Course Information College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Department of African American Studies and Political Science Course is taught by UF faculty for 2 credits. (Opportunity to receive an additional independent study credit if a research paper is completed) AFA 4905: African Americans in Paris Course is taught in English. About the Program This course will explore the African American presence in Paris. Students will receive information about three groups of Black Americans who have traveled to Paris that include political persons, academics, and culture bearers. We will visit several historic sites in Paris where these individuals lived and worked. About the Location The city of Paris has been referred to as the “City of Light” because of its beauty and culture, but for many African Americans it was the “City of Refuge.” Many black artists, writers, entertainers, and others moved from the U.S. to Paris as a way to escape blatant legalized American segregation. Excursions You will take a tour of the Chateau des Milandes (Josephine Baker’s Chateau), Anna Julia Cooper’s flat, and the Assemblée Nationale (Parliament of Paris), Eiffel Tower, the Sorbonne University and the Latin Quarter, the Black Art exhibits at the Louvre, and the first African American community in Paris in the Montmartre district. We will also participate in the Josephine Baker Tour in Le Vésinet, the James Baldwin in Paris tour, and take a Cruise of River Seine. Housing You will reside in a hotel in Paris near many of the most significant tourist sites such as the Champs Elysees, Eiffel Tower, and the Louvre.

A $300 nonrefundable deposit

toward the total cost of the program is due at the time of application. The remaining

fees are due no later than 45 days prior to departure.

If you receive financial aid, you can defer payment until it

disburses.

What’s Not Included: meals, transportation, books,

additional personal travel, and personal expenses.
