About the Program This course will explore the African
American presence in Paris. Students will receive information about three groups of
Black Americans who have traveled to Paris that include political persons, academics, and culture bearers. We will visit several
historic sites in Paris where these individuals lived and worked.
About the Location The city of Paris has been referred to as
the “City of Light” because of its beauty and culture, but for many African Americans it
was the “City of Refuge.” Many black artists, writers, entertainers, and others moved from the U.S. to Paris as a way to escape blatant
legalized American segregation.
Excursions You will take a tour of the Chateau des Milandes (Josephine Baker’s Chateau),
Anna Julia Cooper’s flat, and the Assemblée Nationale (Parliament of Paris), Eiffel Tower, the Sorbonne University and the Latin Quarter, the Black Art exhibits at the Louvre, and the first African American
community in Paris in the Montmartre district. We will also participate in the
Josephine Baker Tour in Le Vésinet, the James Baldwin in Paris tour, and take a
Cruise of River Seine.
HousingYou will reside in a hotel in Paris near
many of the most significant tourist sites such as the Champs Elysees, Eiffel
Tower, and the Louvre.
