15 DECEMBER 2015 UHC DAY IN THE PHILIPPINES
UHC Forum For Nurses Through the years, the advocacy of the Alliance of Young Nurse Leaders and Advocates (AYNLA) includes the introduction of key public health and global health concepts to young nurses. AYNLA shows them how the work of nurses not only touches the lives of the people clients but also contribute to the attainment of the national and global targets. It provides greater sense of accomplishment to what they do and encourages them to advocate for a bigger cause. AYNLA also bridges policy makers and the young nurses by providing a venue for consultation and policy discussions.

Universal Health Coverage Day in the Philippines
15 DECEMBER 2015 UHC DAY IN THE PHILIPPINES
Last December 12, 2015, AYNLA is one with the world in celebrating the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by organizing a forum for nurses in UHC. The forum introduced to nurses the history of UHC and its primary purpose while emphasizing the important role of nurses in the achievement of UHC goals, as well as, the Sustainable Development Goals.
The program was divided into four topics: 1. The Global Health Transition: From MDGs to SDGs
The Sustainable Development marks a new era for global development, offering a wider scope and ambition of development goals. This topic shows how UHC is positioned in the overall development agenda. UHC is said to be the heart of all the health agenda, as it cuts across other health goals. 2. The UHC and its Journey in the Philippines
In 2010, the Government of the Philippines launched the Kalusugang Pangkalahatan or the Philippine Universal Health Care strategy. This topic shows how UHC is translated locally, its gaps, challenges and way forward. 3. Positioning the Role of Nurses in Achieving UHC
AYNLA believes that the caring role of nurses is its best asset in achieving UHC. The lecture introduced the basic concepts of UHC to nurses, reminded them of what nurses have been contributing in the global health development and challenged them to work towards attainment of UHC in their own ways.
The speaker encouraged them to utilise CARE approach to bridge nursing and UHC:
COMPASSION and sensitivity to the poor and the marginalised,
ADVOCATE to uphold both the rights of the clientele and the nurses,
RESEARCH and document successful experiences,
EDUCATE and propagate evidence-based knowledge.
4. My Own UHC Story: Concretizing UHC
The health workforce is the foundation of UHC. The stories behind it are testaments of its progress. Dr. Afuang shared her inspiring UHC story from the perspective of a nurse and a public health practitioner.

15 DECEMBER 2015 UHC DAY IN THE PHILIPPINES
A panel discussion ensued wherein nurses are given chance to provide their insights, comments and questions about the topics discussed. Some of the issues raised include whether ‘Point of Care Program’ of PhilHealth has been implemented; existence of institution that looks into palliative care nursing; and strategies on how to actively participate more to UHC campaign. Lastly, a participant added that the lack of engagement of nurses in the policy table is true. Filipino nurses are not united in asserting its rights. She gave an example that the increase in the salary of nurses took off because the teachers were strong in pushing for it.
UHC Commitment Selfie Wall Nurses have their photos taken holding banners depicting our call that “Health for all is right, smart and overdue.” They are requested to share their selfies and photos in their social media accounts to show their support for UHC.
UHC Day Nursing & Medical Mission In solidarity with the UHC Day, our nurses in the Province of Abra, together with the local community health professionals, organized a nursing and medical mission. The mission extended health services to the underserved communities particularly the municipality of Bangued, San Antonio. Health
education & health promotion were conducted; free consultations and medicines were rendered.
UHC Social Media Campaign AYNLA likewise utilize the UHC digital toolkit by posting and sharing the same via Facebook, Twitter, Website, and Email. Statistics shows that there’s an increase of 200% engagement and response, reaching more than 25,000 users across the world based on Facebook report.
