ULTIMAT SAMIULTIMAT SAMI (Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayer) - is a dense and highly flexible asphaltic geogrid alternative which provides long term crack resistance.

Manufactured with a high performance polymer modified binder and typically laid at 25mm thickness directly onto jointed concrete, CBM base, or old asphalt layers where the client has indicated the need for a geogrid approach.

Page 55: ULTIMATE TARMAC - AggregatesSame design parameters ... • The first LTA EME supplied in the UK in October 2014 ... standard specifications of · 2015-10-19

Reflective cracking in asphalt laid over jointed concrete / old CBM is caused by tensile stresses by movement at the slab joints.

These stresses are a result ofconcrete pavement thermal andtraffic induced movement.

Thermal movement generates‘bottom up’ cracking.

Traffic induced movementgenerates ‘top down’ and‘bottom up cracking’.

CRACKING

Page 56: ULTIMATE TARMAC - AggregatesSame design parameters ... • The first LTA EME supplied in the UK in October 2014 ... standard specifications of · 2015-10-19

The flexible SAMI prevents these stresses from causing cracking in the surface course.

Due to the ‘Top down’ cracking potential, we recommend that the SAMI is overlaid with one of our flexible PMB based solutions, i.e. ULTIPHALT ‘P’ or ULTIMAT.

Dr Nick Thom at the University of Nottingham said:

“The material that Tarmac has developed has a quite remarkable resistance to fatigue. This means that as part of an overlay system it presents a very effective barrier to reflective cracking, most especially thermally-driven reflective cracking, leading in many cases to a considerable enhancement in life”.
