In January 2011 fifty brave students

registered for the very first BA degree to

be offered by the Faculty of Art, Design

and Architecture (FADA) at the University

of Johannesburg. I taught this group

Design Studies and remember them as

enthusiastic, bright and eager to learn about

design history, theory and criticism. In 2014

nine even more courageous students from

this group was selected and completed the

first Honours degree to be offered at FADA

specialising in Communication Design.

The publication you hold in your hands

is a record of this first group of Honours

students’ work and as you will see they

have created designs of an exceptionally

high standard. The work is challenging and

creative and shows how communication

design can be used for the benefit of society.

The quality of the work also affirms the

dedication, passion and expertise of the

team of lecturers who guided them on their

Honours journey in 2014.

So join us in celebrating the work of these

fearless students. They have paved the way

for others and it is going to be a hard act to

follow!

DESIGN THINKING

DESIGN FOR PARTICIPATION

Based on the OpenIdeo platform, and

utilising the framework of the Design Indaba

Your Street Competition, students were

asked to identify and solve a community

issue within their own neighbourhoods.

Due to the open-ended nature of the user-

centered question, solutions could fall

within/across a number of Communication

Design areas, with outcomes including a

rain to drinking water filtration system, a

firewood transporter, a pop-up bus stop and

and an exposed wiring safety awareness

campaign for the Johannesburg CBD.

In 2013 the City of Johannesburg adopted

Food Resilience Strategy as one of its key

priorities in its integrated development

plan. The programme seeks to generate

employment and sustainable livelihoods

as a key part of food security. Within this

framework, students were tasked with

working alongside various members of the

Soweto Farmers Forum to solve community

based problems; for instance recruitment

of members to the Forum, branding,

marketing, nutritional education on produce,

guides to improve farming practice, and

budgeting.

CRAFTING (ISTD)

SELF-REFLEXIVITY

Students were tasked with answering

an International Society of Typographic

Design’s 2014 Student Assessment brief.

The ISTD views typography as part of a

holistic communication design paradigm –

deliberately breaking the perceived tradition

of the typo/graphic designer as a narrow

provider of visual skills. Themes included

PROTEST!, an Art School Manifesto, and

Paper Messengers.

Students were asked to self-reflexively

situate themselves within the wider context

of the field of Communication Design and

the ‘industry’. Utilising various concepting

techniques, they then had to ask the

questions, “who am I as a communication

designer” and “what does my audience

need to understand about me”. Students

then devloped a positioning statemtent,

and an innovative, convincing method to

communicate this to san identified target

market. This project took various forms

including a portfolio of work, a website, the

launch of a clothing brand and so on.

RESEARCH-LED PRACTICE

Students were tasked with utilising a

research-led appraoch to practice based on

their Honours research essays. Based on

this, students designed their own objectives,

target market and brief. Results included

a photo-essay on masculinity, a satyrical

critique the concept of the Utopia, and

primary research map of explring opinions

around road name changes in Pretoria.
