Ukraine supplied several players to Soviet Union sides competing at the FIFA World Cup and UEFA EuropeanChampionship, notably in the late 1980s when legendary coach Valeriy Lobanovskiy was in charge. Sinceindependence the country has challenged consistently for major tournaments but qualified only once, when OlehBlokhin led an Andriy Shevchenko-inspired side not just to the 2006 World Cup but onwards to the quarter-finals.Ukraine's EURO duck was broken when they co-hosted the 2012 finals, but despite Blokhin's return a win againstSweden was followed by defeats by France and England and a group stage exit.

Ukraine was a prolific resource for the Soviet Union team that won the inaugural UEFA European Championship in1960 and finished runners-up three times: losing to Spain (1964), West Germany (1972) and the Netherlands (1988).Ukraine have never qualified as an independent nation, but came within 12 minutes of reaching UEFA EURO 2000.Denied an automatic spot after a last-day draw in Russia, they were heading through on away goals in the play-offsbefore Miran Pavlin gave Slovenia a 3-2 aggregate win.

They had to wait until 2012 for their first appearance, qualifying as co-hosts with Poland. Blokhin's side enjoyed adream finals debut, Shevchenko rolling back the years and raising the roof of Kyiv's NSK Olimpiyskyi with twopredatory headers as Ukraine came from behind to beat Sweden 2-1. It was as good as it got as they went down 2-0against France and 1-0 to England to bow out.

Memorable EURO matches11/06/2012: Ukraine 2-1 Sweden, UEFA EURO 2012 group stageThe last two goals of Shevchenko's career provided an electric start for the finals co-hosts.

09/10/1999: Russia 1-1 Ukraine, UEFA EURO 2000 qualifyingShevchenko's clever free-kick earned a point away to their fierce rivals.

27/03/1999: France 0-0 Ukraine, UEFA EURO 2000 qualifyingUkraine laid down a marker against the world champions and eventual EURO winners.

Did you know?Ukrainian players made up 12 of Valeriy Lobanovskiy's 20-strong Soviet Union party, built upon the coach's own FCDynamo Kyiv selection, that lost the 1988 final to the Netherlands.

The only FIFA World Cup host nation to be defeated in the final, Sweden have never matched their run of 1958, butdid make the last four in the only other tournament they have staged, EURO '92, the first time they had competed onthat stage in the continental competition. They took bronze at the 1994 World Cup and although they have failed toqualify for the last two editions of the global finals, despite the elaborate gifts of star striker Zlatan Ibrahimović, theyhave reached the last four UEFA European Championships.

Sweden reached the semi-finals on home turf in 1992, beating eventual champions Denmark and England after anopening-day draw with France. However, with Stefan Schwarz suspended and Jonas Thern playing through injury, they were overwhelmed by Germany even if a last-minute effort made it 3-2.

It was not until 2000 that they successfully negotiated qualifying to reach the final tournament, yet the Blågult havebeen ever-presents since. Sweden exited UEFA EURO 2004 unbeaten, losing 5-4 on penalties to the Netherlands inthe quarter-finals after a goalless draw, while their last two campaigns ended at the first hurdle, a win and two defeatsnot enough each time. In 2012 they lost to Ukraine and England despite having led both matches in the second half, and were already out before their last game when Ibrahimović's brilliant acrobatic goal set up a 2-0 win againstFrance.

Memorable EURO matches07/10/2006: Sweden 2-0 Spain, UEFA EURO 2008 qualifyingGoals from Johan Elmander and Marcus Allbäck earned a win as important as it was impressive.

Once giants of European and world football, finishing runners-up in the FIFA World Cups of 1938 and 1954 andclaiming three Olympic titles, Hungary have failed to qualify for a major tournament since the 1986 World Cup. Thegolden age of Ferenc Puskás, József Bozsik, Sándor Kocsis and the rest of the Mighty Magyars, who reignedsupreme in the 1950s, is a distant memory; Hungary finished third and fourth respectively in the UEFA EuropeanChampionships of 1964 and 1972 but have not featured since.

Flórián Albert inspired Hungary as they finished third in 1964 and fourth in 1972. In 1964 they overcame Wales, EastGermany and France before suffering a 2-1 extra-time semi-final defeat by Spain. Three days later Hungary prevailed3-1 in extra time in the third-place play-off with Denmark, Dezső Novák scoring twice. In 1972 they overcameRomania in a quarter-final replay, but a late penalty miss by Sándor Zámbó confirmed defeat against the USSR andthis time the third-place play-off ended in a 2-1 reverse to hosts Belgium.

Hungary's next ten qualifying campaigns were unsuccessful, though under Sándor Egervári they finished a creditablethird behind the Netherlands and Sweden in their UEFA EURO 2012 section. The highlight came in the home fixtureagainst Sweden when Gergely Rudolf's 90th-minute goal earned a 2-1 victory. It was Hungary's first competitive winagainst a team above them in the FIFA world rankings this century.

Memorable EURO matches08/10/2010: Hungary 8-0 San Marino, UEFA EURO 2012 qualifyingA hat-trick from Ádám Szalai helped propel Hungary to their biggest EURO win.

17/05/1972: Hungary 2-1 Romania, 1972 UEFA European Championship quarter-final replayHungary sealed a semi-final spot in Belgrade after home and away draws with Romania.

25/04/1964: France 1-3 Hungary, 1964 UEFA European Championship quarter-finalsA comprehensive win in Paris set up Hungary perfectly for the home leg in Budapest.

Did you know?Hungary's home stadium is named after their most celebrated player, Ferenc Puskás; the press outside Hungarynicknamed the forward 'The Galloping Major' since, like all his Budapest Honvéd FC club-mates, he was technically asoldier.

Denmark boast a proud UEFA European Championship record. Since qualifying for the 1984 finals at England'sexpense, they have competed in every tournament bar one (2008) and memorably lifted the Henri Delaunay Cup inneighbouring Sweden in 1992, the team having failed to qualify in the first instance before being reinstated in place ofYugoslavia. The famous 1980s 'Dynamite' side starring, among others, strike duo Preben Elkjær and MichaelLaudrup, is fondly remembered, not least as the first Denmark team to qualify for the FIFA World Cup. There havebeen three further participations since then, including a quarter-final at France '98.

Denmark's finest hour came in Sweden after the suspension of Yugoslavia handed them a second chance theygrasped with both hands. Having had just ten days to prepare they eliminated England and France in the group stage, then the Netherlands in a semi-final shoot-out. Goals from John Jensen and Kim Vilfort saw off Germany in theshowpiece.

Denmark were no strangers to the latter stages of the competition, though, having reached the last four in 1964 and1984. Morten Olsen's charges again overcame the initial hurdle in 2004, but three Czech Republic goals early in thesecond half ended their interest in the quarter-finals. Having failed to qualify for the 2008 edition, Denmark returned in2012 but fell at the group stage despite upsetting the Netherlands in their opening match.

Memorable EURO matches22/06/04: Denmark 2-2 Sweden, UEFA EURO 2004 group stageJon Dahl Tomasson twice gave Denmark the lead as a draw took them through to the last eight.

26/06/92: Denmark 2-0 Germany, EURO '92 finalGoals from Jensen and Vilfort completed the fairy tale for Richard Møller Nielsen's last-minute entrants.

19/05/84: Denmark 3-2 Belgium, 1984 UEFA European Championship group stageTrailing 2-0 after 40 minutes, Sepp Piontek's side recovered to book a place in the semis.

Did you know?Denmark have appeared in all 15 UEFA European Championship qualifying competitions, playing their first game inSeptember 1959, a 2-2 draw with Czechoslovakia in Copenhagen.

Morten OlsenDate of birth: 14 August 1949Nationality: DanishPlaying career: B 1901, Cercle Brugge KSV, RWD Molenbeek, RSC Anderlecht, 1. FC KölnCoaching career: Brøndby IF, 1. FC Köln, AFC Ajax, Denmark

• A commanding central defender, he played most of his club football in Belgium, winning three national titles and theUEFA Cup with Anderlecht during a six-year spell from 1980–86.

• Twice crowned Danish Player of the Year, he was captain of the legendary 'Dynamite' team of the mid-1980s thatreached two successive UEFA European Championships and the 1986 FIFA World Cup; became the first Danishfootballer to collect 100 caps in an international career spanning 19 years.

• Went straight into coaching after hanging up his boots and proved an immediate hit, leading Brøndby to two Danishchampionships and to the semi-finals of the 1990/91 UEFA Cup – the furthest any Danish club had progressed inEurope. Moved on to coach old side Köln and then, following a two-year break, Ajax, where, assisted on the field byhis ex-Denmark team-mate Michael Laudrup, he secured a Dutch league and cup double.

• Appointed Denmark coach in 2000 and guided the team to the finals of the 2002 World Cup and UEFA EURO 2004.He retained the position despite a failure to qualify for the next two major tournaments. Further success followed asDenmark topped both their 2010 World Cup preliminary group, celebrating qualification with a 1-0 victory over Swedenin his 100th match at the helm, and their UEFA EURO 2012 section.

• Could not steer the side beyond the initial stage of either tournament, but in spite of Demark missing out on the 2014World Cup he was awarded a two-year contract extension encompassing the UEFA EURO 2016 campaign.

Norway's most successful period came in the 1990s when coach Egil Olsen took them to successive FIFA WorldCups, in the United States and France. His replacement, Nils Johan Semb, then steered Norway to their only UEFAEuropean Championship, in Belgium and the Netherlands, where they bowed out early despite beating Spain in theiropening game. In his second spell at the helm, Olsen came close to qualifying Norway for UEFA EURO 2012 but theymissed out on a play-off spot on goal difference. Fourth place was a disappointing outcome in an inviting 2014 WorldCup qualifying group before they missed out on automatic qualification for UEFA EURO 2016 on the final day.

Norway did not begin life in the UEFA European Championship particularly well, losing both their matches againstAustria in qualification for the 1960 tournament. Since then, they have come close to qualifying several times butmanaged to do so only once, in 2000, when the highlight was a 1-0 win against Spain in Rotterdam. Two late Spaingoals in the last group game against Yugoslavia denied Norway a place in the quarter-finals.

Norway did reach the play-offs for UEFA EURO 2004, where Spain proved too strong, while a home defeat at thehands of Turkey ended their quest for a place at the 2008 finals. 'Drillo' Olsen returned as coach, but UEFA EURO2012 was another near miss, defeat in Portugal and picking up just one point from two meetings with Denmarkproving to be their downfall.

Memorable EURO matches13/06/2000: Spain 0-1 Norway, UEFA EURO 2000 group stageA Steffen Iversen header earned Norway a famous win, but it was not enough to progress.

09/10/1999: Latvia 1-2 Norway, UEFA EURO 2000 qualifyingVictory in Riga capped a perfect campaign on the road, with five straight away wins.

05/06/1991: Norway 2-1 Italy, EURO '92 qualifyingGoals from Tore André Dahlum and Lars Roar Bohinen hinted at Norway's future success.

Did you know?Olsen was also an expert in geography, and wrote a book about geographical trivia, 'Drillos Verden' (Drillo's World),which was published in 2002.

A former Yugoslav republic, Slovenia began competing as a separate entity in 1992 and caused a surprise byqualifying for both the UEFA European Championship and the FIFA World Cup at the second attempt. Led by coachKatanec and galvanised by star forward Zahovič, the team made it to the major tournaments of 2000 and 2002 thanksto play-off victories but did not progress beyond the group stage in either. Since that halcyon period there has beenjust one further qualification, via another play-off, with Russia defeated en route to an appearance at the 2010 FIFAWorld Cup, where again they were eliminated early.

A UEFA member since 1992, UEFA EURO 2000 was the best of Slovenia's five UEFA European Championshipqualifying campaigns to date, the nation making it to the finals following a 3-2 aggregate win against Ukraine in theplay-offs. Katanec's side acquitted themselves well in Belgium and the Netherlands, drawing against Yugoslavia andNorway either side of a 2-1 loss to Spain.

That success was almost repeated at the next time of asking when Slovenia finished second in their UEFA EURO2004 qualifying section, but Croatia proved too strong for Bojan Prašnikar's team in the play-offs, winning 2-1 onaggregate. After those campaigns, UEFA EURO 2008 and UEFA EURO 2012 were comparatively disappointing,Slovenia finishing sixth and fourth in their respective qualifying sections.

From 1980 it was expanded to an eight-team finals and remained in that format in 1984, 1988 and 1992 until 1996,when the 16-team format was adopted. UEFA EURO 2016 is the first tournament to be played as a 24-team finals.

Records of inactive countriesA number of UEFA associations have been affected by dissolution or splits of member associations. For statisticalpurposes, the records of these inactive countries have been allocated elsewhere: therefore, all Soviet Union matchesare awarded to Russia; all West Germany – but not East Germany – matches are awarded to Germany; allYugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro matches are awarded to Serbia; all Czechoslovakia matches are allocated toboth the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Abandoned/forfeited matchesFor statisical purposes, when a match has been started and then abandoned but later forfeited, the result on the pitchat the time of abandonment is counted. Matches that never started and were either cancelled or forfeited are notincluded in the overall statistics.
