Gross domestic expenditure on R&D in 2011 was $36.5 billion (£27.4 billion; 1.77% of GDP)
No. 2 on many S&I indicators and No. 1 ranking in comparator group in terms of overall quality of research (FWCI) in 2012
UK has just 0.9% of population but 16% of most highly cited papers (ranking 2nd in comparator group, behind the US)
42 UK universities are ranked amongst the 100 most international universities globally – often as a result of their excellent research outputs
1 in 7 world leaders had some form of education in the UK

UK Research Highlights
UK research is international
• 47% of all doctoral students in the UK come from outside
the UK
• 72% of researchers in the UK were internationally mobile
between 1996-2012
• 48% of publications from the UK are produced with
international collaborations
• Internationally collaborative research is more highly
cited
• Mobile researchers are more productive

What is the Newton Fund?
• The Newton Fund is a £735 million fund operated by the
UK's Department of Business, Innovation and Skills
• It will run until 2021
• There will be approximately £2 million per year for Indonesia
“Through the Newton Fund, the UK will use its strength in research and
innovation to promote the economic development and social welfare of
partner countries. By working together on bi-lateral and multi-lateral
programmes with a research and innovation focus, the UK will build
strong, sustainable, systemic relationships with partner countries.”
