None of the world around us would be

    possible without materials innoation. The

structure and nature of everything are dened

by their materials, and only through a thorough

understanding of these materials can a person

truly understand the fabric of the modern

    world. Innoatie materials engineering

is what makes the latest technology a reality,

beyond the scientic theories and research

laboratories. The world surges forward ever

faster so there is always a crucial need for

superior materials to pave the way. Materials

engineers and scientists are the ones whom

we turn to, to meet and exceed those needs.

    At Nanyang Technological University (NTU),

we are offering a comprehensive programme

for those whose interest lies in discovering

more about the world of materials engineering.

commercialise research ideas; this is only possible within an environment that nurtures and

actively encourages innovation. Spin-off companies by Professors, Alumni and Students are

good examples of a strong innovative culture in the school.

The school actively collaborates with industrial

partners at all levels, be it working on industrial

    sponsored projects and/or having joint-

    laboratories on campus. These collaborations

give students ample opportunities to apply

theories learnt in classrooms to practicalpractice, and allow the school to stay relevant

    to the industry.

E-Termnity was started by a groupof MSE undergraduates. Their concept

involved developing a baby milk bottle made

from special materials that changed colours

according to the temperature of its content,

and this won the heart of judges at a business

plan competition. They won seed fund to turn

    their idea into reality.

I have received quality education throughNTUs holistic approach to teaching. My twomonths at Yonsei University in Korea and 6

months at Linkoping University in Sweden, as

part of the NTU global exchange programme, have provided me with international exposure.

While studying overseas, I have also had the

opportunity to travel to over 30 cities within

Europe and Korea within this short but

    amazing period of time.

Furthermore, I have also represented NTU as

a student delegate in the Ministry of Education

Sino-Singapore exchange in China for two

weeks. These overseas exchangesare denitely the highlights of my

undergraduate life in NTU as I wasable to live independently and most

    importantly, broaden my mind and

attain a global perspective throughmy many newly made international friends.

    STUDENTS LIFE FACULTY

    KNOWLEDGE and EXPERIENCE

    BEYOND theCLASSROOM

MSE feels like one big family. Theschool is constantly trying to reach outand connect with the students, creating

a student-centric environment whereprofessors are always ready to

look out for students well-being academically, nancially and

emotionally. The school also focuses onproviding us with a conducive environment for

learning, with our very own e-learning studio

and computer lab with printing facilities.

The various programmes organised by the

school have also benetted me tremendously.

The schools Leadership ExcellenceProgramme was particularly helpful

in my growth as a student, helping

me to develop my leadership skillsfurther and prepare myself to work

better in a team. Also, being part ofthe committee of the MSE Club and working

under the schools Work Study Scheme has

taught me better time management skills as

I had to juggle CCA duties with work and

    academic study.

Overall, the experiences I have gained in NTU

MSE have been very enriching and fullling.

Im sure that you can have an enriching

journey duri ng your undergraduate studies at

    NTU, too!

I did my Industrial Attachment (IA) inExxonMobil for 6 months, in the departmentof Inspection. The department is responsible

for maintaining and improving the reliability of

all the equipment and piping by planning and

and executing a good inspection programme.

The knowledge on mater ials failu re and

failure analysis, as well as the properties

of some basic engineering materials are

necessary for this job, and almost 80% of

the engineers in this department have a

    Materials Engineering degree.

I must say that I have had a very

enriching journey during my IA, asIve met a lot of nice seniors and

    colleagues who have been very

willing to share their knowledge andexperience with me. Something I

took away from this IA was to beclearer on the overall picture of

the industry and job as an inspectionengineer. I have also gained more technical

    knowledge through encountering real life

    engineering problems and applications.

Lastly, I have also improved my soft skills in

    terms of communication, time management

and work planning during these 6 months.

    Unleashing

    YOUR POTENTIAL

    MSE-PROFESSORS

Assistant Professor Ali Miserez is emphatic

that engineering need not be boring and

a great deal of interesting work is always

being carried out in MSE. His area of

    expertise is biological and biomimetic

materials, which looks at the way nature

works, and uses them as models for

engineering. His latest research found that

a tiny marine animal, the mantis shrimp,

has a unique woven-structure in their

club-like arms which is tougher than

many man-made ceramics. This gave clue

    to producing tougher medical implants.

Move like the wind. Boundaries are made to be surpassed, so go

further than your comfort zone and take your future by its reins. Let us

impart to you the knowledge that you need to be your own leader.

An alumnus of MSE, Associate Professor

Joachim Loos expertise lies in the eld

    of biomaterials and nanomaterials. His

    more recent work on nanotoxicology,

studying the properties of materials on

the nano scale, was featured prominently

in The Straits Times. In addition to being

    a well-regarded researcher, he is also a

personable educator who is well-liked by

his students. This is evident in 2011, when

he won the Teaching Excellence Award

and was voted as the Teacher of the Year

    in 2012.

    to you, and that

    learning with us

    so gratifying.

    CARVINGYOUR

    NICHEIN LIFE

Upon graduation, I worked as aMaterials Engineer in Advanpack Solutions, where I spearheaded many cutting-edge

projects, such as the electronic packaging

    materials development programme for Intel

Corporation. It was in this role that I developed

a strong interest in entrepreneurship. I

decided to pursue this passion and so

founded Hydroemission Corp in 2003. Within

a few years, the companys technology

    gained relevant market appreciation and

is now a global player, offering innovative

    products worldwide.

My biggest take away fromNTU and MSE, besides the

    comprehensive technical training,

was the education and trainingthat gave me the strength to

follow my passion. Studying theredeveloped my ability to solve

problems creatively. Learning toovercome all the hardships, failures and

    GRAcEcwyXClass of 2000

mistakes was what shaped me to become

the successful entrepreneur I am today.

I keep in close touch with my

Professors in MSE, and often comeback to the school to exchange

    technical knowledge and ndings

with like-minded individuals. It notonly helps me in my business, but

also helps the School to maintain

strong ties with industry. This closebond with my peers and professors is

another valuable take-away from my time in

NTU. Guided by passionate professors, your

time here will be most fullling if you match

    their passion in your studies.

This four year programme has helpedme to better understand and appreciate thethings that are happening around us in the

eld of science and technology. Studyingthe basics of materials and their

applications has cultivated in mea greater appreciation for the

amount of work that has gone intogiving us the world of today, with all

    its conveniences.

Materials engineering focuses on the study

of the behaviour of materials. It is important

    to understand how different materials

    properties change under different conditions.

This programme has equipped me with the

knowledge to make careful considerations in

material usage in my current work.

Studying in NTU MSE wasone of the best decisions that Ihave ever made. The four yearsof my undergraduate life has really

    shaped me both academically

and personally.Academically, I had theopportunities to participate in undergraduate

    research (URECA), overseas exposure

    programmes (summer programme in Berlin),

intern at a prestigious company (Philips)and various competitions. Nevertheless,

education in NTU MSE was not just

about academic excellence. I had the

chance to be involved in various leadership

    and management roles in co-curricular

Personally, analytical skills and learningto pay attention to details are the most

important things that Ive taken away from

this programme. Apart from the driven

    but rewarding academic studies,

the School of Materials Scienceand Engineering building has a very

    beautiful E-space, which allows

students like myself to study, havea free cup of coffee and relax by

playing board games. Such anenvironment allows us to not only

work hard but also be well-rested.Thank you MSE!

activities such as the MSE club and NTU

    Astronomical Soc iety.

Through the peer-tutoring scheme, I also

    picked up valuable teaching experiences

where I got the opportunity to share my

    knowledge about a particular subject

with some of my juniors in school. With all

those activities, I have improved a lot interms of public speaking and other forms of

    communication skills.

All in all, I found myself to be in the right

place and the right time at NTU MSE!
