Understanding, Generous, Loveable, You can be a great way to support a great cause, attract new customers, and round up the old.

The U.G.L.Y Bar Challenge is an annual campaign that challenges bars across 26 Counties in Western Pennsyslvania to compete against each other to raise the most money for the National MS Society. Each establishment hosts their own events and promotions—the more creative the better!

This year sure looks U.G.L.Y.!! We are encouraging all bars to participate and host an event the benefit the National MS Society throughout the year. There are many event ideas that you can choose from to ensure a great time for you and your bar guests. If you get a lot of neighboring bars to participate you could even make it a pub crawl.

This is the season to prove that your bar is the most understanding, generous, and loveable! The U.G.L.Y. Bar Challenge was established as a fun collaborative way for bars, restaurants, and pubs in the community to get involved in a cause.

New for 2011-2012 Campaign:

• Monthly Turn-ins • Bigger, Better Prizes • Raffle & Incentives, including Event Tickets • Merchandise • County Awards and Recognition

Win trips, prizes and FREE advertising while helping Create a World Free of MS!

WELCOME TO THE 2011

WE ARE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT MS NOWAbout MSMultiple sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system, interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 400,000 people in the U.S. and over 2.1 million worldwide.

About the National MS SocietyMS stops people from moving. The National MS Society exists to make sure it doesn’t. The Society addresses the challenges of each person affected by MS by funding cutting-edge research, driving change through advocacy, facilitating professional education, collaborating with MS organizations around the world, and providing programs and services designed to help people with MS and their families move their lives forward. In 2010 alone, through its national office and 50-state network of chapters, the Society devoted over $159 million to programs that enhanced more than one million lives. To move us closer to a world free of MS, the Society also invested nearly $37 million to support 325 research projects around the world. The Society is dedicated to achieving a world free of MS. Join the movement at nationalMSsociety.org .

Early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can make a difference for people with multiple sclerosis. Learn about your options by talking to your health care pro-fessional and contacting the National MS Society at nationalMSsociety.org or 1-800-FIGHT-MS (344-4867).

WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?LOCAL ANd REGIONAL BENEFITS:

Every hour of every day, another person receives the life changing diagnosis of MS. MS is a chronic disease of the central nervous system with no known cause or cure. Symptoms may include numbness, fatigue, paralysis or loss of vision. For more than 50 years, the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the National MS Society has been at the forefront of providing help and hope through programs and services for people with MS, their friends and loved ones, including:

Local MS Champion Harry Zourelias Spirit AwardThe Harry Zourelias Spirit Award will be awarded annually to the bar or restaurant owner who displays all of the characteristics that Harry had embodied throughout his life and also throughout the time he had spent fundraising for the U.G.L.Y. Bartender Contest.

Harry was a truly unique and inspiring man, who devoted time year round to his family and especially his wife, Lisa. Over the past 10 years Harry, Lisa and Inn the Ruff have raised over $100,000 and have taken home the top fundraising honors for Allegheny County for 4 years running.

We here at the National MS Society want to honor the memory of Harry by choosing a participant each year that carries on his tradition in their fundraising efforts and helps to make the world free of MS. We here at the Western Pennsylvania Chapter, would like to thank Harry for the memories and would like to thank Lisa and the Zourelias family for their continued contributions to the National MS Society.

“Harry Zourelias was one of those kind of guys you just don’t meet anymore….always had a smile or a balloon animal for you that he just made….in fact, he’d wear those balloon animals around his head all the time for our MS UGLY Kick-off parties…he and his beautiful wife Lisa were a perfect fit and man, did they raise money for MS!!! Inn the Ruff, champions for how many years running now?? Harry and Lisa were so committed to the cause of someday finding a cure for MS, and year round too, not just during the fall UGLY campaign!”

STEPS TO BECOMING AN U.G.L.Y. FUN-RAISER1. Recruit your U.G.L.Y. team. Gather fellow employees, servers other bartenders, patrons and friends to help with your fund-raising campaign. The more people involved, the more money you raise!

2. Plan your campaign. Use the ideas and forms enclosed to plan your bar’s special events for the contest. Careful planning is the key to success.

3. Display your promotional pieces. Hang your poster in a visible location. This keeps your MS funds separate from other money. Also, start covering the walls with signature cards.

4. Have FUN raising funds for Multiple Sclerosis. That’s what this contest is all about! Use the items we have provided and use special events to add to your total. Remember to plan ahead and publicize your events.

5. Send in the money you have raised. ONCE A MONTH mail your Report Card with the self-addressed envelope.

6. Use our Sponsors! Post your establishment on barsmart.com or download the Cocktail Compass application from I Tunes to your IPHONE or IPAD or PC. For directions or links visit uglyMSevents.com

GOAL SETTING: WHO HAS THE MOST U.G.L.Y. SPIRIT?Establishing a goal is an easy way to maintain motivation as well as give you and your team of staff a benchmark for success. We encouragebar managers or captains to set goals for them-selves and their staff, while keeping these tips in mind.

∫ GOAL S SHO U LD BE RE ALIS T IC , B U T SIGNIFIC AN T If it requires hard work to attain, it will be a source of more pride for your team.

∫ DON ’ T ARB I T R ARILY SE T A GOAL WI T HO U T INPU T FROM T HE T E A M Having them believe in the goal from the word “go” will make your job as leader that much easier.

∫ DON ’ T FORGE T TO SE T BOT H PER SONAL & T E A M FU NDR AISING GOAL S Lead by example. Share your fundraising goal with your team.

∫ DON ’ T KEEP YO U R GOAL A SECRE T Use e-mail, webpages, and even internal company newsletters to communicate goals — and how close your team is to attaining them.

*If you would like more suggestions and guidelines for goal setting, or would like to request goal setting worksheets, please contact Susan at 412.261.6347 or at [email protected].

Every bar fundraises differently! Maybe signature cards and beads are your thing or holding an event once or twice a month helps you raise money.

3. Contact Susan at [email protected] for our U.G.L.Y. Promtional Kit!
