2011 KALAYAAN CUP, A huge success, Jesena and Herosa – Masters ChampionBy UFTBR News Team

Judging from the number of participants (33 teams) and the number of sponsors and the huge turnout of supporters and friends, the 2011 Kalayaan Cup which was organized jointly by UFTBR and the Filipino Bowlers Group of Riyadh (FBGR) was a resounding success. The event was held at the Universal Bowling Center (UBC) last June 8 to 10.Arnold Jesena and Cheng Herosa emerged as Champions in the Masters Event. Jesena came from behind and topped the Masters elimination round by just 1 pin over UFTBR Chairman himself, Ernee Noto and eventually won by beating surprise finalist Jau Urbano (first runner-up). The other winners in the men’s Master Event were Ernee Noto (second runner-up), Ricky Talde (third runner-up) and Mike Ecalnir (fourth runner up). Cheng Herosa on the other hand ruled the elimination round comfortably but struggled in the finals against veteran Lanie Dela Cruz who beat Herosa in the first game of the “twice to beat” format. The second game was a classi=c thriller, with Lanie needing a pair of strikes in the last frame to edge Herosa. Lanie had a strike on her first roll but failed to deliver on her next crucial shot. The other winner in the Masters Event was Beybs Serafico (second runner-up).The new oil pattern used for the event wrecked havoc on the lanes in the opening day (Team Event) with veterans and top rated bowlers struggling to find their sweet spots. The team Unica Uno composed of elite bowlers Andro Tismo, Ronald Bautista, Edwin Atienza and Art Yukong eventually won via a high-scoring fourth game. Other team event winners were IBG Strike Eagles 1 (Arnold Jesena, Jun Bantug, Atoi Ramos, Jove Marano), Blue Blood (Shakur Kamlian,

Gerry Damiray, Joel Batolina, Romy Repia), Team Unity/Vita Plus (Ernee Noto, Jerry Austria, Beybs Serafico, Princess Tabago) and Unica Tres (Zaldy Torres, Jess Ambon, Manny Lebrilla, Ely Fanugao) - second, third, fourth and fifth respectively. The Doubles Event Male Division trophy again went to Unica Uno (Andro Tismo and Edwin Atienza), followed by the tandem of Cheng Herosa and Joel Lambo (Joshua’s Lane Master) and the pair of Lani Dela Cruz and Beth Danganan of IBG Queens of Aces. Noel Marquez (IBG Supremos) captured the Male Singles Event crown followed by Shakur Kamlian and Danny Nabong (NADEC), while the ladies Singles Event champ was again Cheng Herosa followed by Vicky Vitug (IBG Amazons) and Beybs Serafico. The “All Events” winners for the male division were Andro Tismo (Champion) followed by Ronald Bautista and Zaldy Torres while the winners for the female group were Cheng Herosa (first place) followed by Beybs Serafico and Vicky Vitug. Cash prizes, blackberry phones (from Mobily) and Flat Screen TV’s (from Sanyo Saudi Arabia) were given out to the winners in addition to the trophies and medals. The Kalayaan Cup is an annual bowling event held in celebration of the Philippine Independence Day. The theme for this year’s event is “Unity and Friendship”, a fitting tribute not only to the continuous collaboration between UFTBR and FBGR in organizing big bowling events but to the newly found fervor and aura of unity which was felt by everyone during the event. Mr. Rousel Reyes,

Vice Consul of Philippine Embassy graced the event’s opening and closing/awarding ceremonies. In his inspirational message, Mr. Reyes commended UFTBR for the unity it has achieved and further emphasized that more than the prizes and the glitter is the unity friendship and camaraderie that have been developed among bowlers.UFTBR/FBGR would like to thank the sponsors of the event – Sanyo Saudi Arabia, Mobily & Safari Telecom, Pro Shop, McDonalds, House of Donuts, Art Yukong, Armin Isles, Beybz Serafico, Jerry Austria, Cristy Jesena, Talal Mohammad, Julius Alfonso, Boy Mirando, Jojo Gabriel and Fathi Abdulaziz; and all the participants and team sponsors - Abdulrazzak Abdullah (IBG with 11 teams), Armin Isles (Unica, 3 teams), House of Donuts (2 teams), JRA Outliners, Team Unity/Vita Plus, Brooklyn Strikers, R&B Roll & Bowl, Bowlfriends, Snake Bowlers, BLMJ, Green Rose, Fathi’s Team, Astro Bowlers, Brainstormers, JBR, NADEC, Fantastic 4, Joshua’s Lane Master, Blue Blood and Bahala Na. UFTBR/FBGR Unification in the worksBy UFTBR News Team

There’s a saying “you can never put a good man down”. From this context, we can also come up with a similar cliché like “we can never give up on a good intention”. Last year’s unification of three bowling group under UFTBR was a heartwarming news (even a tearjerker to those of us who have been here for quite awhile). It was a milestone; a realization of the dreams and aspirations of many Riyadh bowlers, ushering in a new era in Riyadh’s bowling circuit. All the while, FBGR watched the unfolding events cautiously from the sidelines with most of its members quietly hoping that somehow it would finally include all groups. In one gathering, Jerry Austria (FBGR Chairman) mentioned that at that time when he heard that Ernee Noto has been unanimously voted to head the revitalized UFTBR, he immediately thought that maybe the right time has come for genuine unification, FBGR included.UFTBR and FBGR have collaborated in many successful bowling activities in the past. As many bowlers have witnessed,

it was always a welcome sign, it kept the fire of unity alive. But then as soon as the excitement of the bowling event dissipates, the momentum for unity was always side tracked. Total unification beyond cooperation and collaboration in holding big bowling events were merely whispered. The 2011 Kalayaan Cup with it’s theme “unity and friendship” was a little different. From the onset, it was decided as a joint UFTBR/FBGR project and Jerry Austria and some FBGR members attended the very first meeting to discuss the framework for the event. Unknown to most of us, the several meetings and planning sessions for the event went beyond cooperation and collaboration. On these occasions committee members of the planning group were feeling something different - the warmth of genuine friendship and the comfort of really being united. Whatever remaining barriers or hesitations among UFTBR and FBGR officers practically evaporated and formal unification was openly discussed. In one session, Ernee Noto took the initiative and proposed to Jerry Austria to be a part of UFTBR’s rooster of officer as an Adviser, which was immediately accepted by Jerry. The success of the 2011 Kalayaan

Cup was a solid proof that unity and friendship has finally taken its roots. During the thanksgiving dinner hosted by Art Yukong for all those who were involved in organizing the event, Cesar De Mesa the Event Chairman was almost close to tears in his short thanksgiving speech. Cesar remarked that for the first time after being part of the organizer of so many bowling events in Riyadh, he has witnessed real cooperation. Cesar further quipped that it was more than amazing to see members of the different committees just working together without hesitation, regardless of rank, assignment or designation. Everyone was ready to take the initiative, give support and do whatever task at hand, it was indeed a sight to behold. Ernee and Jerry were quick in affirming Cesar’s observation and both declared that this time the work on final unification must continue. Jerry added that he doesn’t see any problem with FBGR ultimately unifying under UFTBR. He just needs to formalize it with his group, wind up on-going activities and draw out the framework for the merger and union. Ernee of course readily reciprocated by saying that anytime, FBGR is welcome to the folds of UFTBR.

GCC EVENT PREPARATION In full swingBy UFTBR News Team

This year’s preparation for the GCC bowling event to be held in September 12- 16 is completely different from past efforts in almost all aspects. The main driving force and motivation may be the strong desire to excel this time and rebound from the dismal showing of UFTBR’s contingent in last year’s event held in Qatar. But there is very little doubt that the initiatives and efforts led by Armin Isles and Art Yukong have raised this year’s GCC preparation to a new level. Ernee Noto and Vic Barrazona both recalled that after last year’s games, they had challenged potential leaders of UFTBR to start making a name for themselves, start taking the cudgels of leadership. They specifically dared Armin and Art to handle the fund raising for the GCC Event and both responded with a “do or die” attitude and commitment. As early as December 2010, fund raising for the next GCC event steamrolled with the sole objective of raising enough funds to cover all costs for our delegates so they can be motivated and give their best to bring back the glory to the Riyadh bowling community. Art Yukong was instrumental in convincing Sanyo Electronics to provide full support to the fund raising campaign by making available an array of Sanyo Products (television, microwave ovens, grills, vacuum cleaners, etc.) as prizes for all special fund raising games. So far (as of July 10) a total of 24 special fund raising games have been held and the number of participants was always beyond targets, unprecedented in UFTBR history. Who would not be enticed to win a 40” Sanyo LCD TV in a “No Tap” game where Class C and B and even lady bowlers were given equal chances to slug it out with rated players.

Armin was very happy to report that we have almost achieved our fund raising target as of end of June 2011 with plenty of time to spare until the GCC event schedule. Ernee is set to finalize the composition of the GCC Task Force to supplement those who have been earlier appointed in the work group (Armin, Art, Vic Barrazona, Pat Nave, Beybs Serafico and Dennis Durens). Armin has also been chosen as the Head of UFTBR’s delegation. After a two-phase 12-game series of qualifying challenge, held last July 1 and 7, UFTBR has finally selected the members of the 5-team Riyadh contingent, namely:

All the players above are now in the player pool. The GCC Task Force will decide on the distribution and allocation of the players to the 3 men’s team and 2 ladies’ team which will represent Riyadh. The qualifying games were tough to say the least but bowlers who participated were more than satisfied. The invitation was extended to all bowlers regardless of classification and many were totally surprised and delighted saying it was the first time that the qualifying games were done in this manner. More than 80 bowlers came and try their mettle but most just came to play and feel the thrill. Above all, it was really fun and everyone enjoyed the games. Credit for the successful qualifying games of course goes to the GCC Task Force with the support of Bong Solomon, Pau Feria and many more who were always ready to extend a helping hand. At this point, the GCC Task Force is fully confident that the preparation efforts would turn to gold; we have the funds and the results of the qualifying games clearly show that we could form a very competitive team. UFTBR would like to thank everyone who continuously supported the fund raising drive and of course a million thanks to “SANYO” for all the prizes it has provided for the fund raising games.

We may be contented savoring the newly found bonding and seamless blending of fun and sports but we do have an obligation to make a name for our community. Greetings to all Filipino Bowlers of Riyadh and congratulations to the officers and editorial team of UFTBR. Your continuous efforts to communicate and reach out to your members through your newsletter is indeed an exemplary and extraordinary endeavor. As a bowling enthusiast, we often lost track of those little things that really makes bowling fun and enjoyable. We all know that a lot of things happen during every game; the friendship, the gracious jokes, the sense of belonging and the cheerful ambience, all these makes our sports very unique and distinct. It is always enjoyable and inspiring to play with Filipino bowlers who have such an unrelenting passion for the game day in and day out. Having a regular publication and newsletter will ensure that your feats and friendship in the bowling lanes and beyond are shared and the fond memories preserved for a very long time.I do hope you will continue on this type of undertaking and to stand out in the various programs and activities you are doing on behalf of your organization. My special congratulations also to UFTBR Chairman, Mr. Ernee Noto for a job well done. More power to all of you.Sincerely,

What Are The Health Benefits of Bowling?By Lulu Quehada

Many people never understood that they may achieve fitness just from bowling. When it comes to one’s personal health, bowling might be given a great consideration, particularly for people who bowl regularly.Bowling is known to be a very flexible sport. Many people have not become aware of that until they have experienced it. It is a good form of relaxation and is a good way to reduce unwanted stress in your life. Bowling may also act as a stimulus. It helps people with exercising, and helps promote good exercising on the legs. Bowling can be compared to walking, except bowling adds a little extra weight to the legs. Many people have no clue that bowling enables you to definitely burn body fat. Bowling involves lots of movement for example bending, twisting, and moving your arms in different directions that will help burn excess body fat. Bowling can burn between 170 to 300 calories depending on how frequently you bowl and how much you weigh. People do not appreciate the amount of movement bowling involves; it is sufficient to eliminate lots of calories. Bowling also keeps individuals social life active given that they can meet many new people during the games. People must learn to appreciate how big the health benefit bowling provides on one’s social lives. Bowling gives people the opportunity to join social associations, whether it is with family or fellow bowlers.

Building new friends benefits people who are specially suffering from emotional stress, in a substantial way. When bowling, many people often buy unhealthy meals, and drinks. This can remove all the benefits and somehow diminish the healthy facet of bowling. If people wish to achieve healthy results from bowling, one will have to eat healthy too, and must not ignore the healthy part of their diet. Going for a bottle of water or perhaps a healthy snack can help in reaping helpful benefits while bowling. Working out and a healthy diet plan should come hand in hand.Author’s Advise – Allow bowling to get you back in shape. Be proactive and indulge yourself in bowling to make you healthy and strong. Remember, as you start to roll the balls on the lanes you are burning those unwanted fats and calories out of your body.Have fun and enjoy the health benefits of bowling!

that some of the nations with the most vitamin D deficient citizens are here in the Middle East! It is so common it is almost safe to say that everyone who works in the office and even our children who cannot play outside are vitamin D deficient.Of course we know that as we age we become at risk for osteoporosis (especially women) and osteoarthritis (which in turn limits our performance). This is why vitamin D supplementation is recommended for the elderly aside from increased dietary calcium intake. But it doesn’t stop there. Vitamin D deficiency has also been observed to be a risk factor for several major diseases including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, stroke, heart diseases, and most cancers. This was based on the observation that these patients have very low vitamin D levels compared to those who are normal. Aside from that, treatment with vitamin D supplementation actually improved the condition of these patients and it is even proven to boost their immune systems. The benefits of having normal vitamin D levels are too strong to be ignored, and it is fast becoming a routine test for both children and adults in major hospitals. Eating foods rich in vitamin D, including cod liver oil may help, but the best and cheapest way to reverse vitamin D deficiency is to just expose ourselves to the sun. Early morning and the afternoon are best times for sun exposure here in Riyadh. Face, hands, or feet (without sun block lotions) for a minimum of 10-15 minutes are considered enough to meet your vitamin D requirements for the day. It is really unfortunate that despite the year round sun that we have here, so many people still suffer from vitamin D deficiency which has been linked to so many major diseases. It’s really time we start loving our sun again.

It’s too Hot and Sunny… and It’s Healthy too!by Bella B. Sabico

For most of us (if not all of us), the scorching heat of the sun here in Riyadh is really too much to bear. Hence, we always choose to either stay indoors or go out in the night. Little do we know that by avoiding the sun we also deplete one of the most important vitamins in our body --- vitamin D. Clinical scientists have shown that vitamin D functions are not limited to normal bone and calcium maintenance, it is also key to several major functions of the body. As of today, the whole world suffers from vitamin D deficiency, and what’s more surprising is

Physical Game Development – A Five-part Skill ProgressionBy Vic Barrazona

In the last issue, I presented the outline of the five-part skill progression in developing the physical game of a bowler, namely:1. Pee Wee two-handed delivery2. Staggered stance without a push away3. Staggered stance with a push away4. One-step delivery5. Four-step deliveryThe purpose of the skill progression is to first teach athletes to establish a balanced finish position at the foul line. From this balanced position, it is important that the athletes maintain balance as they deliver the ball.Pee Wee Two-handed DeliveryThe Pee Wee two-handed delivery is used by youth who are unable to hold the ball and deliver with one hand. We’ve seen kids roaming around while their parents are playing in our leagues. Some of these kids are well qualified to start learning how to bowl using the two-handed delivery. The Proper MethodIt is important that we use a method that starts our Pee Wee students on a path of building a strong foundation for delivering the ball.“Two-handed run and dump” is an alternative method which is sometimes used because it has immediate potential for the student to knock down more pins very quickly. However, this method will do very little to build or establish long-term skills required in the development of a bowler.

To establish the feeling of delivering the ball from a balanced finished position is a key part of this progression. Introducing and having the bowler use an exaggerated two-handed follow through is an important part of this progression.

Skills Taught:•Safety•How to pick up and carry a ball•Lane markings

Waist Down:•Athlete’s position is about six inches behind foul line at the center locator dot•Feet set shoulder width apart•Knees bent•Hip square – parallel to foul line

Waist Up:•Spine tilted slightly forward•Head up with eyes on target

Ball Position:•Ball is placed on the floor and positioned between the feet•Ball is positioned with holes in at 9 o’clock – 3 o’clock position facing the ceilingHand Position:•Hands are positioned behind and slightly under the ball

The Delivery:•From the starting position on the floor, the ball is pulled slightly backward•As the ball moves forward, the hand releases from the ball as it passes the ankles•The Arms continue in forward motion and end up above the head simulating a follow through motion.

Youth Bowler Unable to Hold Ball

For Pee Wee bowlers who are unable to hold and swing the ball with two hands:1.If the bowling ball is too big or too heavy for the bowlers to lift and carry, the coach or a parent should carry the ball to the foul line and lay the ball down on the approach.

2.Have the bowler place the ball on the approach six inches behind the large middle dot behind the foul line, with the ball holes facing the ceiling, as shown below. The thumb and finger holes should be positioned at 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock.

3.Make sure the bowler is standing slightly behind the ball with feet spread about shoulder width apart.

4.Have the bowler bend his/her legs at the knees.

5.Instruct the bowler to put both hands behind the ball with pinky fingers almost touching, as shown below.

6.Now have the bowler aim straight ahead towards the center arrow and give the ball a big push with his/her arms, while following through straight up overhead, as shown below.

7.Have fun watching the ball hit the pins

Youth Bowler Able to Hold and Swing Ball

Some Pee Wee bowlers will want to hold the ball with two hands and swing it, which is also acceptable for beginners.1.The starting position for this techniques is similar to the one we have just described. Have the bowler hold on the approach 6 inches behind the large middle dot behind the foul line, with the holes facing the ceiling as shown below.

2.Now have the bowler pick up the ball and stand at the foul line, positioned in the middle of the lane with legs spread apart, knees slightly bent, and spine tilted forward, as shown below.

3.Have the bowler swing the ball a little forward and then back between the legs and, as the ball comes forward again, release it as shown below.

4.The bowler should now follow through up to the ceiling with both hands as shown below.

Have the bowler use the middle arrow as a starting point for targeting and then go from there.(Source: USBC Coaching Level 1 Reference Manual)

HOUSE BALLSelected Members Profile (compiled by Bella Sabico)

Ibrahim Nave and Patma Nave:

The tandem of Ibrahim (Ibs) and Patma (Pat) is one of the better known couples in the Riyadh bowling circuit, not only because of their outstanding achievements in bowling but also for their untiring dedication in serving the bowling community.Ibs is a BSC graduate and currently working as a senior salesman in one of the known food chains in Riyadh.Patma (Pat) on the other hand is a Registered Nurse by profession and was formerly with KKUH for 23 years as Directress of Admission, the only Filipino given a top administrative position. She is a Health Care Management MA and currently she is working as a grant staff in Training and Development, at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center. The fun of throwing house ball was initially introduced to them by us (Mr and Mrs Sabico) as bowling has always been our favorite past time as a respite from the hospital environment during weekends. Obviously that first experience immediately gave them the encouragement and eventually led them to participate in bowling leagues. Soon enough, Pat›s passion in bowling gets recorded with numerous awards and achievements in the Kingdom as well as in the GCC region. She garnered 12 MVP awards, 7 elite championships, twice master champion in both Ramadan and Hajj Goodwill games, and runner-up in master event during the Ramadan Goodwill games in Alkhobar. She was one of the members of the Riyadh delegate team to GCC AFTBT which won the overall championship twice. She became an officer of FOBR for years holding various positions. She has been the Chairman of Ladies League for many years with the enhancement of skills of neophyte lady bowlers as her priority. Her leadership charisma and professionalism in dealing with bowlers was a key factor in the unification of various bowling groups in Riyadh and earned for her enough respect from fellow bowlers. She once served as a Chairperson of UFTBR. She is one of the many bowlers who served the bowling community the longest. She is most thankful to Ibs who supported her all the way since a very dedicated service would not have been possible without him.

Message from Pat & Ibs: «Our primary reason for bowling is to have fun & be with friends» / «Service is provided for free without expecting anything in return»

Mr. Casiano Encila (Cas)

Cas has been in the kingdom for 26 years working as a Technician in a well known company, Schnieder Electric Company. He is blessed with 2 children, one of whom is lucky to work and join him in the same company. His enthusiasm to play bowling started in 1990 in Riyadh Bowling Center, one of the more popular Bowling Centers in Riyadh years back. This bowling center served as the training ground for male amateur bowlers. From an ordinary bowler, Cas is now among the roster of Class A elite bowlers. Among his key achievement is winning the 2005 Ramadan Goodwill Games Master Champion held at Riyadh Intercontinental Hotel. His advice to bowlers is to exercise patience and more importantly to have fun rather than competition. Bowling for Cas has allowed him to be positive in all aspects of life, not to mention that it has been the most compelling reasons why he lasted this long in the kingdom.

Mr. Jett Cabana (Jett)

Jett is one of the most respected bowlers of the community. He has been working as a Senior Engineer at the Saudi Electric Company since 1987. He is a native of Las Pinas and maintains a peaceful married life. He is a proud father to a son currently taking up Medicine at the Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas. He has been playing and got hooked permanently to bowling for many years and will continue to play, making every game a satisfying experience despite stressful work. He is a Class A bowler, and holds multiple MVP awards. Among his contribution to the bowling community were - former Chairman of FOBR and regular participation in technical and financial committees for bowling events. For Jett, bowling has been a major source of strength and considers this sport a stronghold of his staying power. His advice to his fellow bowlers is to keep playing bowling even if results do not turn out as expected as every hit is an opportunity.

Page 11: UFTBR Pointshots Newletter, 2nd Edition

11

Mr. Eduvencio Quizon (Edu)

Edu is a native of Quezon Province and is happily married with 3 children. He is a CPA by profession and he had previously worked in Jeddah and Dammam as an Accountant. He has been employed in Riyadh since 2000 as a Financial Analyst for SABIC, one of the biggest companies in KSA. He is also an active member Financial Analyst Club Worldwide. While he is classified a Class B bowler, the sport nevertheless is purely fun for him. Yet enhancing his bowling skills remain insatiable. He is known to his colleagues as one of the more sociable players who can blend and get along well with anyone. Edu also served as an officer of FOBR and remains very supportive to the organization which he considers as his second family.

Ms. Editha Hatcha (Edith)

Edith hails from Pembo, Makati and is happily married to Mr. Proceso Gaas (Teng). She has been working as Dermatology Nurse in KKUH for almost 3 decades. Edith also has a formidable reputation in the bowling arena built from 19 solid years of bowling experience. She belongs to the roster of Elite lady bowlers, thanks to her strong striking abilities. She consistently earns a spot in most elite league competitions. According to her, although bowling runs in the family, it was her flat mate Ms. Mathi Punzalan, one of the legendary figures in the bowling community who inspired her to play. Her first love is dancing but her true love is bowling. She has also experienced being a delegate in international competitions. While so many unforgettable memories and achievements mark her sterling and long bowling stint, she considers meeting Teng in the bowling center as the «best thing» that ever happened to her. This makes her undying passion and enthusiasm to the sport doubly meaningful.

Joselito «Fykes» Serafico

Fykes is new in the sport, he was part of the 2nd batch of neophyte bowlers in in UFTBR’s training programs. He is married to Brenda «Beybz» Serafico and they have four children.Fykes is currently connected with Alsalam Aircraft Company as Technical Instructor on Aircraft Airframe and Powerplant. Though he plays bowling occasionally, he never fails to provide support to her daughter Alyssa and his wife when they play their scheduled games in various leagues. But with his interest to improve his game growing, he plans to play more often and join more leagues in the future. Fykes added that joining various bowling activities initiated by the UFTBR and FBGR has enabled him to make a number of acquaintances and gain more friends in the process. He is happy to say that being friends with bowlers regardless of their skills and class makes bowling already worthwhile, of course there is always that opportunity of brushing elbows and meeting international players from time to time. As my wife loves bowling (next to me I think), my being around to assist and/or cheer when she plays adds especial bonding moments to our relationship. Also, bowling breaks the monotony of life in Riyadh especially for my wife and kids who can›t travel around freely without me. He further said that although bowling is costly, it›s really rewarding, the thrill of rolling that bowling ball and hitting a strike or just simply having fun and enjoying the camaraderie with fellow bowlers.

BACK ENDMembers Opinion/Suggestions

Good day everyone! It feels so good to share what I have in mind and my experiences as well in bowling. It all started with a simple curiosity and a clamor for fun and enjoyment. Along with my friends and colleagues, I remember playing bowling when I was still a neophyte in Saudi Arabia, having stayed for a year or two. I can say that my passion increased to my surprise. Not only that I was able to gain awards and prizes but was able to gain more friends thru this sport. Indeed, I came to love it aside from being my source of relaxation. For those who aspire to have a name in this field all I can say is just focus on those which you really like doing like for instance if you feel you enjoy bowling, badminton, basketball, swimming or any other sports to name a few, concentrate

and set your goals on it. Of course, winning is not really the gauge of being an exemplary player but what matters most is that how one accepts losing and that is what sportsmanship is all about. RJ, my one and only son have proven much in this sports and I believe I had given him some inspiration and the will to pursue and prove that he can excel with perseverance and patience. Nothing can be achieved in a quick span of time without much sacrifice. This is just a matter of setting your priorities and goals in life, believing in your abilities and most of all praying and asking for God’s guidance all the time. I am definitely sure that with this, one can never go wrong. Thank you and happy bowling to all. Cheers!Rico Feria

“Where do we go from here?” Applying different oil patterns is good and bad: good for bowlers who see it as a challenge and wish to be better players; bad for beginners who see it as a stumbling block to their quest to learn the craft.I am referring to beginners who are learning the basics of scientific bowling. I just feel it’s so confusing to them at this early stage.JR Raymundo

Thanks sa oppurtunity and kung may correction ikaw na ang bahala. «UFTBR Chairman Mr.Ernee Noto and well respected persons and organizers of UFTBR MABUHAY, kayong lahat naibalik ninyo ang tunay na kahulugan ng UFTBR and that is UNITY! you guy›s don›t need to win every medal to be succesful. MALAYO ang mararating natin dahil naipakita ninyo na karapat dapat kayo sa inyong mga tungkulin keep it up!!!!! Joe Garrido

When I was asked to write for this “Pointshot” newsletter, another valuable activity of UFTBR, I didn’t know what to say or write. But I was thrilled and honored by the fact that I was picked to share my experience and views based on the question «Where do we go from here?» as basis of my story-telling. Hmmmm...let me give it a try. Frankly speaking, never in my wildest dream that I will go beyond from what I expected since I was involved in bowling. For me, I just wanted to learn how to bowl and that›s it! However, as I got deep with this sport, I was surprised to know that many Filipinos have started to like and be concerned about me and it really touch my heart knowing that I am a Saudi national. Apart from this, I can’t explain the kind of camaraderie and unity I was seeing. That is why, whenever I am in the bowling center, whether playing for my team or simply sitting while observing others play their best form, I feel that I am HOME. I think this is the best viewpoint that I can share from this newsletter. I believe that we should go on eliminating our differences, for what it’s worth, and continue to build positive atmosphere amongst ourselves, bowlers (irrespective of classifications, expertise and technical know-how in this sport) as it will give so much joy and happiness apart from providing us temporary relief from our personal problems, work related issues and other concerns that causes our worries, anxieties and depression. Bowling is fun so let us continue to make it happen even if it is just for a while! Let us get away from our negative thoughts, characteristics, and embrace optimism in life through bowling, learn how to help one another and put aside our cultural differences. Finally, I would like to thank UFTBR for giving me this opportunity to contribute in this wonderful newsletter. I hope and pray that the leadership of this group will do the best to address the needs of its members and continue to gather their strength, patience and love for this organization so as to provide more fun and exciting games, create a friendly environment and most especially showcase good leadership.Yours truly, Bandar Al-Marshad

I am ok with the direction that UFTBR is taking pero may I suggest kung pwede sana na magtabi kahit konting amount ang UFTBR out of the share sa mga liga, fun games, etc. para naman sa isang social event/party (sa isang malaking estiraha), para lalong lumalim ang bonding and friendship ng mga bowlers.Ric Ventura

Danny «Thong»

YOUTH INVADERS

UFTBR’s bowling training program for beginners has produced quite a number of bowlers (especially lady bowlers) who are now regular competitive league players. The on-going batch of trainees may be one for the history books or for the fairy tales. The youths have invaded the bowling lanes and our trainers (Vic Barrazona, Ernee Noto and Celis Viloria) can sense a lot of potentials in them which with continuous training and mentoring would yield great benefits in the future. Don’t let their youthful smiles and playfulness deceive you. One of them, RB is now a monthly champion. In one of the games of the ongoing Friday Ladies League, Ysmael Viloria slugged it out, toe to toe with one of our Rated Class A Player, winning a very close game handicap points excluded.Watch out for the following bowlers:

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT BOWLINGBy Ian Choco

Before we go any further in trying to excel and continuously improve in our most loved sport, let us first learn a few facts about BOWLING. Below are some facts, maybe known to most of us but worth sharing with others to understand better how bowling came about and is played.

One of the many sports activities that is played both as a professional sport and also as a recreational activity is Bowling. But what really is bowling?Bowling is a game in which a heavy ball is rolled down a long narrow lane to knock down a group of 10 wooden objects, called as pins. This game is not a new invention of the 20th century. Traces of this game can be found in historical records as old as 16th century. The game, which is quite popular in the United States, according to historical evidence, was brought from the Dutch people to the country in the 17th century and gained immense popularity among the people. The popularity was such that it occasionally led to betting and had to be banned for this very reason many a times in the past in many states across the U.S.The game regained its popularity since the beginning of the 20th century, and in the year 1958, this game has been declared as a professional sports, as well. The primary goal or aim of the game is to knock down the wooden objects or pins from a distance, using the heavy ball. The rules and scoring system in this game are very simple. If all the pins are knocked down in the first throw, then it is called a STRIKE, and 10 pins are awarded for a strike. If some of the 10 pins stand remaining in the game at the end of the first throw, the ball is thrown for the second time to knock down the balance pins. When the balance pins are knocked down with the second ball, then it is called SPARE, and another 10 points are awarded for the spare. If a strike is thrown in a frame, the number of pins knocked down by the next two balls bowled count in that game. Thus, the maximum points a player can score in a single frame is thirty (30).Both professionally and as an amateur, a typical game of bowling comprises of 10 frames. Each player is allowed to deliver two balls per frame. In the last frame of the game or in the 10th frame, the player is allowed another two balls. A perfect score of 300 in a game can be achieved by having 12 strikes in a row.More to follow next issue……..

BOWLING FOR PLEASUREBY Melvin Alfonso

Quezon City, Philippines – My father, Al Alfonso, spent just two weeks in the Philippines and immediately left with my mother to the US of A. I opened my email and lo and behold! The message- “Phen, write an article about bowling.” I know my father and mother, they would not take “no” especially from a “bunso” like me. I said “yes” and my mind raced to what little I know about bowling during my short stint working in Saudi Arabia. Presently working night shift in a call center based in Makati, Metro Manila, coming from Novaliches, Quezon City, I am on the road to and from work about four hours a day. That leaves me only a couple of hours between working and waking, just enough time to eat and get ready to leave for work again. I gave up one of my two precious weekend days

off to write my thoughts as a novice bowler.I took a semester of bowling lessons in physical education (PE) during my college days at UP. The bowling balls then were smaller with no finger holes in them. You hold the ball in the palm of your hand and roll it away. When I was in Riyadh in 2004, I bowled at the tenpin bowling for the first time in my life. The PICPA-Riyadh Toastmasters Club (PRTC) organized a one-day bowling tournament at the Intercontinental Hotel Bowling Alley. Bowling balls were on the rack, and available for players like me who do not have my own. I tried my fingers in several finger holes until I found a ball that seemed to fit my hands and fingers too. Bowling shoes were also available at the counter for a fee. I asked for my shoe size and found myself rattling around in a strange pairs of bowling shoes half-size too large. Nonetheless, I won a trophy for “The Most Enthusiastic Player” (if you know what that means). Maybe the organizers took my facial expressions as a strike throughout the tournament. I was perplexed but encouraged nonetheless since tenpin bowling is much easier to play than duckpin because the bowling balls and pins are much bigger. From then on I bowled with my father whenever possible. Bowling proved to me to be a healthy and pleasurable exercise. Looking back, I can only say, “thanks to my guitar and bowling, I survived my two years contract.” Bowling is a cool sport. The accessories that goes with the game are not only useful but looks good and hip on the players - Gloves, wrist protectors, sports shirts, jogging pants or short pants. Come as you are. You can wear your favorite blue jeans when playing. It doesn’t matter, as long as you’re comfortable. You even have the right to wear a sando (sleeveless shirt) with your purontong shorts if you have the body contour of a model to display. Bowling is a healthy way to unwind. If you are overweight, play more games and the sport can be strenuous enough to help you slim down. If you are thin and would like to get little muscular and have some bulges, the sport too can get you back to your ideal weight. I’ve rarely seen good bowlers, especially at the professional level, who don’t have good figures. Bowling is also good for the mind. It is a good way to reduce your stress levels. It helps develop your concentration and focus. After a bowling session, when you return for work the next day, you feel rejuvenated and ready to perform well on your tasks. In Riyadh, “bowl a game or two” is much better than just staying home on your free day, eating and being a couch potato in front of the television. Bowling is a fun way to socialize and interact, both with fellow bowlers and bowling aficionados alike. There is lots of time to chat with friends while waiting for your turn to play. You can enjoy light snacks at the sitting or dining area. You can have soft drinks, coffee or energy drink to help you keep alert and into the game. It’s also a good time for you to evaluate your games and to analyze why you could not get a strike or failed to convert a spare. It keeps you from worrying about getting a good score on the next launch of your ball or keeps you

on thinking and planning about your next turn. At least from my own experience and those fellow bowlers I’ve played with back there in Riyadh, being more spontaneous is an effective technique. But the strategy really varies and you should have something that suits your style of play. Bowling is a non-combative, non-contact, wholesome sport. Good for the family. Consistent with your religious beliefs, in case you happen to be the peaceable type. It’s more of a mind game and a psychological warfare with or against your bowling competitors. If you really want to win in a bowling tournament, you really have to put your heart and mind into the game. Of course there’s always the element of luck, and many good players can’t get their games going when they’re not having a good day. Back home, I used to play double with my younger sister, Joharah against my mom and elder brother, Julius. At least twice a month after payday, we bowl at the nearby SM Fairview bowling lanes. Bowling is rather expensive but the pleasure you can get is worth every penny you spend. My father always says, “Work, play, and rest are three wholesome activities man must learn to live in balance in order to have a complete and satisfying life.” Why companies would fix their working time to eight hours only? Probably because working beyond that the capacity to produce diminished. Medical research shows that a human body needs rest at least eight hours of sleep. In between is the time to play, the time to recreate physically, mentally and spiritually. Life does not revolve with work [and sleep] alone, otherwise it will inevitably result in a burnout. When this happens, we become psychologically dysfunctional. In this negative mental state we become inefficient or ineffective at whatever we do and attempt to undertake. Whenever I feel the symptoms of stress and tension, I take time to unwind and play bowling for pleasure.
