It means so much to me to directly benefit from the generosity of our alumni. It inspires me to work harder, to dedicate myself to the profession, and to return the favor to future generations of student pharmacists after I graduate.

– Mandalene Mandap, Pharmacy Alumni Association Scholarship Recipient

Thank You

Page 3: UCSF School of Pharmacy

Dear Friends,As I reflect on my 41 years on faculty at the UCSF School of Pharmacy, 14 of those as dean, I remember years filled with tremendous accomplishment and deep appreciation for your support. This past year was no different.

As budgets tighten, your financial generosity becomes ever more important to our success. You are directly responsible for helping us accomplish our plans to create a new framework for therapeutics discovery and development, ensure that patients get the best results from their medicines, and shape the future of pharmacy science and education by working in fresh and collaborative ways.

You will notice that the next couple pages of this honor roll look a bit different than in years past because I think it’s important to show you the impact of your gifts in the context of our financial picture.

What you will see – not surprisingly given the current economic climate of the state, nation and world – is that California state funding of the UCSF School of Pharmacy has decreased significantly and tuition has increased to help absorb this decline.

You will also see how much your contributions mean to our students and faculty members. Almost 40 percent of your gifts support student scholarships; another 40 percent support our exceptional researchers; and the rest ensure that we stay competitive by, for example, having the resources to attract the best new faculty and teach in exciting new ways.

A heartfelt “thank you” to one and all.

Warmly,

Mary Anne Koda-Kimble, PharmD ’69Dean, UCSF School of PharmacyThomas J. Long Chair in Community Pharmacy Practice

Federal Contracts and GrantsFor the 31st year in a row, the UCSF School of Pharmacy has received more National Institutes of Health (NIH) research funding than any other pharmacy school in the nation. That’s because our researchers consistently make astounding discoveries. But their excellence also comes with a cost. The more research funding they bring in, the more infrastructure is needed to support their continuing success – support that must be provided by the school, and at dollar amounts above and beyond what is allotted by the NIH. Private gifts help cover these expenses that keep our researchers at the top of their game.

California State General Funds and Student Professional Fees (Tuition)Because of the decrease in state funding as a percentage of the school’s budget, the tuition and fee costs to students have increased out of budget necessity – from $1 million in 2002 to $6 million in 2011. Private support, therefore, is ever more important to the school and our students.

Private Support (Gifts)Private support is critical because:

n It is a reliable and sustainable source of support in an extremely tight economic time, especially in regards to state funding

n It is an important source of scholarship support for students, especially as tuition continues to rise to make up for reductions in state funding

n Endowments, in particular, provide a dependable source of income

n It allows us to pursue bold new ways of discovering therapeutics, caring for patients, and educating student pharmacists and PhD science students

Chancellor and Husband’s Historic Gift to Student Support Inspires Rodondis

UCSF Chancellor Susan Desmond-Hellmann and her husband, Nicholas Hellmann, present their generous gift.

UCSF Chancellor Susan Desmond-Hellmann, MD, MPH, and her husband, Nicholas Hellmann, MD, recently made an extraordinary gift to the campus: $1 million for professional student scholarships to be divided four ways between the schools of dentistry, medicine, nursing and pharmacy.

Each of the schools has received $250,000 by securing a matching gift of $250,000, creating the first Chancellor’s Endowed Scholarships at UCSF. Husband-and-wife alumni Kevin Rodondi, PharmD ’85, and Lisa Rodondi, PharmD ’84, jumped in to make the match for the School of Pharmacy.

“I’m really grateful that I was able to attend UCSF,” says Lisa. “The combination of my edu-

cation and my mentors really allowed me to get any job I wanted. Not that I didn’t work hard, but I give a lot of credit to UCSF and the friends and community I gained there. I believe in the power of education.”

The Rodondis’ gift will support students who are in financial need, demonstrate leadership and show commitment to community service.

The largest donation ever to be received from a past or present UCSF chancellor was motivat-ed by the campus’s new educational fundraising priority.

“I have a particular fondness for UCSF’s edu-cational mission because that’s what brought me here in the first place,” says Desmond-Hellmann, who came to UCSF as an intern in 1982. “I knew

that I had landed at just the place I wanted to be: one committed to training the very best health care providers and researchers, but doing it in an amazingly warm and nurturing environ-ment.”

She continues, “I am determined to do what I can to preserve that special culture and, in some key ways, make it even better.”

Nick Hellmann, who met his wife while they were both residents at UCSF, says, “We want to help UCSF continue its leadership and excel-lence in professional education, and inspire other alumni and friends to support our students.”

That was a motivation for the Rodondis’ gift, as well. “I think it’s very important that we as pharmacists and alumni step up our level of giv-ing to help support the future practitioners and leaders,” says Kevin. “I just hope it catches on.”

The generosity of these four alumni will make a significant difference as the California state budget cuts catapult tuition and fees, says Mary Anne Koda-Kimble, PharmD ’69, dean of the School of Pharmacy. Tuition and fees for California residents have risen to $33,285, a 10 percent increase from 2010 to 2011. “Lisa and Kevin, Sue and Nick are spectacular examples of the power of alumni giving. They are people who lead by example. They care deeply about ensuring that our students continue to have ac-cess to leading educations, and they’ve acted boldly to make that happen.”

UCSF made its mark on students in the Class of 1969. In the first year (1966) of their PharmD education, the School of Pharmacy developed a pharmacy service that put pharmacists directly among physicians, nurses and patients on a hospital floor in the UCSF Medical Center. Pharmacists came “upstairs” full time, for the first time, and the concept of clini-cal pharmacy took root.

The success of what is known as the Ninth Floor Project led to a required clini-cal clerkship program, which now encompasses the fourth year of the PharmD program.

“I really believe it was a very creative time for pharmacy,” says Lloyd Young, PharmD ’69, dean of pharmacy and health scienc-es at Wayne State University. “Over the next several decades the graduates of the Class of ’69 served as leaders in the profession.”

Now the Class of 1969 has made its mark on UCSF. It has donated $50,000 to establish an en-dowed scholarship to support pharmacy students.

At their 40th reunion in 2009, Ted Tong, PharmD ’69, Dan Furtado, PharmD ’69, Mary Anne Koda-Kimble, PharmD ’69, and Young got to talking about the cost of a PharmD education at UCSF. “When we were students, the people of California

bore the bulk of the costs for public education,” says Furtado, who is the former mayor of Camp-bell, Calif., and a pharmacology professor at Stan-ford University. “Now it’s much more of a burden to

individual students, and it’s much more expensive.”

He continues, “We be-lieve the class endowment provides a good opportunity for our class, who had the benefits of an affordable pub-lic education at the time, to contribute and help support students today.” Together, the four pledged to raise funds for a scholarship and encouraged their classmates to contribute.

“When a UCSF student gets some financial assistance, that allows him or her to experience opportunities, like we had with the Ninth Floor Project, that might not be possible if they had to work their way through school,” says Tong, associate dean for students at the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy.

“This is an endowment that’s a continuing legacy,” he adds. The class would like to raise an additional $50,000 for a goal of $100,000 by their 50th reunion. “I like the idea that the students who receive the scholarship from our class will think, ‘Gosh, the Class of ’69 must have been pretty special.’”

“Receiving an alumni scholarship has allowed me to focus on gaining the skill set to become a successful pharmacist. It has also given me the opportunity to strive to a make difference in our community. Thank you so much for your support and generosity!”

A group of students attentively watches and takes notes as the pharma-cist reviews a patient’s medication history. These students, however, are much younger than your typical pharmacy trainees. As participants in UCSF’s Early Conditional Acceptance Program (ECAP), they are barely out of high school.

Based at UCSF’s Fresno campus, ECAP readies California’s Central Valley teenagers for eventual acceptance into the doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) program at UCSF. The goal is to address “the severe short-age of health care professionals in the Central Valley,” says Mitra Assemi, PharmD ’97, “particularly providers who represent the same culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds of the residents of this region.” Assemi is director of UCSF’s Fresno Pharmacy Education Program and head of ECAP.

Youth who show promise in science and math are admitted into ECAP as high school seniors. As they attend a college or university, they are supported and mentored by UCSF and local pharmacists. Upon gradua-tion, the students are guaranteed admission into UCSF’s PharmD pro-gram if they meet certain criteria. The first ECAP cohort will be graduating from college and will have the opportunity to apply to UCSF this year.

While getting into pharmacy school at UCSF is a lofty goal, paying for it can be even more intimidating for graduates of ECAP, who, for the most part, come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Luckily, OptumRx has stepped in.

“The pharmacy profession has been struggling for decades to attract diverse trainees who will eventually go back to serve the communities they came from. The problem is that we aren’t reaching them at a young enough age. By the time they reach college, it’s too late,” says John Jones, senior vice president of professional practice and pharmacy policy for OptumRx.

OptumRx has generously donated funds both for a scholarship for the first incumbent student, as well as for the administrative functioning of the program. “Having a partner like OptumRx – one that truly embraces the raison d’être of this program – is just so inspiring” says Assemi.

There is always the chance that a student might follow a pharmacy-related path through high school and college and then ultimately decide to enter another profession, like engineering or medicine. “I would not consider that a failure,” says Jones. “If a student is inspired by pharmacy to better his or her community and the nation through any science-relat-ed discipline, I’d say that’s a success.”

To view the website OptumRx recently launched aimed at exposing teens and tweens to pharmacy as a potential profession, go to www.pharmacyforme.org.
