this information to plan extra help for individual

students.“

Expectations have raised the expectations of students with respect to their independent study time and students are taking more responsibility for this.

September 2014 saw the opening of the new £1 million Sixth Form Centre at Trinity Academy. This investment is a demonstration of the commitment and drive that the academy has on continuing improvement. The building houses two new study rooms

fully equipped with PCs and internet access, a UCAS Library, three new teaching spaces and also a social space where students will be able to discuss their courses, lessons and future with their peers.

Mr Page, Principal, said, ‘We are very proud of what the students have managed to achieve. We look forward to building on these good foundations in the months and years to come as we invest further in high quality provision for the young people of Thorne and Moorends and our wider community.’

Resurrection

The (future) Head Boy and Head Girl spoke clearly and confidently, presenting the show with flair and making an uncomfortably hot environment better with their vibrant, humorous performance. Furthermore, those students who performed in the show, especially sixth formers this year, did so with excellence in both timing and execution. The Sergeant Major sketch was particularly hilarious, students being well supported by Mr Mapletoft, who stole the show with his outlandish character.

It was also nice to see a sneaky preview of the Treasure Island production, which hopefully managed to persuade people to attend. The fearless students in the Long John Silver scene showed no nerves as they spoke their lines with confidence and portrayed their characters with conviction.

It was so refreshing to see students who have worked hard all year be rewarded for their excellence by a boost in their confidence. It was particularly encouraging for me to see some

of my own students collecting prizes (and that the prizes were books!).

The ceremony ended with a touching speech from Mr Brew as he expressed his passion for the school and each one of its students. There was utter silence as he gave his speech, a sign of true respect.

After a gruellingly difficult year, it was a very pleasant way to end.

Miss Hill

It is a tradition that we ask someone in their first year of teaching at Trinity to give their response to Prize Giving. This year, Miss Hill has been kind enough to give her time to this: Resurrection is about living again and this year’s Prize Giving was something of a response to the Ofsted inspection!

THE ACADEMIC YEAR CHARITIES SUMMARY 2013 - 2014

26

As you give...There was a cross-country; there was a fun run; there was five-a-side football; there was singing; there was dancing; there was a readathon; there was sale of Christmas cards (and a Christmas bottle); there was not just one but there were two Three Peaks challenges. What didn’t our students do for our three charities?

We are pleased to say that the three charities we support constantly at Trinity each collected substantial amounts from us this year: £1114 went to Bluebell Wood, our local charity, £1416 to Cancer Research, our national charity and £1000 to Cambodia Action, our international charity. Added to those we can mention the Poppy Appeal; the Marie Curie Foundation’s daffodil appeal; the untold value of gifts in shoeboxes at Christmas; giving to various other charities via members of staff running marathons or students doing a sponsored swim, silence, walk or other activity.

So, as always, well done, Trinity students, parents and carers, members of staff and supporters.

A Picture of You

Cameras were turned on the whole school on October 3rd when nearly 1,500 staff and students came together for a memorable photograph; it was only the second time in its history that everyone at Trinity Academy, Thorne, had been photographed together.

It took three hours to set up staging for the event and for all 1,240 students and 200 teachers and support staff to get into position before four frames could be taken by Tempest Photography. Sixth formers were the first to climb up to their places in the centre of the photograph, followed by the other year groups and staff, with the youngest children in year 7 at the front to complete the picture.

Mr Brew said: “It’s an exciting occasion to have everyone together, although it is no easy feat. We had to postpone the picture last term because of high winds on the original date we had planned, so we were pleased that it could go ahead this second time around. The students behaved very well, especially those who had to wait in position the longest while everyone else gathered. We hope that when they get a copy they will treasure it in years to come and remember their academy days with fondness.”

For technophiles, the wide angle single picture was taken on Kodak film at shutter speed 1/60th of a second at F16 on a Japanese Toyo camera.

Under CoverTrinity Academy held its annual dance show on November 13th 2013. Under Cover was based on cover songs and included only Trinity Academy students. The team of very dedicated dancers rehearsed hard for seven weeks and the show was a great success with many students making their debut performance.

The evening saw a high standard of performance by students ranging from Year 7 through to Year 11, many even choreographing their own dances for the evening; the standard of this choreography was outstanding.

The whole evening was extremely enjoyable for all

involved. The students taking part were professional and enthusiastic from the very first audition. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of them: clearly, it would not have been possible without them.

The comedy, by Andy Hamilton of Drop the Dead Donkey fame, focuses on three pupils - played by Robin Coe (12Ramsden), Bailey Wilson (10Longley) and Caitlin Houlbrook (10Walton) - who are about to sit an exam, and their varied family backgrounds.

Head of Performing Arts at the academy and show director Mrs Cutler said: "It's a very funny play but still true to life and carrying serious messages. The three main characters, who are from different backgrounds and have different abilities, are thrown together waiting outside

the exam room. What follows is a snapshot of their family lives and the different pressures they are under."

“It’s very much an ensemble piece,” added Mrs Cutler. “Everyone is on stage for almost the entire production so it gives all the cast a good chance to perform.”

The show was primarily a sixth form production with a cast of thirteen plus the academy's real principal Mr Brew, who even had a speaking part as the menacing voice of the exam.

An academy production was something of a busman’s holiday for students who brought the pressure of school exams to life on stage. Students from Trinity Academy performed The Exam in a two-night run on Wednesday and Thursday, November 6th and 7th.

The Visitorby Jay Green, 8Potts

Spindly, silhouetted trees reached up to the sky like a hand reaching up from a grave. I was bombarded with emotion, immobilised with fear. All intelligence and logic lost. A wolf howled in the distance. Suddenly, an ominous fog drifted down and through the trees making my emotions escalate so that I was becoming paralysed with terror. The fog tasted muggy and made it hard to breathe. Engulfed, my sight started to blur, yet I could still make out the stationary water. My reflection looked at me and I began to imagine my dead corpse being devoured by maggots. The pale moon was drained of colour but cast a dim light into the maze of undergrowth. My stomach emptied itself but the repulsive smell infuriated my nostrils. The howl again... A light showed itself in the distance. Civilisation! Or was it?

The air around the cavernous crater was lifeless. The mighty, mechanical monstrosity behind the trench was very intimidating yet strangely comical. Its tentacles oozed with a gelatinous liquid which illuminated the gloomy surroundings. Shockingly, its eyes were burning embers like a furnace in the ceaseless darkness. Shielding the symmetrical savage was an ashen fog. What was this apparition? Bravely, I decided

I should talk to this colossal creature.

“What do you want? What are you doing here? Who are you?”“Very well, I will answer all your questions: I am Baeron, the chief commander’s messenger, and I want all the water this planet can give me”, replied the monster.“You can’t have the water; we n-need it”, I shuttered back.“Very well” the gargantuan giant said and then flew away. That was when I saw it...

A massive, monumental mothership soared over Earth, orbiting and threatening scarily. Dauntingly, a glossy firearm was re-directing itself at me. Emotions writhed within me. Terror. Fear. Despair. I could not restrain them. All of a sudden, green rays of destruction hammered down on the Pacific Ocean. The dead river I had seen earlier was just a trench now... How could I stop this? Hurrying, I rang 999, but with difficulty because my hands were shaking uncontrollably. I told them at the other end what had happened. The damaging leviathan paradoxically floated like a feather towards me and threw me into the air like a ball, up and up and up. Luckily, a helicopter caught me and took me down. However, luck left me then because a forcefield surrounded the army base. Yet a man managed to get a sword to me beforehand. The alien was behind me so I gathered all the courage I could

muster and turned around.

Picking up the blade, I faced the grotesque, gargantuan goliath. The wind wrapped around me like a shield as if knowing I needed protection. The monster’s oversized hands slapped me: I was losing at first but I managed to sever its arm, causing it to repeat the howl I heard in the woods earlier. Retreating, the alien got one last blow before running for its life. Time to roll the dice. I threw my sword and everything stopped. My heart beat vigorously. Exhilarated. Ecstatic. I had done it.

As if it were rehearsed, the mothership slowly withdrew. I might be able to see my family again; I might be able to get back to normal. Everything would be alright. Jumping up and down, I was elated. I walked home, the sun setting behind me and I felt like a hero. Turning around to watch that blazing ball of fire set, I saw it: that halo of vivid, verdant green slowly, almost mockingly, cascade over the fathomless ocean. This war was not finished yet...

SUMMER TERM 2014 YORKSHIRE SCULPTURE PARK 2014

See me, feel me

During Arts Week this year, Key Stage 3 students visited the unique Yorkshire Sculpture Park. This international centre for modern and contemporary art is experienced and enjoyed by thousands of visitors every year.

Students explored open-air displays by some of the world’s finest artists, enjoying fascinating exhibitions throughout four stunning galleries; they were inspired by the natural beauty of an historic estate and they responded with great enthusiasm.

The first large-scale exhibition in Europe by highly acclaimed American artist Ursula von Rydingsvard was enjoyed by all. The exhibition, the artist’s most extensive to date, illustrates the full scope of von Rydingsvard’s diverse practice, including more than forty works of drawing and sculpture from the last two decades, presented in YSP’s purpose-built Underground Gallery and in the open air.

South Wales-based illustrator Tom Frost takes inspiration from YSP’s historic landscape and varied wildlife to create limited edition screen prints, ceramics and home ware.

Alternative Landscape

Components (2006) by the American artist Dennis Oppenheim (1938-2011), is an installation that investigates relationships between natural and artificial environments. Comprising fluorescent trees, fake hedgerows and seemingly genetically modified flowers, the foliage has branches laden with a range of curious domestic artifacts including baths, toilets, sinks, dog kennels, dustbins, plastic chairs and parts of fences.

This trip used art and landscape to build young people's intellectual knowledge, skills and aspirations and so much more.

A BRIG ABROARD SUMMER TERM 2014

Tall Ships Challenge

They had been sailing for nearly eight days since leaving Liverpool with the Tall Ships Youth Trust and a crew of 61, including students and staff from the four schools in the Emmanuel Schools Foundation. ESF commissions a voyage every year to offer Year 9 students a once in a lifetime experience designed to challenge, build character, teach new skills and as a reward for students who have put in extra effort.

Trinity student Cara Hopkins said: "Some people were scared of being away from home for a long time but being in the middle of nowhere meant we all helped each through it. We all got along really well and became a strong team. People

conquered some of their fears and made lots of new friends."

Frankie Middleton added: "I'm really going to miss everyone. It's been a big adventure that we've shared together."

Rebecca Harvey said: "It's been the best experience of my life so far, something new and completely different and I don't think I'll get the chance to do something like this again."

The fourth Trinity crew member Izzy Maltby explained how they had seen whales and dolphins on the voyage. Divided into 'watches', which involved the students working shifts on the ship, some even saw the Northern Lights.

The Trinity students were accompanied by French teacher Miss Surridge, who said: "It has been an amazing experience for the students and this group will help us promote the opportunity in the academy so more can come next year. The students have learned all sorts of new skills and done things they never thought they were capable of. Climbing the rigging, for instance."

En route from Liverpool the crew covered 758 nautical miles, stopping off at Tobermory and sailing through the Scottish Islands before heading south along the east coast of Scotland.

A spectacular sea voyage has whetted the appetite of young adventurers for life aboard ship. Four students from Trinity Academy sailed back into the port of Blyth, in Northumberland, in full voice, high up in the rigging of the tall ship Stavros E Nicarchos.

Shipmates: Rebecca Harvey (9Spence), Frankie Middleton (9Spence), Isabel Maltby (9Kendrick) and Cara Hopkins (9Spence), from Trinity Acdemy, aboard the tall ship Stavros E Niarchos.

A Bigger Splash

Tuesday the 10th of June saw an animated Trinity Academy descend upon a sunbathed Walesby Activity Centre. The palpable excitement of students was largely unperturbed by some unwanted guests occupying the tents. Mr Liddle to the rescue with some expert pest control and, with Mr Chapman’s reassuring optimism of the weather forecast, we set off to the first set of activities.

The Year 7 Residential

Students set about the challenges whole heartedly, encouraging each other and showing great determination to complete each of the activities. Later that evening everyone enjoyed singing and dancing around the campfire.

The next morning saw an energized Trinity awake at 5:30, champing at the bit to get stuck in to more activities. Students once again did the Academy proud. Kurtis Burnett (7Robson) was truly the protagonist of the day, dismissing the wobble pole

in a transient 37 seconds. Later that evening, whilst settling down for dinner, a matured Shaniece Brittan (7Lloyd) used the power of peer pressure for good by encouraging others to eat enough to give them energy for the following day.

Day three saw an assembly of well rested Year 7s tackle zip wires, crate stacking and team building exercises. Regardless of the searing heat, Joshua Rafferty (7Oakes) kept a cool head in leading his group through the challenges. That

evening brought the camp disco, with Mr Chapman, in his own words, “rippin’ up the dance floor”.

The final day was spent canoeing, raft building and body boarding on the camp lake, resulting in a rather saturated congregation of Year 7s. However all were showered and dried before the arrival of the coaches home. A week the staff and students will long remember.

SUMMER TERM 2014 BASSENFELL MANOR, LAKE DISTRICT

The Great Outdoors:

We were met with a very warm welcome from the Bassenfell staff, who wasted no time in getting us into our groups and stuck into a raft (hah!) of water-based team-building activities. Many of Trinity’s core values began to come to the fore immediately as all of the members of each group worked together to achieve their goals. Over the next four days we would see many outstanding examples of humility, compassion, courage and the other values we hold dear.

After a fantastic meal (gobbled up furiously despite the Burger King visit!), we headed out to climb Binsey Hill, just as the sun

began to set. Glorious views!

Day two saw the start of the main outdoor activities. kayaking, archery, stackers, abseiling, den building and bush craft all providing an excellent sources of excitement. A newly established tree-climb was particularly challenging but quite a few made it to the dizzying heights of the top. Favourite by far was gorge scrambling which involved making our way down a river by sliding down streams and jumping off rocks.

After a long hard day outside you might expect that a hearty meal followed by bed would be appropriate. But no, this was

the chance for Trinity staff to take the lead with a host of games and activities, including chocolate games, water-balloon volleyball, a camp-fire and a talent show, before Miss Chappell would send everyone off to sleep with her now infamous bed-time stories.

Each morning Penny B delivered an engaging thought for the day on the topic of ‘Who do you think Jesus is?’ Was he just a good teacher, or a freedom fighter perhaps, or was he God’s Son sent to save the world?

On the last night we had prizes galore and Mr Benn’s fiery chilli chocolates provided suitable forfeits for anyone deemed

The excitement began after about five minutes on the coach with cries of ‘Sir! Are we stopping at McDonald’s?’ Happily, Burger King at Scotch Corner provided a suitable substitute. A couple of hours and Appelby horses later we arrived at Bassenfell Manor for four fun-filled days of outdoor activities.

SUMMER TERM 2014 SPORTS DAY 2014

At the Keepmoat Stadium the competition was as hot as the weather for Sports Day.

As ever the students performed at their optimum level in their pursuit of House points. Many students “took one for the team” in competing in events that were not their favourites or that they were not familiar with. This team spirit is what Sports Day is all about and is what makes it such a special occasion.

In the second race of the day Ewan Bennett (9Cole) showed the determination and courage that epitomises the event of hurdles. Leading the race, Ewan clipped a hurdle and fell badly. He jumped straight

to his feet to complete the race and miraculously win it. Looking a bit pale and sore he was taken to hospital where the verdict was that he had broken his hand, thus making his performance even more marvellous.

The Year 7 boys 1500m was held for the first time this year. Consequently, Bevan Robson (7Hughes)’s time of 5mins 54 seconds was a record, setting the benchmark for future years. Thomas Graves (7Claringbold) capped an excellent day in breaking the javelin record with a throw of 18.2m. In the Year 7 girls competition Alix Young (7Robson) was the star performer, finishing first in the javelin, second in the long jump and third in the 200m.

Ellie Rowley (7Claringbold) was the only record breaker in Year 7 with a time of 32.59s in the 200m.

Ryan Pentland (8Singleton) had a superb day in the Year 8 boys competition, managing to break records in the 800m and the long jump. Joining Ryan as a record breaker was Jenson Harper (8Potts) who smashed the shot putt record, adding over a metre to the previous best distance. Daniel Cairns (8Deering) gained first place in both the 100m and 200m, completing a fine day with second place in the Long Jump. Megan Williamson (8Towers) added the Year 8 javelin record to the Year 7 record that she set last year. Amy Barker (8Singleton) also set a new

record in the discus.

Jordan Courtney (9Piroli) continued to be the man to beat in Year 9: despite only recently recovering from injury he again performed superbly on the day, winning the 100m, 200m and long jump. Ellie Aldsworth (9Cole), Frankie Middleton (9Spence), Holly Dennis (9Stephenson) and Holly Lyall (9Mosley) all showed what talented athletes they are in the Year 9 girls competition. Holly Dennis took victory in both the long jump and the high jump.

The competition in Year 10 is always fierce as it contains some of Trinity’s finest athletes. Records tumbled. Jordan Mason (10Clarke) completed the sprint double and in the process broke

the 200m record. Luke Pike (10Bush) continued his record breaking tradition, setting a new record in the 1500m and as a result now holding the record for this event in Years 8, 9 and 10. This capped a fine year for Luke, who represented South Yorkshire in the English Schools Cross Country Championships and also qualified to represent Doncaster in the South Yorkshire Athletics Championships.

In the girls competition Yasmin Mosby (10Beaman) smashed the 800m record by over 30 seconds; she is now a double record holder in this event. Added to this she set a new best in the javelin. One of the races of the day witnessed Ellie Bailey (10Kennedy) and Elly McMurdo (10Longley) renew rivalries in

the 100m; as ever there was a only fraction between the two and it is great to see them pushing each other to bigger and better performances each year.

The loudest cheer and possibly the best performance of the day came in the penultimate race of the day when the Kings girls smashed the Year 10 4 x100m relay record. The previous record stood at 60.79s, but thanks to slick changeovers and natural speed the girls set the new record at 54.04s.

As ever the behaviour and attitude of all students was impeccable and it was another superb Sports Day.

Poets new house Manager Mr Stones brought a different approach to their team and it looked like youth might overcome experience in the House Manager role! The competition has been fierce at times but always with the spirit of camaraderie and good sportsmanship. This year’s win means the Shepherds have retained the House Cup a massive seven times out of nine, an achievement that may never be repeated by any other house, and I am so proud to have been given the privilege to be part of this amazing journey since Trinity Academy opened in

September 2005. There have been some outstanding performances not only on the sporting field but in events such as the Photography Competition, Trinity’s Got Talent and the Short Story Competition. Shepherds House was truly brilliant! None of this would have been possible without our fantastic tutor team: they make the difference. They are constantly bombarded with emails from me looking for volunteers, and within minutes my inbox is full. It makes my role so easy.

It was a sad moment saying

goodbye to this year’s House Captains Nick Allen (13Cutler) and Carla Kendell (13Cutler) who have been brilliant, leading us to victory this year and making it possible for our new House Captains Jamie Quean (12Porter) and Emily Hodgson (12Porter) to lift the cup at Prize Giving. Jamie and Emily I know will lead the Shepherds challenge next year with the confidence and enthusiasm they have displayed throughout this year.

What an incredible year we’ve had. The amount of talent in Kings House never ceases to amaze me. Badminton was a Kings win again and so was Trinity’s Got Talent. Dance Mats was our game too. Fantastic dance steps that led us to win!

Sports Day was tremendous, as ever. We just missed winning by a few points from the Shepherds. What a team though. I couldn’t have asked for more effort. There were lots of records broken by Yasmin Mosby (10Beaman), Amy Barker (8Singleton), Ryan Pentland

(8Singleton) and Jenson Harper (8Potts).

Sian Grierson-Randall (13Armstrong) and Matthew Robinson (13Ryan) have been a great help, rallying the troops and competing in events wherever they can. Tia Merrell (12Ramsden) and Luke Cockburn (12Derry) have the pleasure of carrying on the great work they have done in the past year. Good luck to the new House Captains!

It’s unfortunate that we didn’t win the House Cup again. But

there’s always next year. Never give up!

This is my last year as House Manager for Kings House. I’ve loved the role and am so glad I’ve been a part of so many students’ lives and given them the opportunity to excel in areas that some might not have normally taken part in.

Best wishes and good luck for next year!

Unfortunately this did not happen. However, there were moments along the way that had them worried…I think. People do say that winning isn’t everything; I have actually enjoyed playing the role of ‘plucky underdog’ and I wouldn’t swap this group of students for any from the other two houses. Furthermore, my House Captains this year have been fantastic. Connor Swift (13Boughey) and Charlotte Davey (13Boughey) along with Elliot Redmile (12Hall) and Charley Thornton (12Nalty) have given me all the support that I

ever asked for so I would like to thank them greatly. Three main highlights for me his year have been:

• The Cross Country, where Bevan Robson (7Hughes)gave us a glimpse of the talent he possesses

• James Bull (10Winkley), Morgan Wardle (10Kirsopp) and Ben Wilding (10Kirsopp) performing an Oasis song in Trinity’s Got Talent

• House Cooking when Luke McAllister (8Chappell) and Phillip Green (8Benn) produced some fantastic

cookies (and we actually won an event)

As I move on, continuing to work in the academy next year but in a different capacity, I shall definitely be looking out for Poets’ results in the forthcoming years, and let us hope that we can become much more than plucky underdogs from here on in. In the words of Hamish Maclauchlan in Year 11, “ We are all Poets, aren’t we?”

Year 7/8 Cricket Year 7 Football

It has been great to see the boys develop both their level of skill and love of the game this season. This has been emphasised by a good number from the team playing cricket outside of school for Fishlake Cricket Club.

Results have not matched the endeavour that the boys have displayed. However with each extra game the batting, bowling and fielding skills have improved and this will benefit the team in future seasons. David Moores, 7Lloyd, has had an excellent season with both bat and ball and has proven to be an excellent all round cricketer.

Well done to all the boys who represent Trinity so well at cricket.

Despite a slow start, the determination of the boys was shown through their hard work in training and the games that were played, especially at home. In particular, extremely pleasing is how the boys have stuck together and developed as a well knitted team.

A definite highlight of the season was the home victory against Hall Cross where Trinity were behind twice but came back to win 5-4. This was done with five different scorers so it shows the talent that this year group has.

I would like to thank the Year 7s for all their hard work and hope that they continue this next year.

The 2013-14 season was a successful one with Trinity finishing the year as runners up in the league. An excellent return of 4 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss from their 6 league fixtures saw the lads pipped to the post by a strong Hall Cross team. It was particularly pleasing to see large numbers of Y8 students forever attend Monday night practice and contribute to intense competition for places.

The season was an impressive one for the lads, with the goal well-tended by the ever present Mason Andrews, and notable performances in defence from the two ‘Mr Consistents’ Jack McCallum 8Hadwin and Cameron McKenna 8McAthuir. Another standout performer over the season who deserves a mention is Captain Dylan Jones 8Towers (Kelman) for his leadership and squad organisation for matches.

Managers Player of the Year: Jack McCallum

Mr Stuart

A talented bunch of individuals, the Year 9 players are also able to transfer these qualities into effective teamwork. So the season got off to a flying start with not only all members in fine form but also all areas of play well covered.

However, erratic attendance meant that for the second successive year, Trinity narrowly missied out on silverware, again through goal difference alone!

The focus for next season is discipline, both on and, more importantly, off the field. How do these young men want to be remembered as a football team?

The season saw a massive improvement on previous years with a strong team ethic behind what was a pleasing season. There is huge competition for places amongst the Year 10 lads with large numbers regularly attending training and a squad of twenty to choose from on match-days.

In past years the lads have suffered heavy defeats to local rivals, but this year the defeats have been by the odd goal which clearly shows the improvements made. The stand out result was the

4-3 victory against a strong Danum side, a match made memorable by the world class saves from keeper William Mason 10Beaman.

If the current group sticks together next year, playing with the same positive attitude, the lads can look forward to another pleasing season

It was a pleasure to look after the 1st XI football team this year. They were a great bunch of lads, displaying excellent team spirit throughout the year.

We had a very pleasing season, of which the highlight was reaching the semi-final of the Doncaster Schools Cup. After convincing victories against Hayfield and Danum we came unstuck against a strong Ridgewood team in the semis.

To the lads who have now left Trinity I wish you well with your future footballing careers and I look forward to working with the rest of the team again next year.

The boys had an excellent first season of Rugby at Trinity. Despire many of the boys having had limited previous experience of the game they progressed well. This is because of their commitment to training which has been excellent. I am delighted that many of the lads are now playing rugby for the newly formed Thornensians team. This will only make us stronger in future years.

The boys finished with a record of five victories and five losses this year. Hopefully we can build on this next season.

I also need to thank both Mr Stones and Mr Chapman for their help in running this team throughout the year.

Although results would not seem to support this, the boys improved their performance level dramatically this season. They were helped by the addition of some new strong running players, Jamie Brint (8Singleton), Aiden Coy (8Chappell) and Dylan Jones (8Towers) adding some pace and power to the team.

The highlight of the season was the boys’ performance against Wickersley where we

managed to beat a team who had not lost all season, showing the potential of this team. With continued effort and commitment many of the narrow losses will turn into victories in the future.

I would like to thank Mr C Potts for his help in managing this team throughout the season.

The boys ended the season with a record of 4 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses. This is a good return on their continued enthusiasm for the game of rugby.

There is excellent camaraderie between this group of boys: they stick together through thick and thin. Daniel Wilcox continued to be talisman, putting in exceptional performances week in and week out as captain. Paddy Trimingham (9Hall), Matthew

Venables (9Cooper) and Daniel Urwin (9Mosely) developed their game considerably this season. Jordan Bull (9Cole) and Brad Gutteridge (9Hanson) added the creativity.

The junior squad consisted of Jack Spruce (8Deering), Thomas Graves (Captain, 7Claringbold), Thomas Stafford (8Benn) and John Harvey (8Scott). The boys relatively new to the sport were full of enthusiasm for the upcoming season. The commitment to training was second to none which allowed the squad to develop a considerable amount through the season. The team completed in the AEGON Schools Championship, Doncaster Schools Knock-out and The Road to Wimbledon with limited success, however the competitions provided a steep learning curve for the boys’ competitive performance. Playing up a year meant that at times they were overpowered, however this never dampened their spirits and we look forward to a level playing field next season.

The stalwarts of Francis Sykes (Captain, 9Cole), Joseph Gleaves (9Mosley), Bartosz Swedziol (9Mosley) and Daniel Urwin (9Mosley) enjoyed success in the 2013-14 season. This is in part due to their commitment and determination to the early years of their fledgling tennis careers. The boys enjoyed success in the Doncaster Schools Doubles Championship, progressing to the finals night at Wheatley Tennis Club. They also narrowly missed

out on progressing to the national stages of the AEGON Championship on points. Success was also narrowly missed in the early stages of The Road to Wimbledon. All of this plus the fact that all four boys have played up a year promises for a positive 2014-15 season.

Year 7 hockey last season started off slow but by the end of the season there was a good squad of students that came every week and developed their hockey skills. During the Doncaster Schools tournament the girls lost their first match and they drew the remaining two matches, which meant that whilst we did not win the tournament we performed well and were certainly not last! It is great to see the same squad of students out again this season plus more keen hockey players.

Year 8 had a small selection of dedicated players that came every week without fail, but we did struggle to get a consistent team, which made it extremely difficult to win matches and also organise matches against other teams. This year the girls represented Trinity in Pumas with Paige Taylor (10Garbutt), Jade Bate (10Bush), Emily Garnham (10Garbutt), Katie Stead (10Winkley), Yasmin Collins (10Winkley) and Lauren Breen (10Kennedy) all playing their role and bringing a strong team to the schools in Edinburgh.

Year 8 Netball

Attendance at Year 7 practices has been hugely positive with a large number of players (consistently over twenty all year) showing an interest in representing the school. The Year 7 girls have had a mixed season of results but should be really proud of their performances and they will continue to improve into the next season.

Mrs Fitzgerald

As with Year 7, a large number of players have attended each practice so the atmosphere in Year 8 has been hugely positive. Many members of last year’s Year 7 squad have continued to train and represent the team which is very pleasing and lots of new faces too have attended training. The team members are showing a great deal of potential for the future, there being a large number of talented key players within the squad. The girls have had a great season: long may this continue.

Year 9 Netball

64

The 2013/2014 Netball season continued to run very smoothly with practices every week and, as ever, an excellent weekly turnout by the Year 9 team.

The majority of fixtures were cancelled unfortunately, mostly because of the weather. It is very difficult to comment on teams’ performances because of such a thin results list - however notably Ellie Aldsworth (9Cole), Francesca Middleton (9Armstrong) and Cara Hopkins (9Armstrong) continue to perform well consistently. Jodi Parkinson (9Cole), Bethany

Marsh (9Cole), Lauren Oxspring (9Cooper) and Rebecca Harvey (9Armstrong) improved their game play and tactical awareness massively since Year 8, and Ruth Wheatley (9Cole) is a welcome addition to the squad.

We look forward to next season and hope we are blessed with fine weather! We have a tremendous amount of talent in the team so we hope to utilise this in the very near future.

Senior Netball

The 2013/2014 netball season ran very smoothly with practices every week, weather permitting; numbers to practices were in the 50s consistently which is excellent. Latterly the numbers dropped but this was due to commitments to studies by many in the older years, which is understandable.

Quite a few fixtures were cancelled unfortunately due to either the weather or schools not being able to supply full squads; these were rearranged where possible for later on in the season. Nevertheless the teams all did very well; success brings success and we still have students attending training sessions who have never played in the past which is tremendous.

Year 10 NetballThey are a very talented bunch and this has allowed a number of players to represent the Year 11 team, those who have done so having done an amazing job; they all represented Year 11 in the Doncaster Schools Tournament and played brilliantly. Although unfortunately they did not place, this prepared them well for the tournament in their own age group, the Doncaster Schools Tournament for Year 10, in which they came fifth out of fifteen schools, and this was a real achievement. Keep up the hard work!!

Year 11 / VI Form Netball

The Year 11 and VI Form students have continued to show commitment to training and attending fixtures, demonstrating excellent dedication. They are a very talented bunch and have very good attendance at training and fixtures this season so far.

Having played numerous games this season they have had some great wins and some minor defeats to some tough opposition. Most of the games were very close and a great deal of skill and determination were in evidence. They achieved joint second place in the Doncaster Schools Tournament which was a great result. They also beat Hall Cross 3-1 in their last fixture, a fabulous victory: well done!

It was a steady year for the Year 7 Rounders team: we started off with only a few eager players but as the season continued the numbers increased. There was definitely an improvement from the first game of the season to the last. The girls learned the rules and finished by applying tactics to their game.

The weekly training sessions and matches allowed all players to implement their knowledge and skills from their PE lessons into practice. The margin between the score lines decreased with

every match, the girls managing to win their first match of the season when it really counted at the Doncaster Schools tournament, thus gaining third place. Well done, girls!

The team members started to settle into positions and learn to work together, improving their skills further, so I have every confidence of future success for the team.

It was a steady year for the Year 8 Rounders team, the girls having not had the same commitment to training as they had the previous year, so that at times it was difficult to field a full team. We do however have a small number of dedicated Year 8 students who train and play for every match. The girls are still finding their way with Rounders and a full team would aid this process further.

Unfortunately, the girls were knocked out in the first round of the Doncaster Schools tournament. However, a positive to be taken from

that tournament was that with each game the performance of Trinity improved and the last game was the best game the girls had played all season.

Although the girls won no matches this season there are the dedicated few and I hope they continue their commitment throughout their time at Trinity.

It has been a steady year for the Year 9 Rounders team too: we have a very committed cohort of girls that play for all clubs and Rounders is no different! The girls played well throughout the season with a mixture of wins, draws and losses. During the Doncaster Schools tournament the girls were focused and determined to play well,

getting through the first stage of the competition but being narrowly defeated into the play-offs for 3rd and 4th. Well played, girls, and keep up the commitment to sport!

Year 10, 11 & VI Form Rounders

The 2013/2014 Rounders season for Years 10-13 was a huge success, continuing to run very smoothly with practices and fixtures every alternate week; numbers to practices have been in the 40s most weeks regardless of the weather, which is excellent.

Some of the teams do very well, success bringing success, and we are still having students who have never played in the past attending training sessions, which is tremendous. We seem now to be winning more and more matches which is extremely pleasing; this is having a positive impact on training and their attendance and willingness to train.

The senior squads this year had the most success - Sixth Form won the Doncaster Schools Competition for the second year running and the Year 10 team were placed third in the Doncaster Schools Tournaments for the second year running also. We wish all the squads success in the future tournaments and matches to come...

They have played numerous games this season, with some big wins and only minor defeats from some tough opposition, although most of the games were very close and showed a great deal of skill and determination. Year 11/VI Form Rounders

Doncaster Schools Tournament WINNERS! Second year running... Need I say more?

A lovely, talented group of young ladies who were dedicated to training even though they had exams and pressures of A-Levels. I will miss Tansy and Sian very much but I wish them both well for the future.

The terrific squad comprises some Year 11 and Year 10 students as well as sixth formers, and they are a pleasure to coach, demonstrating passion and an array of fielding and batting skills that will take them far. Well done on an excellent season; bring on next season!

2013-2014 season saw a rapid upturn in the number of girls participating in Tennis, which is absolutely fantastic and great credit to Mrs Rhodes. The senior squad consisted of Jodi Parkinson (9Cole), Francesca Middleton (9Armstrong), Kiera Essex (9Cooper), Phoebe Leech (9Backhouse), Ellie Aldsworth (9Cole), Paige Taylor (10Garbutt) and Kika-J Oliver (9Hanson). The junior squad included our most promising tennis player and winner of the Trinity Academy Junior Singles Knock-

out Competition, Megan Williamson (8Kelman). Frustratingly for Megan, due to her high rating she was unable to compete in the national and local competitions, however she did beat several of the away teams’ senior boys’ top seeds when fixtures took place. We look forward to another year of development in Girls’ Tennis at Trinity Academy.
