Cumbria County Council will be delivering the Ulverston A590 Access Improvements on behalf of Cumbria LEP
The Cumbria Local Growth Fund is contributing up to £4.5m for the Access Improvements Highways England are responsible for the A590 and are advising on the designs for the junctions

Ulverston A590 Access Improvements
Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has been successful in securing £4.5m from the Local Growth Deal to implement junction improvements on the A590 at North Lonsdale Terrace, Quebec Street, and Lightburn Road/Daltongate.

A590 PrimaryThrough Route
● The Local Growth Deal is Central Government funding allocated to Local Enterprise Partnerships aimed at encouraging economic growth
● Good access to the A590 (and M6) is vital for businesses in Cumbria and particularly companies who are part of Cumbria’s Advanced Manufacturing sector, several of which are investing in Ulverston
● The junction layouts will improve access to the A590 and unlock development. It is estimated that the improvements will support development leading to around 540 jobs and £26m GVA
Develops the Strategic Economic Plan (SEP) for Cumbria
Cumbria LEP and Goverment agree the
Cumbria Local Growth Deal which provides
funding from the SLGF to acheive the SEP
Cumbria LEP allocates Local Growth Deal funding to projects that help to deliver the SEP

New Signal Controlled Junction
● Widening of the A590 to create two lanes at the junction
● A single lane approach retained on North Lonsdale Terrace
● Traffic signals at the junction
● Signal controlled pedestrian crossing on the A590
● Parking bays (uncontrolled) on the west side of North Lonsdale Terrace, predominantly for use by residents from adjacent properties
● Build-out of footway to separate parking bays and visually narrow carriageway, this will incorporate dropped kerb access to existing residential driveways
● On-street parking (uncontrolled) parallel to wall of Auction Mart formalised by road markings and surfacing
Proposed Layout
● Construction should begin in early 2016 and be completed in summer 2016
What is the Scheme?
● North Lonsdale Terrace is the main route for non-lorry traffic accessing development sites in south Ulverston
● Traffic signals will help the junction to operate more effectively
● Pedestrians will find it easier to cross the A590
