THE FEAST OF ENTRANCE OF THE MOTHER OF GOD INTO THE TEMPLE November 21, 2016

The feast of the Entrance of the Mother of God Into the Temple praises and glorifies God for His plan of salvation. God prepares for Himself a holy dwelling place. The Byzantine Church never tires of praising the Mother of God for Her role in our salvation. She is called the "Heavenly Tabernacle" in the Kontakion of the Feast and the "Living Tabernacle of God" in the Hirmos. She is given these titles because in Her womb the Word of God has taken flesh and dwelt among us. Her body is the living tabernacle of the Incarnate Word and, through Her, God has taken on our human nature and elevated us to become "sharers of the divine nature" (2 Peter 1: 4). God, Who is beyond our reach and beyond our grasp, comes to dwell among us. This is God's plan, and in the Virgin Mary, this plan of salvation was achieved.

In the Icon of the Entrance of the Mother of God, Mary is shown as a young girl being escorted to the Temple by Her parents, Joachim and Anna. She is also accompanied by the holy virgins carrying candles. In all the icons of the Presentation, the High Priest greets the holy family at the entrance of the Temple.

The entrance into the temple is the main event, so the figures of the holy family and the High Priest are predominant. The Church honors the Virgin Mary as the God-bearer, (in Greek: Theotokos) the one who, in God's plan of salvation, would give birth to God the Word. In the upper corner of some icons, the Virgin Mary is seen already seated in the Temple, and being cared for by the Angels. Thus, Mary, the young girl, is not only presented but also participates in the very task of Her temple life. Through the Icon, we celebrate and share this mystery in the life of the Virgin.

TROPARION - Today is the prelude of the benevolence of God and the herald of the salvation of man, for the Virgin plainly appears in the temple of God and foretells Christ to ail. Let us also with full voice cry out to Her: "Hail, Fulfillment of the Creator's Plan."

Feast of the Blessed Josaphata Hordashevska(November 20, 2016)

Josaphata Hordashevska (1869-1919) The Servant of God Sr Josaphata Michaelina Hordashevska was the first member of the Sisters Servant of Mary Immaculate. In 1869, Michaelina Hordashevska was born in Lviv. At the age of 18, she decided to consecrate her life to God in a contemplative monastery of the Order of St Basil the Great, then the only Eastern-rite woman's congregation. Then the Basilians decided to establish a woman's congregation that focused on the active life, Michaelina was elected to be the first leader. When she agreed, she was sent to the Felician sisters to give her the experience of active paramonastic life. Michaelina took the name "Josaphata", in honour of the Ukrainian martyr St Josaphat Kuntsevych. She was the first superior of the young sisters there, training them in the spirit and charisma of the Sisters Servants: "serve your people where the need is greatest". At the age of 49, she died amidst terrible suffering from bone cancer. She is buried in the generalate of the Sisters Servants in Rome. The process of her beatification started in Rome in 1983.

On June 27, 2001 she was beatified by Pope John Paul II in Lviv. Numerous miracles are ascribed due to her intercession after her death.

SSMI is a congregation of Byzantine Catholic sisters that serve in ethnic Ukrainian and Ruthenian communities worldwide.

In 1892, two visionary priests convinced a 22

year old woman to join them in founding a new religious community; one that would minister specifically to the needs of ordinary folk living in the Halychyna region of Ukraine (then-Galicia,

Austria-Hungary).

Blessed Josaphata, that founding member, found appealing the concept of a community that would have outreach to serve where the need was the

greatest.

The early years were difficult. The new congregation and those whom they served were

The Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate

invite all to the Closing of the

Holy Door of St. Mary’s Chapel

November 20th 3:00 PM

The Sisters Servants have been blessed with the gift of being stewards of the Holy Door of Mercy at St. Mary’s Chapel since February. We have welcomed and prayed with hundreds of pilgrims who have received the plenary indulgence, and some who

have shared with us the blessings, graces and miracles they have received.

November 20th is also a special day for the Sisters Servants as it is Blessed Josaphata day, the day she was born and the date St. Pope John Paul II designated as her feast day

when he proclaimed her "Blessed" in June 2001. Come and join us as we pray for the canonization of

Blessed Josaphata, our Ukrainian Saint of today.

Bishop Paul Chomnycky, Eparch of Stamford, will be the celebrant for the service, along with the attending clergy.

The closing ceremony will include sections of the moleben to the Merciful Christ and sections from the moleben to Blessed Josaphata as well as each person will have the

opportunity for a special anointing.

Finger foods will be served following the service.

We hope that you can join us for this special time of prayer and fellowship. Please call, e-mail or write Sr. Kathleen by Nov. 14th if you plan to attend.

exceedingly poor; yet the congregation grew and spread rapidly in Ukraine and to missions abroad.

Early struggles, however, did not compare to the trials the brave SSMI sisters in Ukraine suffered in subsequent years. There were the deprivations of World War I, World War II with brutal Nazi and Soviet persecutions, and the post-WWII era with its dangerous “underground” missions in the Soviet Union.

N o t w i t h s t a n d i n g hardships, difficulties, and even martyrdom, SSMI has grown to more than 800 sisters and now has ministries and operations in thirteen countries, with a generalate, or motherhouse, in Rome, Italy since 1947. SSMI is a pontifical congregation and is therefore under the Holy Father. However, SSMI works in close cooperation with the ordinaries of the eparchies in which SSMI serves.

Steeped in tradition, yet progressive, SSMI has carried out its humble, yet distinguished, role

to make this a better world through a broad-scoped view of its ministries. Never bound by a singly-defined ministry, SSMI has always taken a flexible view, remaining faithful to its charism and the founders’ words, "Serve where the need is the greatest."

Children’s Divine Liturgy at Cathedral, Philadelphia

November 6, 2016 - A great “THANK YOU” goes to all parents, who brought their children (32 children at both 9:00am and 11:00am Liturgies) for our first Children’s Divine Liturgy at our Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Philadelphia. May God bless you all as we learn ourselves and teach our children to love God and to serve his Holy Church. Our next Children’s Divine Liturgy will be on the first Sunday of the next month, on December 4th at 9:00am and 11:00am. “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these”, says Jesus in St. Matthew’s Gospel (Mt. 19:14). please come to His Church and bring to Jesus a great gift: your heart full of love and dedication. Our Lord Jesus Christ is waiting for YOU.

“We, Your unworthy servants, give thanks to You, O Lord, for Your great benefits which we have received. Glorifying You, we praise, we bless, we thanks, we sing and magnify Your mercy. And as Your servants, we call out to You with love: ‘O Benefactor, our Savior, glory be to You.’ “

“We thank You, O Lord God of hosts, that You have deemed us worthy to stand now at Your holy altar, falling before Your mercy for our sins and for the sins of thoughtlessness of the people.”

“It is right and just to sing of You, to bless You, to praise You, to thank You, to worship You everywhere in Your domain.”

“We sing of You, we bless You, we thank You, O Lord, and we pray to You, our God.”

“We give You thanks, O invisible King, for by Your infinite power You created all things and in Your great mercy, brought all things from nothingness into being.”

“Stand aright! Having received the divine, holy, immaculate, immortal, heavenly, and life-giving, awesome Mysteries of Christ, let us rightly thank the Lord.”

“We thank You, O Master, Lover of Mankind, and benefactor of our souls, that even today You have made us worthy of Your heavenly and immortal Mysteries.”

May we never tire of offering thanks to God not only on Thanksgiving Day, but every day of one’s life.

Year of Mercy Column - Don’t Leave It To The Priests

Nov 20th: by Mr. Peter Yaremko.

In this final column of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, which ends today, the message is to the point. Our call—as individuals—is nothing less than to spread the news of God’s mercy.

It was Vatican Council II that issued this call to us, the laity, because we “live in the midst

of the world and its concerns.”

Recalling that after Jesus had sent out the Twelve (Luke 9:2), he sent seventy-two others to spread his kingdom throughout the earth to offer all people a share in god’s mercy.

In the Church there is a diversity of ministry but a unity of mission, with the laity sharing in the priestly office of Jesus.

The Council fathers stated flatly that we, the laity, are called by God to exercise our mission by openly bearing witness to Christ and promoting the salvation of humankind.

We are challenged to do this with the ardor Jesus himself demonstrated. This means with passion, fervor, zeal, intensity, fire, emotion, enthusiasm, eagerness.

A tall order. But one we cannot walk away from now that the Year of Mercy has ended.

Our prayer today: Lord, enkindle in us a missionary zeal so we may boldly proclaim Jesus in our daily lives and ceaselessly promote the salvation of our brothers and sisters in every corner of the world.
