A GUIDE TO UNCW REGULAR ADMISSION DECISIONS

As the last applications have been submitted for our February 1 deadline, many students will begin receiving their decision letters. They may be unfamiliar with some of the decisions (apart from admit and deny). We know that students turn to you for explanations, and with that in mind, this guide will give you a better understanding of UNCW’s admission decisions. We ecourage you to have your students call our office directly if they have any questions about their decision that you are not comfortable explaining.

Admit FYSA (First-Year Spring Admit) - Admit FYSA is an acceptance to the university with a January rather than August start. Students admitted FYSA cannot change to the fall. The FYSA program is comprised of a select group of approximately 100 students we identify during the reading process (students cannot apply for this program). FYSA’s are enthusiastic about attending UNCW, exhibit leadership qualities, but some element of their application was not consistent with our averages.

Waitlist - Last year, UNCW waitlisted 300 applicants. The extent to which we go to our waitlist can vary sharply from year to year. Our waitlist is not ranked. The admissions committee will reevaluate every wait listed student’s credentials and make a decision based on academic ability as well as interest. Students admitted from the waitlist will best complement our freshman class.

Deny, Recommend Transfer - Students receiving this decision show a strong desire to attend UNCW (whether through selected major, connection to the university, or contact with the admissions office) but do not meet admission averages. Along with their deny letter, we provide specific information about how to begin the transfer process.

Defer (for one year) - This is not a decision made by the Office of Admissions but rather by the student. After being admitted into the university, a student can formally request to defer their acceptance for one year. Students often choose to do this if they are considering traveling, working, or volunteering for one year. They must first

GUIDANCE COUNSELOR WEBPORTAL - SEALEVELThe UNC Wilmington Office of Admission encourages you to use our counselor web portal,

Sealevel, designed to assist you and your school counseling office. The secure counselor portal can be accessed at https://sealevel.uncw.edu/counselorportal/ and allows you to monitor the application status

of students who have applied for admission to UNCW and determine what elements of their application have or have not been received by our office. The Counselor Portal will also allow you to find out if students have completed their application for admission and will keep you up-to-date with deadlines and important dates. Students’ decisions are not displayed on the Counselor Portal during the admissions cycle.

TEAL TICKETThe Teal Ticket is a comprehensive guide for admitted UNCW students. With our offer of admission, we include the step-by-step guide which will direct students all the way up to move in day. It takes all of the guesswork out of the process of going to college. We understand that students have many questions after being accepted so please encourage those planning to attend UNCW to consult their Teal Ticket.

UNCW ADMISSION WEBSITEWWW.UNCW.EDU/ADMISSIONS

As always, the UNCW Admission website is the best resource for students and parents to discover all that there is to know about the UNCW freshman admission process. Admission standardized test and gpa averages, answers to frequently asked questions, scholarship/financial aid information, along with links to other student services, can be found through the site. Students can also access their Sealevel accout from the site. Sealevel will keep students up-to-date with the status of their application as well as add their name to our mailing list. It truly is the most comprehensive site for students to stay in touch with the Office of Admission through the application process.

SPRING PROGRAMS AT UNCW

We know that many high school juniors are beginning to ask you about the college process, and UNCW would like to help you assist them through this journey. We would like to take the opportunity to introduce them to our campus and the competitive admissions process during our Just Juniors Visitation Days. These visitation days will feature sessions that focus on the admission process, financial aid, University College and will include a campus tour. Each day will also focus on one of our three professional schools: Cameron School of Business (02/19), School of Nursing (03/19), and Watson School of Education (4/30). Only current high school juniors can sign up for these visit days and they can do so through the admissions website. These programs go beyond the normal campus tour and are a great way to be introduced to UNCW.

Accepted students are invited to attend the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Spring visit day, Soaring to Greatness, on Saturday, March 27, 2010. Students will discover the academic and involvement opportunities that await them as a member of the Seahawk community. Visiting the campus is always the best way for students to get a true feel for a university and its programs. We hope that you will encourage all of your admitted students to attend this informative day!
