Currentlyunderconstruction, theDesignBuilding attheUniversityofMassachusetts Amherst isthefirstofitskindintheU.S.Atfourstoriesand87,000sf,thismasstimberproject,designed byLeersWeinzapfelAssociates, featuresaglue-laminated (glulam)timbercolumn-and-beamframe,masstimber lateral force-resisting systems,compositecross-laminated timber(CLT)floorsystems,andunconventionalcantilevered forms.Italso includes anopenfloorplan,exposedmasstimberframingthroughout,andacomposite glulamzippertrussspanningacentralcommons,withagreenroofcourtyardabove.

Thispresentation bytheproject’sprincipal architectwillreviewtheprocessandcollaborationrequiredtosee thisgroundbreakingstructuretofruitioninasteel-dominated construction industry.Topicswillinclude design,detailing, procurementofmaterials, codeapprovalsandconstruction,withanemphasis onissues andsolutions.
