Professor Dr. Gilberto Jose de Moraes of Escola Superior Agricultura Luiz de Queroz (ESALQ), Piracicaba, SP, Brazil and Professor Dr. Antonio Carlos Busoli, UNESP, Jaboticabal, Brazil visited University during 11th to 22nd March, 2013. Dr. Krishna Karmakar, Associate Professor of AINP on Acarology was instrumental for this visit and during their visit they delivered lectures in the Training-Cum-Interactive Programme on "Taxonomy and Management of Plant Mites of Economic Importance" organized by Directorate of Research on 13th and 14th March 2013. The series of lectures were made in the modern seminar room of the Central Library and it was inaugurated by Prof. C. Kole, Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor. In his inaugural talk Prof. Kole stressed upon collaborative research effort between India and Brazil. Prof. Moraes and Prof. Busoli visited Citrus Research Station Kalimpong, West Bengal on 16th March and discussed about the citrus diseases and infestation of Brevipalpus spp. with the In-Charge of the station Dr. Amalendu Ghosh. They also visited Zoological Survey of India, Kolkata on 20th March to examine the type specimens of some Phytoseiidae and Ascidae and discussed regarding the specimens with Dr. Asok Kumar Sanyal, Emeritus Scientist, ZSI, Kolkata. Their visit was very much successful. Both the nations will be benefited and enriched in the field of Acarology by initiating India-Brazil collaborative research project on Acarology in BCKV.

Dr. Krishna Karmakar, Assoc. Prof. of AINP on Acarology visited UNESP, Jaboticabal Campus and ESALQ-USP-Piracicaba, Sao Paulo, Brazil during 12th April to 21st June, 2012 for accomplishing research, teaching and training in the discipline of Acarology under supervision of Professor Dr. Moraes of ESALQ, Piracicaba, SP, Brazil and Professor Dr. Busoli, UNESP.

Unveiling of the Directory of Faculty of Horticulture

Participants in the Horticulture Fair

Interaction between Farmers-Scientists

During the inaugural programme, “Horticulture Faculty Directory”, a comprehensive compilation of the contact information of all the staff members of Faculty of Horticulture, key persons of the Viswavidyalaya, different organizations of both state and Central Governments was unveiled by Prof. Chittaranjan Kole, Vice-Chancellor, BCKV.

This Horticulture fair was organised through installation of 30 stalls in a sprawling area adjacent to Faculty of Horticulture. In this Horticulture fair, 6 Governmental organizations (Department of Food Processing Industries and Horticulture, Government of West Bengal;

National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development, Govt. of India; Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative Limited (IFFCO), Govt. of India; State Bank of India, Kalyani branch and United Bank of India, BCKVV Branch), 15 private business and corporate houses ( U P L G r o u p o f Companies;

Syngenta India Limited; I n d o f i l I n d u s t r i e s Limited; M/S Pallishree Limited; Texus, Farm and Garden Technologies Pvt. Ltd.; Noble Seeds Private Limited; Nuziveedu Seeds Ltd.; Maharudra Seeds Pvt. Ltd.; Bharat Nursery Pvt. Ltd.; Shanti Agri-Horti Pvt. Ltd.; Aerotech Engineering works; North Bengal Floritech; M/S Rabiyal Hossain and M/S Biswakarma Furniture) and 4 Co-operative Societies (Narapatipara, Bhabanipur, Chapra-Dhantala and Radhanagar) participated through rendering to financial assistance and displaying of their product and services in the respective stalls. Apart from these, separate stalls were erected from the University side by the Faculty of Horticulture, Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering, Directorate of Extension Education, All India Coordinated Project on Vegetable Crops, Tuber Crops, Sub Tropical Fruits, Tropical Fruits, Floriculture and MAP & Betel vine.

Training and awareness was imparted to 500 farmers from Nadia, 24 Parganas (North), Hoogly, Howrah and Murshidabad districts in three days through interaction between farmers and panel of scientists of the Viswavidyalaya. Both farmers and scientists expressed their satisfaction in this teaching-learning process.

Horticulture show

A two-hour slot was allotted to the corporate

sectors to interact with the farmers through lectures and audio-visuals regarding their products and services. The farming community showed keen interest for the new product and modern technologies.

This competitive “Horticulture show” was the focal point of attraction of this Horticulture fair. A number of vegetables, fruits, flowers and processed products were displayed by more than 100 farmers of mainly Nadia and 24 Parganas districts. Altogether, 36 prizes were awarded as judged by the panel of experts from the Faculty of Horticulture, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya.

He emphasized the need for holding such Udyan Mela every year on a regular basis in the Viswavidyalaya.

Prof. Chittaranjan Kole, Vice-Chancellor, BCKV in the presidential address expressed his keen interest on Ho r t i c u l t u r e . He stressed on qualitative improvement in both teaching and research on Horticulture in the Viswavidyalaya. He also highlighted the need of holding Agriculture and Horticulture fair in the Viswavidyalaya to have a lively bridge between the farming community and Viswavidyalaya.

The inaugural programme ended with the vote of thanks given by Prof. Bhagbat Chandra Banik, Organizing Secretary of Udyan Mela.

The Udyan Mela was formally inaugurated by Shri Subrata Saha, Minister-In-Charge, Department of Food Processing Industries and Horticulture, Govt. of West Bengal in presence of Vice-Chancellor, all the guests and dignitaries.

During the inaugural programme, 12 former Professors of Faculty of Horticulture: Prof. T. K. Bose, Prof. R. G. Maity, Prof. S.C. Maity, Prof. S. K. Sen, Prof. M. G. Som, Prof. N. Roychoudhury, Prof. T.P. Mukhopadhyay, Prof. T.K. Chattopadhyay, Dr. B. Biswas, Prof. P. Ghanti, Prof. N.C. Paria and Prof. P. K. Chattopadhyay were felicitated by Shri Subrata Saha, Minister-In-Charge, Department of Food Processing Industries and Horticulture, Govt. of West Bengal on behalf of the organizing committee of Udyan Mela by presenting them flower bouquet and shawl.
