I-Sat Connection Programme

Overarching Aim:To deliver tangible economic benefits from the use of UK satellite technology to countries that currently do not have these benefits and generate a bridge between the UK space sector and strategic emerging countries by doing so

To use Inmarsat’s mobile satellite capabilities for the provision of high quality digital services that drive economic growth in emerging markets Improve access to

digital services

Develop evidence base for new

business models

Grow the space industry’s role in

emerging markets

Key Objectives

1

2

3

To strengthen the evidence base and define and test new innovative commercial models that demonstrate the critical role of mobile satellite communications (and particularly those of UK companies) in supporting inclusive digital economies in emerging markets

To share the research, case-studies and knowledge from the work streams to grow the overall industry, allowing others to follow up on our projects and replicate them

The Consortium will deliver against three objectives via two in-country use cases and multi-country research in emerging markets

200 banking agents equipped to serve or improve service to 5K

HHs

50 clinics, 400 health workers, 10k mothers with access to

health information

Landmark study with high-value opportunities, new business

models and case studies; knowledge-sharing platform

Increasing connectivity to drive inclusive digital services: Equity Bank, Kenya

Extending access to Maternal and Child Health:Mobile Alliance for Maternal Action (MAMA), Nigeria

Establishing evidence of the business case and the role of satellite in digital economies:Multi-country action research

Using satellite technology, Equity Bank, Kenya’s largest retail bank, will be able extend their services to the most marginalized and remote regions in Kenya.

MAMA’s proven service delivery model (India, South Africa, Bangladesh) of providing maternal and child health services will be brought to the physically and technologically disconnected rural communities in Nigeria

Through our overarching research framework, we will significantly advance the knowledge base for delivery of successful satellite-enabled services in developing and emerging markets

Kenya Project - Example Use Case In-Country Findings

The Agro-vet Agent has a key role in bringing the stakeholders together, acting as a hub for information download for the farmers. It also has a new role as a dealmaker between the farmers and the buyers from which it takes commission, and provides a marketing channel between input providers and farmers from which it can take an advertisement fee.

Equity Bank and Inmarsat are the enablers of these solutions, via connectivity and Equity Foundation information services, potentially underpinned by Equity supply chain finance and mobile payment systems.

In return Equity Bank gains more commission revenue from increased agent transactions and supply chain finance, increases its competitive advantage, increases its customer base, and obtains vast amounts of data on farmers, products, market prices, and agent finances.

Digital Economies Research: four pilot countries selected, building hypotheses on breakout applications

In-country research Market sizingExpert interviews

BrazilRobust private sector and

government spending presents a “middle-income”

test case. Exploring applications in M2M,

railways, environmental monitoring

PhilippinesArchipelagic geography and poor-quality terrestrial infrastructure offer unique testing grounds. Exploring applications in disaster recovery/resilience, e-health, and rural banking

NigeriaLarge, diverse economy with manifold

connectivity and infrastructure challenges; solutions tested and proven here are likely

to be applicable elsewhere. Exploring applications in logistics, infrastructure, and

M2M

EthiopiaWidespread and persistent connectivity gaps create many opportunities for satellite-enabled services. Monopoly on terrestrial communications mean government collaboration be critical. Exploring applications in education with Open University

I-Sat Connection: Key learnings and next steps

10

Key learnings

Next steps

• Nigeria: Sustainability modelling has provisionally validated value-for-money in the Nigeria pilot, opening opportunities for government, foundation, and ODA funding

• Kenya: Four types of use profiles identified with willingness to pay for five types of satellite-enabled services; a provisional business model indicating agent-level breakeven in 6-18 months

• Digital Economies: Persistent gaps in terrestrial coverage in a number of developing countries, combined with rapidly growing needs for resilient, persistent connectivity present a wide range of opportunities for satellite-enabled services. Challenge is not finding a viable application; the challenge is choosing which to test from a wide range of possibilities.

• Nigeria and Kenya: Deploy first round of applications, perform field research on uptake and usage combining questionnaires and human centered design, update software and services based on feedback

• Digital Economies: Finalize business case hypotheses to be confirmed with in-country research. In-country, landscape similar already-existing pilots and begin conversations with potential pilot partners.
