DESCRIPTION

I prepared a brief guideline for my children in preparation of us going for Umrah. Our trip was via road from Doha to Makkah, thus our experience may be different from some readers. But this is minor issue. The content is still relevant, Insya Allah. I hope you would find the content beneficial and may this little effort help our children to understand the Umrah rites and appreciate the acts of worshiping Allah. Please have us and the ummah in your dua.Jazakummulah hu khairan.

CHECKLISTS

You must try as much as you can to help your parents to prepare for this trip. They already have

a million things in mind. So do make a checklist of the things you want or need to bring

ITEMS NO. CHECKLISTS

Ihram 1

2 Thawb/ Abaya/ Headscarves 2

3 Jammies 4

4 Day shirt 3

5 Day pants 2

6 Undies 10

7 Stationeries

8 Shoe/ sandal 1/1

9 Swimming suit (in case)

10 Socks 5

11 Sweater 1

12 Toothbrush 1

13 Little scissors (for the ladies to cut their hair)

You can add more things that you find useful. But don’t bring the whole house with you.

To parents :

1. Mention the need to put effort and put TAWAKKAL to Allah. This is important because

we need to instill our children from young that firstly planning and preparation is

important. And more important is to give tawakkal to Allah. For He is the one who will

allow anything to happen. In His hands alone are the success or otherwise of our plan.

We pray that Allah will give the best to us.

2. Mention also the need to have ikhlas in whatever they need to do. Remind them that

niyah is only for Allah and our hope that He is please with us.

MEEQAT ميقات

In Arabic it means a station or a place.

But when we talk about the ibadah Umrah or Hajj, it means a special place where you will make

your niyah for umrah or hajj.

You see for umrah, you need to make your niyah at special place. And if you miss this, your

umrah is invalid.

Who gives this rule?

Rasullullah said it in his hadith (Book of Hajj)

Bukhari :: Book 2 :: Volume 26 :: Hadith 599

Narrated Ibn Abbas:

Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) made Dhul-Huiaifa as the Miqat for the people of Medina; Al-Juhfa for the

people of Sham; Qarn-al-Manazil for the people of Najd; and Yalamlam for the people of Yemen; and

these Mawaqit are for the people at those very places, and besides them for those who come thorough

those places with the intention of performing Hajj and 'Umra; and whoever is living within these

boundaries can assume lhram from the place he starts, and the people of Mecca can assume Ihram from

Mecca.

Since we will travel by car to Mekkah from Qatar, which is considered as coming from Najd1, we

will stop at this place called Qarn Un Manazil. Qarn un Manazil is after the town Taif. Qarn Un

Manazil is our meeqat. It is about 75km from Makkah.

1 Nejd or Najd (literally "highland", Arabic: نجد‎) is the central region of the Arabian Peninsula.

Page 5: Umrah Guidelines for the Young Ones

5

What should I do at the meeqat?

Now that you know what meeqat is, you must know what you are supposed to do there.

Do as the sunnahs

1. You will take the special bath there.

2. You will put on perfume (for boys only) before you put on the ihram garment

3. Cut your nails

4. If you have armpit hair, it is sunnah to remove them

5. If you have pubic hair it is sunnah to remove them also.

For girls, the ihram garment is the normal prayer clothes that you wear. Care must be taken that it should not be transparent nor tight. Nor should it be too short and not covering your chest. For boys, you will be wearing extra special. Ask ayah to help you with the ihram garment. Make sure it is fasten properly. We don’t want it to drop. *Blush* If it drops during the tawaf, or part of your awrah is shown, quickly have it covered. If you delay it, then that turn is consider invalid and you must repeat that round.

FORBIDDEN THINGS IN IHRAM

After you make niyah for umrah, you will be in a state of ihram. And being in a state of ihram

means, there are things that you cannot do. There are also things that you must complete

doing.

Before we discuss what we cannot do, we must know that once you say the niyah for umrah,

you must complete all the umrah rites. Pray to Allah that it is made easier for you.

The things that you cannot do while in ihram are

1. Cutting your hair

2. Cutting your nails

3. Apply perfume on body/ clothes

4. Killing or hunting

5. Marrying or asking someone to marry

6. Wearing a cap (for man)

7. Wearing seamed garment (for men) meaning no wearing socks nor spender

8. Covering face for woman

9. Wearing gloves for woman

10. Don’t pull out any plants, flowers or leaves (this apply all the time in Makkah)

Page 7: Umrah Guidelines for the Young Ones

7

STARTING THE UMRAH

Just like everything, we must make intention. So make the intention in your heart

بعوزة اللهن لبيك

Allah! Here I am responding to you in

performing the Umrah

Also add this condition to your niyah

حبستني حيث هحلي اللهن

O! Allah take the place where I take off my

ihram is where you restrain me2

The one who reads this and qadar Allah that he is prevented from completing the umrah –

there is no compensatory sacrifice due from him.

Most important of all be sincere, have IKHLAS, about going to umrah. You are doing this for

ALLAH. Not because your parents made you go. Since you don’t want to be alone at home, you

had to follow. Even initially this is how you feel, change it now. Do this for ALLAH alone. May

Allah shower you with Mercy and abundant of rewards both in the world and the afterlife. And

may He make our heart content.

2 Muslim :: Book 7 : Hadith 2756

A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) went (into the house of) Duba'a bint Zubair and said to her: Did you intend to perform Hajj? She said: By Allah, (I intend to do so) but I often remain ill, whereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said to her:

Perform Hajj but with con- dition, and say: O Allah, I shall be free from Ihram where you detain me. And she (Duba'a) was the wife of Miqdad.

TALBEEYAH

After saying the niyah, we start reciting the talbeeyah all the way until we reach Makkah. The

sunnah is to recite the talbeeyah loudly for the boys. For the girls we do it q u i e t l y.

لبيك، لك شزيك لا لبيك لبيك، اللهن لبيك

والولك، لك والنعوت الحود إى

لك شزيك لا Here am I, O Allah, Here am I. There is no associate

with You. Here am I. Surely all praise and graces

are Yours, and so is the dominion! There is no

associate with You3

3Saheeh Bukhari Volume 2, Book 26, Number 621: Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar :

The Talbiya of Allah's Apostle was : 'Labbaika Allahumma labbaik, Labbaika la sharika Laka labbaik, Inna-l-hamda wan-ni'mata Laka walmu

Lk, La sharika Laka' (I respond to Your call O Allah, I respond to Your call, and I am obedient to Your orders, You have no partner, I respond to

Your call All the praises and blessings are for You, All the sovereignty is for You, And You have no partners with you.

ON REACHING MAKKAH

Stop reciting the Talbeeyah upon reaching Makkah.

We will most likely put our bags at the hotel first. Take this opportunity to

1. Check for any najasah on the ihram garment. Clean them if any.

2. Renew your wudhu’ if necessary. Tawaf is invalidate without wudhu’

GOING TO THE KAABAH

Let’s do dzikir on our way there so we can calm our heart and remember Allah.

When you are finally there, enter with your right foot. And say

رسىل على والسلام والصلاة الله، بسن

رحوتك أبىاب لي افتح اللهن۔ الله

I begin in the name of Allah. May Allah

render Rasulullah (s.a.w) safe from every

evil. O! Allah! Open for me the gates of Your

Mercy

Page 10: Umrah Guidelines for the Young Ones

10

STARTING TAWAF

For boys, you need to wear your Ihram garment as in this picture. The right shoulder must be exposed while the left shoulder remained covered. This is called IDTIBA’ (إضطباع)

Getting orientation right to start tawaf

Here are two diagrams of the orientation around Kaabah. Insya Allah you may understand.

We start at the corner of the BLACK STONE or HAJARATUL ASWAD. Can you find it in the

diagram?

Page 11: Umrah Guidelines for the Young Ones

Umrah Guidelines for the Young Ones

11

Hajaratul Aswad.

1. If you can, go and kiss the stone saying أكبز الله الله بسن

2. If you can’t kiss it then touch it with your right hand and kiss the hand saying the same

thing.

3. But if you can’t because there are too many people just point to the HAJARATUL ASWAD

with your right hand and say أكبز الله , Do not kiss your hand in this case.

NOW START

1. You will go round the Kaabah SEVEN times counter clockwise

2. For the boys it is sunnah to walk faster or slow running for the first three round. This is

called Raml.

3. Your left shoulder will always face the Kaabah

4. You will not turn around

5. You are not to play catchers or race with people.

6. You will concentrate on the ibadah tawaf and remember Allah. Refer to the topic dua

later

7. When you reach the Yemeni corner (refer to the diagram again) Yemeni corner is the

corner right before the hajaratul aswad, touch the corner if it is possible but DO NOT

KISS IT.

8. Between the YEMENI CORNER and the HAJARATUL ASWAD recite this dua.

وقنا حسنت اآلخزة وفي حسنت الدنيا في آتنا ربنا

النار عذاب Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the

Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of

Fire!4

9. Complete the last round until after the corner line of hajaratul aswad.

4 Sunan Abu Dawood Book 4, Number 1887:

Narrated Abdullah ibn as-Sa'ib:

I heard the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) say between the two corners: O Allah, bring us a blessing in this world and a blessing in the

next and guard us from punishment of Hell.

Dua while doing the tawaf

There are no specific supplications (dua) recorded in the authentic hadith during the tawaf. So

you can do either dzikir or recite the ayatul quraan that you have memorized.

Dzikir : Subhanallah, Alhamdullillah, Allahhu Akbar, Astaghfirulah.

You can also make your own dua and ask Allah’s assistance.

Tips

1. Always ask for something good. Never something bad for people

2. Think of what you want beforehand even before going for umrah. Let me help you to

narrow it down

a. Glorify Allah by doing Dzikir. Sends salaah to Prphet Muhammad s.a.w.

b. Thank Allah for the Mercy that He has bestowed you

i. Being able to perform umrah

ii. Being healthy

iii. Having loving parents

iv. Having good life

c. Make dua for yourself

i. Ask for forgiveness. You can specify which sins so Insya Allah you can be

more remorseful

I suggest you have a good sit down alone and write down what you want so Insya Allah

you can focus during the tawaf.

Further tips : It’s beneficial that you can invoke Allah’s names while you make the duas.

Some of Allah’s name

Al ALim (Allah knows everything). Allahu Alim you know what is in my heart.

As Samiee (Allah hears everything). Allahu Samiee. You can hear my need and

my cries. I seek Your assistance

Ar Razaq. Ar Razaq bestow me rizq and shower me with your mercy.

Do you know other Allah’s names that you can invoke during your dua?

COMPLETION OF TAWAF – NOW GO TO MAQAM IBRAHIM

MASYALLAH! You have now completed your tawaf! May Allah accept your ibadah.

Now proceed to Maqam Ibrahim. Recite this ayatul Quran

and take ye the station of Abraham As a place of prayer;

Al Baqarah 2:125

Then pray sunah prayer of two rakaah. Recite uratul

Kafirun in the first rakaah and Suratul Ikhlas in the

second

If the area behind Maqaam Ibrahim is full, you can go

further back.

COMPLETION OF MAQAM IBRAHIM – NOW GO TO THE ZAM ZAM WELL

Have a drink of zam zam. Use your right hand and say Bismillah.

Make dua while you drink and pour some on your head. What would like for yourself? Healthy?

Clean heart? Clever? Good brain? Long memory retention?

Do not splash the water. Wasting is not good.

FINISH DRINKING THE ZAM ZAM WATER

Go back to hajaratul aswad and say ALLAHU AKBAR. If possible touch it with right hand.

Go to the multazam. This is the area between HAJARATUL ASWAD and the KAABAH’S door. The

dua here is the most mustajab. Make intense dua here. Ask Allah what your heart desires.

IT’S TIME TO DO THE SA’EE NOW

Walking in between Safa and Marwah

Go to foot of Safa and recite this

158. Behold! Safa and Marwa are among the Symbols of Allah. so if

those who visit the House In the Season or at other times, should

compass them round, it is no sin In them. and if any one obeys His own

impulse to good,- be sure that Allah is He who recognises and knows.

Then climb the As Safa till you see the Kaabah. Face the Kaabah and declare tawhid to Allah say

الله إلا إله ال

There is no true god except Allah alone

Then make takbeer three times

أكبز’ أكبز ألله’ أكبز ألله’ ألله

Page 16: Umrah Guidelines for the Young Ones

Umrah Guidelines for the Young Ones

16

Then say

وهى الحود وله الولك له له، شزيك لا وحده الله إلا إله ال

قديز شيء كل على

عبده ونصز وعده أنجز له، شزيك لا وحده الله إلا إله ال

وحده األحزاب وهزم

There is no true god except Allah alone, who is

without partner. His is the Kingdom, all praise due to

Him and He is able to do all things. There is no true

god except Allah alone, who is without partner. He

fulfilled His promise, and made His slave prevail, and

He defeated the clans all alone.

Repeat the dua 3 times.

Then you go to Marwah and reach green traffic

light. Run a bit until you reach the next green

traffic light.

Make dua and dzikir until you reach Marwah.

At Marwah repeat what you did at Safa.

Then descend Marwah and go back to Safa.

Repeating everything.

Repeat this to and fro until you make seven

circuits ending at Marwah. 5

5 Saheeh Muslim vol2 p 612 no 2803 (part of hadith) He then went out of the gate to al-Safa' and as he reached near it he recited: "Al-Safa' and al-Marwa are among the signs appointed by Allah," (adding:) I begin with what Allah (has commanded me) to begin. He first mounted al-Safa' till he saw the House, and facing Qibla he declared the Oneness of Allah and glorified Him, and said: "There is no god but Allah, One, there is no partner with Him. His is the Sovereignty. to Him praise is due. and He is Powerful over everything. There is no god but Allah alone, Who fulfilled His promise, helped His servant and routed the confederates alone." He then made supplication in the course of that saying such words three times. He then descended and walked towards al-Marwa, and when his feet came down in the bottom of the valley, he ran, and when he began to ascend he walked till he reached al-Marwa. There he did as he had done at al-Safa'.

COMPLETE SA’EE – GO FOR TAHLUL

For the girls, it is sufficient just to trim some hair. Minimum is three strands of hair.

For the boys – it is encouraged to totally shave the head because Rasullullah prays three times

more for those who shave their hair off6. However it is ok to trim it.

COMPLETE

MASYA ALLAH! You have completed all the umrah rites. Mabrouk! Alhamdullillah!

May Allah accept our ibadah and May all of you grow up to be righteous children.

TAWAF WADA’

We will be staying in Makkah for a few days, Insya Allah. And within these days we must grab as many

opportunities as we can to grab the reward of praying in the masjidil haram. I would recommend for the

young ones to set an objective within the time that we are in Makkah and also in Madinah later.

For example perhaps you can set an objective to complete memorizing the whole of Juz Amma (if not

already). Can you suggest other realistic missions that you can do?

6 Bukhari :: Book 2 :: Volume 26 :: Hadith 785Narrated Abdullah bin Umar:

Allah's Apostle said, "O Allah! Be merciful to those who have their head shaved." The people said, "O Allah's Apostle! And (invoke Allah for) those who get their hair cut short." The Prophet said, "O Allah! Be merciful to those who have their head shaved." The people said, "O Allah's

Apostle! And those who get their hair cut short." The Prophet said (the third time), "And to those who get their hair cut short." Nafi' said that the Prophet had said once or twice, "O Allah! Be merciful to those who get their head shaved," and on the fourth time he added, "And to those who

have their hair cut short."

Page 18: Umrah Guidelines for the Young Ones

Umrah Guidelines for the Young Ones

18

Before we leave Makkah for mAdinah, we will perform our last Tawaf which is called Tawaf Wadaa’. This

is based on this hadith

Bukhari :: Book 2 :: Volume 26 :: Hadith 810

Narrated Ibn Abbas:

The people were ordered to perform the Tawaf of the Ka'ba (Tawaf-al-Wada') as the lastly

thing, before leaving (Mecca), except the menstruating women who were excused.

This tawaf is to show our gratefulness to Allah for making the Umrah easy for all of us and

through His will that we are here in Makkah.

For this tawaf, the man is not required to do Raml nor wear the Idtiba’. But the tawaf will still be

done counterclockwise for seven times.

And we shall leave Makkah immediately after performing this ibadah. Knowing that we should

not linger in makkah after this, make sure you do your shopping or errands before performing

this tawaf.

Young ones, I pray that all of you will grow up to be among the righteous who will make dua for

your parents, who will strive in Allah’s path and who will in return raise righteous Muslims. May

Allah’s Mercy be upon you all, Insya Allah.

NASEEHA

When you are in Makkah, please remember to be patient all the time. If you have not been a very

patient person, this is perhaps the time to be one.

Refrain yourself from saying anything bad. Practice thinking before saying anything.

When you see something that is not pleasing or you funny (and you feel like mocking them), try to

refrain from saying it. If you have said it in your heart, make istighfar quickly. Ask Allah for forgiveness

for this attitude.

This is the time for us to practice good. It is the time for ibadah. Let’s clean our heart from anger and

mockery of other people or things. May Allah make it easier for all of us.

And I pray this is the start of us to make changes in our personality.
