Let Norma start your love affair withopera. Even for a novice this gorgeous piece of theater has much to offer:

magical sets and costumes adorn heart-wrenching drama. The beautiful singing anda live orchestra are the icing on the cake.

San Francisco Opera has brought in sopranoCatherine Naglestad to play Norma, a Druidpriestess in the time of Caesar. She has a secretlove affair with Pollione, a Roman and hersworn enemy, and bears two children by him.This doomed alliance leads to Norma’s down-fall as Pollione betrays her with a temple virgin.

It doesn’t take an opera aficionado toappreciate Norma’s bel canto (beautiful sing-ing) style. Naglestad’s exquisite voice conveysall the pain, anger and shattered dignity thatleads to her death.

It’s easy to find opera intimidating: threehours of singing in Italian, with no explosions,no nudity or profanity to keep our TV cultureinterested. But opera can be just as gripping,emotional and visually exciting. And Norma is agreat place to start: a darkly beautiful fairytalemixed with soap opera story lines. Don’t worrythat the story will go over your head. For thoseof us who don’t speak Italian, English supertitlesare projected around the stage, and a concisesynopsis is available in the program.

PPPermita que Norma lo inicie en su aven- tura amorosa con la ópera. Aún para una

persona novata, esta pieza teatral tienemucho que ofrecer: escenarios mágicos y unvestuario que adorna este desgarrador drama.El hermoso canto y la orquesta en vivo son lacereza del pastel.

La Ópera de San Francisco ha traído a lasoprano Catherine Naglestad para queinterprete a Norma, una sacerdotisa druida dela época de César. Ella tiene una aventuraamorosa con Pollione, romano y además unode sus peores enemigos, y tiene con él dos hijos.Esta alianza sin esperanza conduce a la caídade Norma, cuando Pollione la traiciona conuna virgen de un templo.

No necesita ser un aficionado de la óperapara apreciar el estilo bel canto (canto bello)de Norma. La exquisita voz de Naglestadexpresa todo el dolor, la ira y dignidadaplastada que conduce a Norma a la muerte.

Es fácil encontrar una opera que intimida:tres horas de canto en italiano, sin explosiones,desnudo o profanación para mantener intere-sada a nuestra cultura tan enlazada a la tele-visión. The Story Mickey Finch has raised his stepbrother, Tet,since the death of their parents when Tet was very young.They form a devoted team, earning their way in life asfiercely committed Hip Hop street performers, working forspare change. Meanwhile, Malloy has his own thing goingon, he is taking down the story of his neighborhood andwriting a play. When Finch’s former partner, Zac, returns totown, the two re-form as a new act, leaving Tet feelingrejected and at loose ends. Tet goes into a downward spiralof anger and violence leading the play to its gripping, heartwrenching finale.

Note: The positive messages contained in this “raparetta”make it a valuable experience for young people. There are,however, acts of violence and strong language in the show,so we recommend it for older teens and adults.

CECILIA BARTOLI SE PRESENTA EN ELSALÓN ZELLERBACH

En una noche de octubre en Berkeley nos sentimos muycomplacidos al asistir a un recital interpretado por unángel. Cecilia Bartola canta realmente como un ángel. Cantóun programa de música de principios del siglo XVIII deAntonio Caldera, Alessandro Scarlotti y de un jóven GeorgeHandel. Actualmente, mucha de esta música no esescuchada popularmente.

Durante dos horas y media, aria tras aria nos ofrecía tantaenergía, emoción y justo un canto bello y puro. Lascanciones lentas, como mis favoritas “Lascia la spina, coglila rosa” de Handel, tienen notas que sustentan el dolor congran belleza y tanto sentimiento.

Entonces sus piezas más vigorosas tuvieron ese arrebatode coloratura (notas extras con escalas altas y bajas) y elpoder de mantener a la audiencia extasiada. Bartola estuvoacompañada de la Orquesta “La Scintella” de la Ópera deZurich, tocando instrumentos del siglo XVIII.

CECILIA BARTOLI PERFORMS ATZELLERBACH HALL

On an evening in October in Berkeley we were treated toa recital by an angel. And Cecilia Bartoli does sing like anangel. She sang a program of early 18th century music byAntonio Caldera, Alessandro Scarlotti, and a young GeorgeHandel. Much of the music is not heard popularly today.

For 2-1/2 hours one aria after another offered us suchenergy, emotion and just plain beautiful singing. The slowsongs, like my favorite “Lascia la spina, cogli la rosa” byHandel, have achingly beautifully sustained notes and suchfeeling.

Then her more vigorous pieces had bursts of coloratura(extra notes up and down the scale) and power that keptthe audience in rapture. She was accompanied nicely bythe Orchestra La Scintella of the Zurich Opera playing 18thcentury instruments. — By Kathryn Laiks
