Quality and Quantity of ingredients
and size
But whilst we invest in R+D ,
people and innovative ideas at the
front end there are some really
scary things going on behind the
scenes that I wanted to briefly
discuss today

Faulty Cables Examined by Prysmian
Fake Fire Resistant Cables -1Cable markings 2x1.5mm² sq. FIRE FLEX 300/500 VOLT BS6360BS6387 CAT B IEC 331BRITISH MADE CABLE
Key points1. Not fire resistant – PVC insulation & PVC sheath – fails within 2 mins.2. Not compliant with any standards marked on sheath.3. Copper coated steel conductors – low conductivity – not compliant.4. Steel circuit protective conductor – low conductivity – not complaint.5. Probably not British made.

BRITISH MADE CABLE
Key points1. Not fire resistant – PVC insulation & polyethylene sheath.2. Not compliant with any standards marked on sheath.3. Copper coated aluminium conductors – low conductivity – not to spec.4. Undersize circuit protective conductor – also Cu coated Al.5. Not LPCB approved – uses another manufacturer’s approval number.6. Probably not British made.
Non-compliant PVC Artic grade Flex
Cable Markings<HAR> 3183AG 1.5 SQMM BS6500
Key points
1. Undersize conductor – low conductivity - ~1mm² instead of 1.5mm²2. Cable sheath falls apart in low temperature bend test. 3. Not compliant with standard marked on sheath
Non-compliant Armoured cables
Cable MarkingsELECTRIC Grade 1100V as per BS546735 Sqmm
Key points1. Insufficient steel wire armour conductivity – wire diameter too small2. Armour wires not sufficiently galvanised – corrosion evident3. Insufficient copper conductor conductivity – more like a 25 mm²4. Not complaint with standard marked on sheath
1. Reels marked 100 on the label with no unit of measure (although the invoice states 100m) –
actually measured as 100 yards.
2. BASEC label on reels although product not BASEC
approved.
3. Reels marked 100m yet measure at 94m
4. Printing of erroneous info on cable/labels
Other issues found
Many of you here today have either
purchased , stocked or installed
some of these products!
Many of you are not aware of the
seriousness of the problem
You cannot really tell by looking at a
Cable that something’s up
The Problem
1. Prysmian , along with support of all members
of the British Cable Association , has come
up with a strategy
2. A Strategy to Reinforce the Positioning and
Selection of Approved Cables within the UK
Market
3. Reinforce responsibilities of those in supply
chain
4. Deliver a clear message
So what are we going to do about it ?
Status on Approved Cables Initiative to Date
•Strategy paper circulated to all key players
•Meetings held with Executive members of
ECA, EDA, NICEIC/ESC, ENA
•Prysmian met with local Hampshire MP –
Chris Huhne – that has resulted in PQ’s
having been raised
•Chris Huhne made contact with Ed Milliband

Involve all supply chain in this policing not just manufacturers
If do not communicate, then whole project is of little value
Communications must include:
a) NAC manufacturers
b) NAC distributors
c) HO’s of wholesaler whose branches are selling NAC cable
d) NICEIC, ECA, EDA, ENA –
Risk alert message to all members to check this product/ manufacturer/ W/S branch/ Distributor

Features and benefits when
using Prysmian FP Cables
Unique damage resistant Insudite™ insulation:
• BENEFIT : Most F/A cables use soft easy to damage insulation which can
lead to faults meaning increased time fault finding/commissioning – not with
FP.
• BENEFIT to Client: Risk (of soft insulation) not left with client in his building
for whole of life building maintenance.
Easy to access Prysmian dedicated

FP FIREFIX™?
• A fire resistant cable clip – for use with FP200 Gold and FP Plus cables
• Alternative to AP or Saddle clip
• Quick and easy to install using SPIT Pulsa gas nailing tool
• One clip can install pair of cables
Why develop FP FIREFIX™?
• Introduction of a faster, lower installed cost fixing system meeting the requirements of BS5839-1:2002
• Reduced number of electricians available –FP FIREFIX™ system means that an electrician does not need to be used for all steps of a cable installation
• Available in Red or White
Benefits
• Quickly fixes to various substrates:
– Steel + Composite steel decking
– Masonry + Concrete +Block work
• Reduces installation time and costs - up to 10 times quicker to install than conventional methods
• Requires no rawl plugs, drilling or screwing
• Can be installed before cables – reducing the need to use an electrician at this stage
• Does not require installer to hold clip during installation –improving safety when working in difficult locations
