WHY ULTIMAT ?
THE CHALLENGE
Cracking caused by inherent ground movement issues due to the presence of clay throughout the county
OUR SOLUTION
Half of the contract utilised the traditional approach of 55/10 HRA 100/150pen and the other half ULTIMAT. After three months, significant cracking was clearly visible in the HRA demonstrating superior performance of ULTIMAT

PROGRESS
SKID RESISTANCESimilar SCRIM level to conventional anti-skid and the same high visibility appearance.
REDUCEDWHOLE-LIFE COSTAvoiding several remedial visits / costs re Traffic Management, Anti-skid costs and potentially surface course replacement too due to re Antiskid ‘tearing’ effect.
IMPROVED CLIENT OFFERINGBringing innovation to your client.
REDUCED WEATHER WINDOW RESTRICTIONSAnti-Skids are seasonal and cannot be laid on a wet surface. ULTIGRIP can be laid all year round subject to typical asphalt weather restrictions, eliminating aborted work costs.FASTER
INSTALLATIONQuick single pass, thereby reducing costs and minimising disruption to road users.
DURABLE AND SAFERLonger lasting than typical anti-skid alternative.Reduces the risk of accidents and costly legal claims. Liability ?

Questions

ULTIMAT SAMIULTIMAT SAMI (Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayer) - is a dense and highly flexible asphaltic geogrid alternative which provides long term crack resistance.
Manufactured with a high performance polymer modified binder and typically laid at 25mm thickness directly onto jointed concrete, CBM base, or old asphalt layers where the client has indicated the need for a geogrid approach.
Reflective cracking in asphalt laid over jointed concrete / old CBM is caused by tensile stresses by movement at the slab joints.
These stresses are a result ofconcrete pavement thermal andtraffic induced movement.
Thermal movement generates‘bottom up’ cracking.
Traffic induced movementgenerates ‘top down’ and‘bottom up cracking’.
CRACKING
The flexible SAMI prevents these stresses from causing cracking in the surface course.
Due to the ‘Top down’ cracking potential, we recommend that the SAMI is overlaid with one of our flexible PMB based solutions, i.e. ULTIPHALT ‘P’ or ULTIMAT.
HOW IT WORKS
Proven track record overseas, laid extensively in China and the USA, with the first major UK trial in 2008.
12 months project at Nottingham University to produce technical data and develop design modelling capability.
LONG TERM PERFORMANCE
PROVENPERFORMANCE
• A45 Billing, Northampton - 2008• Hall Quay, Great Yarmouth – 2008• A140 Scole Bypass – 2010• Hertfordshire – 7 sites since 2010• RAF Waddington – 2015
Further sites now in the pipeline, i.e. Nottinghamshire and Worcestershire.
Dr Nick Thom at the University of Nottingham said:
“The material that Tarmac has developed has a quite remarkable resistance to fatigue. This means that as part of an overlay system it presents a very effective barrier to reflective cracking, most especially thermally-driven reflective cracking, leading in many cases to a considerable enhancement in life”.
LONG TERM PERFORMANCE
WHY ULTIMAT SAMI FOR YOUR CLIENT AND YOU ?
ALTERNATIVETO GEOGRIDComparable performance to geogrid but avoids the installation complications.
COST EFFECTIVECost comparable to geogrids and provides the client with the ability to avoid deep reconstruction
SUSTAINABLEExtends the life of asphalt overlays and is fully recyclable at end of life.
PRACTICALLaid using conventional paving equipment.
AVOIDS THE NEED FOR GEOGRID SUB CONTRACTORSDIY approach - Main contractor in total control of their own programme and through use of own resources, retains full profitability in-house.
