Sponsorship Prospectus UIA 2014

The UIA World Congress of Architects, UIA 2014, will be held at the International Convention Centre in Durban from 4-9 August 2014. This is the fi rst time that this Congress is being held in Southern Africa and is a unique opportunity for the anticipated 5000 delegates from around the world and related industry to engage in matters of mutual interest.

Meet your target market in an environment where they are looking for solutions and build relationships with key decision makers who decide on which products and services to purchase.

The overarching theme of UIA 2014 is “Architecture Otherware”, which seeks neither consensus nor commonality alone, instead allows a steady stream of ideas, images, scenarios, especially stories, in which spatial alternatives and irrationalities sit alongside effi ciencies and solutions.

We strive to celebrate that in all venues and activities of the Congress. In the true spirit of collaboration and sustainability, we have elected venues and activities that embody the spirit of the meeting and the co-sponsoring society. We have prepared a set of activities and support options which celebrate the values and mission of the UIA and SAIA in the hope that you, as a community of industry partners, will wish to support.

All sponsoring organisations can expect to enjoy increased exposure throughout the Congress as well as opportunities for networking with key participants.

Additional benefi ts of Sponsorship include:

• The opportunity to reach is global audience in the most cost effective way• The opportunity for an organisation to showcase its latest products and/or services• The opportunity for increased brand exposure through prominent display of the sponsoring

organisation’s logo and literature in UIA 2014 documents

South African Institute of Architects (SAIA)

The South African Institute of Architects (SAIA), since its inception in 1927 as the Institute of South African Architects (ISAA), has been the voice of architecture and the architectural profession in South Africa. After it was established through a Private Act of Parliament, it was the regulatory body for the profession in South Africa and represented the Institute on several international forums over many decades.

In 1970 the SA Council for Architects (SACA) was established through national legislation (Act 35 of 1970) and membership of the ISAA was a requirement for registration. Although, in their individual capacities South African architects continued to enjoy recognition from their peers abroad, the ISAA was eventually expelled from all international organisations as a result of the apartheid policies of the country. Few persons of colour had the opportunity to study architecture, and the profession was generally regarded to serve only a privileged sector of society.

After the democratic elections of 1994 the Institute was reconstituted and membership became voluntary in 1996. SAIA was invited to join the Africa Union of Architects (AUA), the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA), and was fi nally allowed back into the fold of the International Union of Architects (UIA) in 1999 at their General Assembly in Beijing. Now, barely nine years later we have been honoured by the UIA to host its triennial World Congress in South Africa in 2014.

International Union of Architects (UIA)

The International Union of Architects (UIA) is a non-governmental organisation uniting the professional association of architects in over 100 countries around the world. Founded in 1948, it represents approximately 1 300 000 architects and is one of the most complete and best-structured associations among the NGOs accredited by the United Nations.

Its mission is to represent the architectural profession and its activities, particularly within the framework of international relations: between architectural organisations and architect of different countries; with parallel, non-governmental organisations in order to develop interdisciplinary contacts and actions, and with intergovernmental institutions (the union is, in its particular fi eld, the only professional organisation recognised as having an advisory status, particularly in relation to UNESCO, ECOSOC,UNIDO, ILO, WHO, UN Habitat, UNDP, UNEP and UNCED).

Its secretariat, located in Paris, is responsible for the Union’s management and general administration.

African Union of Architects (AUA)

The Africa Union of Architects forms region 5 of the UIA. It operates independent of the UIA but also constitutes region fi ve of the UIA which is Africa. SAIA plays an active role in the activities of the AUA and the 2014 Congress would be promoted through the member sections.Africa has approximately 55050 Architects.

The AUA has been co-opted as a partner for Durban 2014 and is expected to participate in all the organisational structures.

South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP)

The South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP) is the statutory body which regulates the practice of architecture in South Africa. Practitioners in all categories need to be registered with SACAP in order to be able to practice in this country. This includes Architects, Senior Technologists, Technologists and Draughtspersons.

SACAP membership is over 10,000 with the number of practices in excess of 6500. In 2011 the number of candidate members recorded was 1899. As a co-opted partner SACAP provides us with access to all these practitioners as well as State institutions.

UIA World Congress

The UIA organizes a World Congress every three years. This Congress is organized by a Member Section, in a city selected to host it. The selection is made six years in advance.

The main goal of the Congress is to provide architects with an opportunity to participate in a series of culturally and professionally enriching events based on a specifi c theme and establish or re-establish contact with colleagues from different countries, particularly from the country hosting the Congress.

In order to be successful, a UIA Congress must be able to attract both practicing architects and academics, well-known architects, those involved in international relations, architects linked to the construction sector, as well as young professionals and students of architecture.

A UIA Congress usually includes the following activities:

• An opening ceremony at which the Congress theme is explained to the audience, with the participation of authorities from the host country and city, and from the Union.

• Three or four plenary sessions with main speakers at which the Congress theme is developed into sub-themes.

• A series of seminars and workshops that address the Congress theme in greater detail and are open to the participation of architects from all over the world by means of the submission of papers.

• Conferences and exhibitions organised by the UIA Sections, Regions, and Working Bodies.

• The organisation of a UIA-UNESCO competition for architecture students, the results of which will be presented at the Congress.

• Social events offering architects the chance to meet and get to know other architects from around the world. There are usually at least four: (1) a welcome reception, (2) a ceremony at which the UIA prizes are awarded, (3) a special night for students and awarding of the student competition prize, and (4) a farewell party.

• An exhibit of building materials and products; and

• Study trips to discover the architecture of the city or the country hosting the Congress.

There could also be a daily programme for accompanying persons, consisting of visits to relevant cultural and tourist places of interest.

Aims and Objectives of Durban 2014

Benefi ts to the Profession

1 The Congress provides members of the South African architectural fraternity exposure to other practitioners in Africa and the world. Some of the established stars as well as movers and shakers, upcoming stars etc. (not only Architects) would also be present.

2 It provides a platform for South Africa to assess its position in the broader architectural discourse. The profession in SA is recognised as a world player and it is important that we maintain world standards and where possible become world leaders.

3 The Congress allows for critical engagement of challenges and opportunities in the SA built/ environment context which straddles developed/developing world. As the hosts, we get to prioritise the issues we would like to be addressed and ensure that they are on the agenda.

4 It provides an opportunity to improve the profi le of the profession and promote it in schools and local communities.

5 The Congress provides members of industry with a platform to showcase their products; technological inventions and innovations to an international audience. This can be done via the congress exhibition and individual promotions.

6 Complement educational institutions - whose resources are limited – to increase the number of graduates being produced.

7 Support the RPL system which enables practitioners to graduate to higher levels of registration via a structured system managed by SACAP.

8 Support for students and graduates to bridge the divide between academia and practice.

9 Congress must be structured to make up most CPD 2014 requirements for registered SACAP members.

How to Achieve the Benefi ts

1 Legacy programmes: Pre- and post-conference (these can be linked to corporate social responsibility programmes of potential sponsors).

2 Pre-conference:Increased exposure of the profession in the public domain, programmes in schools to promote the profession, and programmes to prepare learners to enter the profession.

3 Up-skilling within the profession – RPL.

4 Promotion of architecture through promotion of the congress through Congress programme and activities.

5 Post-conference: In addition to continuing some pre-conference activities, other initiatives such as bursaries for targeted studies in South Africa or Africa, educational tours etc.

6 The proposed establishment of an independent ‘Foundation for Architecture’ to act as a think tank on issues related to Architecture and the built environment.

VENUE

The UIA 2014 congress will be held at the Nkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC) in Durban. A focal point of Durban’s business district, the ICC Durban is a functional space in an aesthetic environment.

Centrally located and just a half of an hour from the airport, ICC Durban is adjacent to many hotels and beaches. ICC Durban is one of the most advanced conference facilities in the world. Flexibility and versatility are key factors in the design of this state-of-art technology-driven centre.

It is a purpose-built, fully air-conditioned centre with three convention halls that are interlinked but separate. Moveable walls allow for a number of different venue confi gurations. Alternatively the halls can be opened up to form one large venue with seating for 5 000 delegates or 7000m squared of column-free fl oor space.

Together with the adjacent Exhibition Centre, the ICC can double its capacity to accommodate10 000 conference delegates. The centres can function independently or as two halves of one whole. This is achieved by closing Walnut Road, a brick-paved concourse between the two centres, to provide easy access for delegates.

Theme

architecture otherwhere

Can we imagine coming together as architects with the burden of our geographical or historical trajectories temporarily suspended, upended, turned upside down? No longer south looking north or east opposed west, less global stratifi cations embedded in the conversation. If we can hesitate for a moment, seeking neither consensus nor commonality alone, instead allowing a steady stream of ideas, images, scenarios, especially stories, in which spatial alternatives and irrationalities sit alongside effi ciencies and solutions. What probable worlds emerge?

If we are not offering up only visions, promises and clarity but spontaneous irritants and details in the thick of things. What might such a gathering consist of but chaotic platforms, idea auctions, legislative rumbles, assembled reviews and collective debates? In Durban all of the myriad talks, discussions, conversations and arguments will be registered and deployed so that no one or little is left out and lost. Amplifi cation, echoes and focus can be brought to bear in multiple modes of speech; so many of us are given a chance to speak, all to listen.

Bringing more of us into the conversation, while challenging simple rhythms and patterns could also present harmonic discord and interferences as much as diluted cacophony, the polyglot of sounds that bring to life global conferences.

Even acknowledgment of centuries of uneven development does little to bring about reparation or offer solutions that do more than perpetuate convenient current trajectories. So shuffl ing things around as has already begun in areas of academic enquiry or as disruptive practices in the economy, present possibilities for probing answers for questions and addressing concerns put aside, immediately, not as in some indeterminate future. Post many things now, colonial, communist, ecstatic capitalist, utopian, ecological. Built form demands to be interrogated anew with many of its generative forces out of alignment. And so we might have peripheries - not replacing centres - but placing these spatial hierarchies in question.

In Durban this new geography, imagined worlds once and still to be conceived, digital realities, alternatives electronically evolving in sites, places yet to be identifi ed, wild visions of areas mired in harsh realities; all this will for a week be gathered together for architects with many divergent views to engage in collective debate. Impossible-in-Durban alongside Durban-in-your-face, Durban-turned-around with fragile-Durban, the city arrested as much as the city in non-stop motion. The city veering between catastrophe and opulence that contain intended architectural components of myriad scales and intensities.
