    Module 1

    INTRODUCTION AND FOUNDATION CONCEPTS

    This introductory module presents students with some key

    concepts and terminology within the IT management eld.

    It also denes what IT management is, and gives students

    a broad outline of what to expect from the remainder of

    this course.

    Module 2

    INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES

    Module 2 introduces students to the various types of

    information technologies typically found in an organisation,

    as well as the management issues associated with each.

    These include hardware, networks, the internet, telecoms

    and software.

    Module 3BUSINESS SYSTEMS AND DATA

    This module focuses on the types of systems that support

    businesses, including ERP, CRM, business applications, as well

    as custom developed and web-based systems. It also looks at

    the supporting technologies of these systems (e.g. databases,

    data centres and hosting environments), and some of the

    challenges surrounding systems.

    MOBILE AND CLOUD COMPUTING

    Module 4 is centred around the types, supporting technologies,

    market trends and associated management issues of mobile

    and cloud computing. It also considers the issue of remote

    access - the types, challenges, advantages and disadvantages,

    as well as required supporting technologies for remote access.

    SECURITY

    This module focuses on security technologies and architecture;

    management security concerns and considerations (e.g.

    network attacks, hardware theft and information leaving the

    oce); and the support technologies available to overcome

    these security threats.

    This module examines the various methodologies and tools

    that are typically used in an IT environment. It also considers

    specic management challenges, as well as the relationship /

    alignment between IT and business priorities and objectives.

    Module 7

    IT CHANGE MANAGEMENT

    The concept of change management from an IT perspective, is

    explored in this module. Related concepts and methodologies,

    the management of employees (e.g. training), and the

    implications of IT changes are all covered.

    Module 8

    IT PROJECT MANAGEMENT

    Module 8 focuses on IT project management methodologies,

    roles, planning, timelines, tools and challenges.

    This module looks at the management of the customer-supplier value chain. Service level agreements, outsourcing,

    social media, and the associated tools and software are explored.

    Module 10

    ETHICS

    This nal module looks at various topics related to the ethical

    responsibilities of IT management. This includes software

    permissions, illegal downloads, the issue of condentiality,

    intellectual property, software piracy and the use of internet

    content. It also considers social responsibilities and issues,

    particularly around the idea of green computing.

    Who should attendThis course is most suited to those currently working in an IT environment, either within

    a dedicated IT rm, or the IT department of any organisation, including: hardware

    engineers, software engineers, network engineers, network architects, applications engineers,

    programmers, security specialists, support specialists, system analysts, system architects,

    technical specialists, and telecommunications specialists, etc. It is also suited to general

    managers, entrepreneurs and business owners who want to gain an understanding of

    the relationship between technology and business in the modern-day organisation.

    Course deliveryThe course is delivered through the unique GetSmarter Learning website. To ensure that

    you are able to maintain a work-life balance while completing the course, the content is

    divided into manageable weekly modules. On each Monday of the 10-week course, you

    will receive one module to complete in your own time and at your own pace throughout

    the week. Each module consists of the following components: downloadable PDF course

    notes; video lectures; online discussion forum; online multiple-choice practice quiz; weekly

    module assignment; and further reading and resources (optional). The Course Instructors,

    Jorn Das and Gary Fouche, will provide you with academic support through the online

    discussion forum for the duration of the course. A designated Course Coordinator will alsobe available on email and telephone to provide you with administrative support. The course

    has been designed in such a way that it allows you to study anywhere and anytime, at your

    own pace.

    Assessment and award of the certificateThe course is focused on teaching you practical, formal skills that you can apply in your

    career. You are not required to write any exams. Assessment is based on a series of

    practical weekly assignments completed online, which are either written or quiz-based.

    You will need to achieve a combined nal mark of at least 50% to receive the certicate

    as issued by the University of Cape Town.

    Course APPROVALThis course is approved by the University of Cape Town. You will receive a certicate

    issued by the University once you have successfully completed the course. The course is

    developed and presented by the University of Cape Town in partnership with GetSmarter.
