TWO CAMPUSES

CHAPEL HILL

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy occupies four buildings on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. Beard Hall, Kerr Hall the Genetic Medicine Building, which we share with the UNC School of Medicine, and Marsico Hall.

In 2014 Marisco Hall, one of the largest buildings built on the UNC Chapel Hill campus, became home to basic and translational research across several disciplines, providing a state-of-the-art environment that allow us to provide our students with a top-quality education.

Our Chapel Hill campus is close to the Research Triangle Park business region, and several large health systems. It offers a rich blend of culture, entertainment, recreation, fine dining, and some of the best college basketball action in the country.

ASHEVILLE

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Asheville campus is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains at the University of North Carolina at Asheville.

Our Rural Health certificate program is only offered on our Asheville campus.

Our Asheville campus offers smaller class sizes on a small campus that combines state of the art technology with innovative practice and academic excellence in order to improve the health of our region, our state and our world.

Our Asheville campus is close to Mission Hospital, one of the top ranked hospitals in the U.S. by U.S. News & World Report. It is also offers a vibrant arts, music and restaurant scene, through close proximity to bohemian downtown Asheville.

We offer our Pharm.D. program at our Chapel Hill campus and in Western N.C. at our Asheville campus. The curriculum and the requirements for admission are the same for both campuses. We use innovative videoconferencing technology to deliver real-time, interactive classroom instruction from faculty in Asheville and Chapel Hill so that all our students receive the same educational experience. Both campuses have access to dedicated faculty to support their unique educational needs and experiences.

R U R A L H E A L T HCERTIFICATE

“The program has taught me how to think beyond drug therapy, consider a patient holistically and factor in non-medicine related social determinants affecting their health and how to help patients overcome them. I have learned not only skills for communicating across cultural boundaries, but have also become more self-aware and able to evaluate myself for possible cultural biases.”

- Casey Hamon, Class of 2019

RURAL PHARMACY HEALTH CERTIFICATE

The demand for pharmacists is often higher in rural communities where access to medical services may be limited by geography, distance and economic challenges. Our Rural Pharmacy Health Certificate within our Doctor of Pharmacy program prepares student pharmacists for collabora-tive, interprofessional practices that serve the health care needs of peo-ple living in rural communities.

Courses offered in the Rural Pharmacy Health Certificate program include:

• Population Health Management• Culturally Responsive Health Care• Introduction to Rural Populations• Health Disparities• Impact of Social Determinants of Health in Overall Patient Outcomes• Leadership and Community Engagement

Students may apply to become a Rural Pharmacy Health Scholar during the spring semester of their first year.

THE ASHEVILLE SUMMITEach year, students at our Asheville Summit coordinate a large conference including industry leaders that has faculty, student and professional attendees from throughout the southeastern United States.

Our students research and identify timely and relevant topics in pharmacy practice, and are involved in all aspects of the conference planning and execution.

Past conferences, have discussed provider status, innovation within pharmacy practice, and the importance of interprofessional care.

PATIENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAMSAsheville students have the opportunity to work with rural populations who may live in remote locations, and who may have problems with transportation and affordability of their medications.

Our students go beyond traditional pharmacy practice to work with other health care practitioners on solutions to these problems.

Our work on population health includes initiatives that educate people on the proper use of medications to increase health benefits and limit medication use errors that can result in health problems and additional health care costs.

PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONSAll of our students have support for their participation as members and leaders in state and national organizations geared toward the advancement of our profession and its practitioners. Our students often receive awards for their innovation, research, scholarship and efforts in patient care from presitgious organizations such as:

• American Society of Health-System Pharmacists• Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy• American Public Health Association• American Academy of Colleges of Pharmacy• Student National Pharmaceutical Association

HISTORIC BILTMORE ESTATE

The beloved family home of the Vanderbilts, established in 1895 and still overseen by descendants to this day, is the same gasp-inducing statement piece that it’s always been. Rolling fields and majestic, fairytale-worthy structures still dot the campus.

The estate, which is known as the largest home in America, has concerts and exhibitions throughout the year and features a vineyard and winery where visitors can explore the 8,000-acre backyard via kayak, Segway, horseback, bike, Land Rover, and more.

Biltmore Village, located across from the entrance to Biltmore Estate, is home to

more than 40 shops, and 10 cafes and restaurants.

Most businesses are housed in historic cottages and

buildings along tree-lined streets with brick sidewalks.

PISGAH NATIONAL FOREST

Comprised of over 500,000 acres, the Pisgah is primarily a hardwood forest with whitewater rivers, waterfalls and hundreds of miles of trails.

This national forest is home of the first tract of land purchased under the Weeks Act of 1911 which led to the creation of the national forests in the eastern United States.

WESTERN N.C.DOWNTOWN ASHEVILLE

Asheville has a lot to offer to a lot of different people. Many people visit to experience its natural wonders, while others can’t get enough of its holistic spas and alternative healing options.

There are also people who insist the Asheville area is the craft brewing capital of N.C.

Add in the dining landscape, arts and music scene, history and hand-crafted wares, and you’ll find that Asheville has a lot of personality and charm.

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Asheville campus provides an immersive learning environment for training the next generation of pharmacy scholars. Many of our Asheville students specialize in population health management and finding innovative solutions to addressing health disparities and social causes of health problems.

F R O M R U R A L T O

GLOBAL

Our Asheville students gain valuable skills in cultural competency, and providing pharmacy solutions to populations that have limited access to health systems, difficulty with understanding complicated treatment plans, limitations in access to and affordability of health care providers, and challenges with following and maintaining medication plans.

Our graduates are positioned to be leaders in pharmacy practice and policy aimed at solving global/local patient care problems and health crises.
