Back-‐2-‐School Supermileage Gets Off to Early Start in the Year by Connecting with Alumni at Woodward Dream Cruise
What began as a fundraiser to raise money for a soccer field for students has turned into one of the largest automotive events held over the course of a day in the world. The Woodward Dream Cruise is said to attract 1.5 million visitors and 40,000 classic cars from all over the world. Among them this year? Last year’s vehicle Son of Cypress.
MConnex, a University program whose goal is to keep Alumni engaged with Engineering students, approached various design teams with the opportunity to attend the Dream Cruise and connect with Alumni. MHybrid, Baja, and Formula SAE attended in addition to Supermileage.

New this year on Body Team? A division of leadership. This year Body is co-‐led by Diego Montano and Lucas Mata-‐ collectively known throughout the team as ‘Ducas’. Lucas hopes that sharing the responsibilities between leads will allow for greater productivity; “On body team, we will have weeks where there won't be too much to do, but then another week we'll have three or four projects or objectives to accomplish, and instead of having a concrete division of leadership, it will be a more fluid, divide and conquer method.” Currently featured on the To-‐Do List for the 2015-‐2016 vehicle, Acacia, is to make the top mold (see bottom mold in upper left), the canopies, the windows, and finally: to paint the car. Because of improvements to Son of Cypress’ body design, the Body team will not have to spend time repairing ribs that supported the sides of the vehicle. In Acacia’s design the ribs were eliminated allowing for more time to be dedicated to materials research so as to improve the design of the car.
Sponsor Highlight: Michigan Fiberglass With a new car and a new strategy this year (electric instead of gasoline), Supermileage also revamped the project timeline. This means having a car ready by the end of first semester. Michigan Fiberglass has played an integral role in helping us reach that goal-‐ our bottom mold is complete and ready for action. Not only does that help us with our timeline, but it also provides a point of interest for potential members as we enter recruitment season. Michigan Fiberglass is a fiberglass and composite materials supplier based in St. Clair Shores, MI. In addition to building our carbon fiber shell, they also answer technical questions we have related to the layup process and epoxies. The carbon-‐fiber shell is key to achieving a high mileage as it has an ideal strength to weight ratio. The fact that a high strength of material cannot be compromised was made clear after last year’s roll-‐over. Thanks to a sturdy body, our driver was unharmed. We have worked with Michigan Fiberglass for many years now and are looking
forward to many more!
