SER IOUSLY CR EATIVE?

Name the one thing that the world’s leading scientists, economists, teachers and entrepreneurs have in common: They are all creative thinkers.

At the University of North Carolina at Asheville, creative expression will become an inherent part of your academic experience—from the discussions you will have in class with professors to the discoveries you make with other students.

Whether you are studying psychology, engineering, environmental science or jazz composition, your curriculum will emphasize real-world learning and research experience rather than long-winded lecture classes. We want our students to become lifelong problem solvers and critical thinkers who are experts in their majors and ready for challenging careers.

That’s what learning is all about at a Seriously Creative university.

The liberal arts tradition is alive and well at UNC Asheville, where students are encouraged to question, to discuss...” —THE PRINCETON REVIEW

today’s liberal arts

In our New Media lab, a group of students are

creating a photorealistic, 3D-animated version of

Abraham Lincoln. Their project, led by Assistant

Professor Chris Oakley, is a convergence of art,

technology and extensive historical research.

It’s just one example of the Liberal Arts at work.

4

Find the art in science and the science in art.

The Liberal Arts offer a time-tested blueprint to get the most out of

your college education. It’s called interdisciplinary learning.

We encourage you to explore many different subjects outside your

chosen major to understand how they interact. For example: How

science influences art, how economics drives sustainability or how

history is rediscovered through modern technology.

A UNC Asheville education challenges you to look at life from many perspectives—to question, to discuss, to see connections between a

multitude of subjects. Our professors are ready to help you find your

calling—even if you’re not sure what that might be right now.

A better way to learn.

Your education won’t get lost

in a 300-person lecture hall.

UNC Asheville professors pride

themselves on being available for

their students.

Jason Wingert: Every student

in the health and wellness

promotion major knows Assistant

Professor Jason Wingert very

well. He’s one of the department’s

many professors who regularly

recruit students to work on real-

world research projects.

Lei Han: Associate Professor

Lei Han helps her new media

students cross the technical

divide with one-on-one and

Q&A sessions in every class.

Like so many professors at

UNC Asheville, she prefers

leading discussions rather than

giving lectures.

Dwight Mullen: Discussions

that start in Political Science

Professor Dwight Mullen’s

classes extend into the local

Asheville community through lab

courses and field placements,

and he brings music, film

and fiction to his diversified

approach to political science.

All the ingredients for a superior college experience. . .strong academics, dedicated professors and an administration that continues to push for excellence.” — FISKE GUIDE TO COLLEGES

Small classes. Accomplished professors. Hands-on learning. You won’t find another university with a campus culture quite like UNC Asheville. The university creates a purposefully personal learning environment where professors invite students to learn and discover alongside them. And walking around our close-knit campus, students, staff and professors frequently stop to chat or even grab a cup of coffee together.

4 Your professors will know you by name.

4 Our classrooms feature more discussions than lectures.

4 All classes are taught by faculty, not teaching assistants.

4 Students are often chosen to serve as research assistants.

Personalize your education through Undergraduate Research.

It’s the kind of academic freedom normally reserved for master’s-level

students at other universities.

Some recent undergraduate research projects:

4 Predicting the effects of greenhouse gases

4 Uncovering spy organizations that fought racism in the 1900s

4 Finding what causes cancer to spread

4 Designing affordable, nutritious dietary plans for poor communities

4 Creating a series of paintings on human psychology and social interaction

4 Determining the economic value of indigenous mountain trout

Coming to Asheville is only part of the experience, and students

choose to study abroad through exchange programs with

destinations in more than 50 countries and faculty-led trips to

China, India, Greece, Turkey, England, Spain, Italy and Ghana,

where service-learning connects students to the local culture.

UNC Asheville students can opt to earn

class credits by spending semesters

abroad at international universities.

You’ll also have a chance to earn

academic honors as a Community

Engaged Scholar, working on social

issues in the Asheville area.

42 UNC Asheville students have been awarded Fulbright Scholarships to study or teach in countries from the United Kingdom to South Korea.

Kyle Cavagnini ’14: Biochemistry and philosophy double-major Kyle gained

hands-on experience in the lab with GlaxoSmithKline Professor of Molecular

and Chemical Biology Ted Meigs. Kyle will continue to employ the techniques

and knowledge he acquired during undergraduate research at UNC Asheville

through a Fulbright Fellowship in Norway. His mission is to test hypotheses

related to neuropathic disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease.

UNC Asheville alumni turn real-world learning into real-life achievement.

Joe Phillips ’09: This atmospheric sciences

graduate has taken his degree to new

extremes—to the deepest reaches of Antarctica,

where winter temperatures average around

minus 70 degrees. As station chief for a

National Oceanic and Atmospheric

Administration research post, he maintains a

suite of instruments that sample the

atmosphere, and he witnesses some of the

atmospheric phenomena once discussed in his

classes more than 8,600 miles away.

Tanya Harris ’06: When she arrived at UNC

Asheville, Tanya knew that she wanted to be a

lawyer, but she had no idea what kind of law to

pursue. Then she took a course with Psychology

Professor Pam Laughon, where she helped

successfully reverse a death penalty conviction.

Today, as an assistant public defender in

Mecklenburg County, Tanya represents clients

who can’t afford their own attorneys.

Katie Johnson ’13: A close collaboration

between Katie and Associate Professor of Art

History Leisa Rundquist culminated in a major

exhibition at the Asheville Art Museum,

featuring works by “outsider” and self-taught

artists. Katie developed insider knowledge of

the curatorial process, an experience she plans

to tout on graduate school applications, along

with an inaugural scholarship award from the

American Folk Art Society.

Wiley Cash ’00: He majored in literature, but

it was his history classes and the magic of the

mountains of nearby Madison County that

inspired Wiley Cash’s first novel, A Land More

Kind Than Home. The award-winning book

debuted on the New York Times Bestseller list

and promptly won praise by reviewers in USA

Today, Vanity Fair and O Magazine.

Private college experience at a public university price.

Value is what you get out of an education, not how

much it costs. With small classes, individual attention

and rigorous academic experiences, UNC Asheville offers

a nationally ranked curriculum for a fraction of the cost

of comparable private universities. When our students

graduate, they average lower debt levels than the

majority of North Carolina public university attendees.

See how UNC Asheville compares nationally:

4 Forbes: Ranked 20th among the nation’s “Best Value Colleges.”

4 The Princeton Review: Named to the list of 75 Best Value public colleges in the U.S.

4 Kiplinger’s Personal Finance: One of the nation’s best values in public colleges, with the 6th lowest total cost of attending for in-state students, and the 8th lowest average debt among graduates.

4 U.S. News and World Report: 7th in the nation among public liberal arts colleges, and is the only North Carolina institution listed among national liberal arts colleges whose students graduate with the least amount of debt.

Financial Aid: More than 68 percent of UNC Asheville

students receive financial assistance. More than 73 percent

of students’ financial needs are met through scholarships,

grants, loans and other benefits.

The Laurels Scholarships: UNC Asheville’s merit-based

scholarships range from partial assistance up to full tuition

and fees. Applications are required by November 15, 2014.

Departmental Scholarships: Almost every major at UNC

Asheville offers its own set of scholarships. Requirements

able to apply.
