What makes a city great?

With deepest appreciation,

Celesta M. Billeci Miller McCune Executive Director

Dear Friends,During any given year we give each of you many reasons to come together, fuel your passions and broaden your horizons. But I have to point out some “can’t-miss” personal favorites that deserve special mention:

• Nobel Peace Prize recipient Malala Yousafzai in one of only three U.S. appearances this summer. (June 27)

• Ry Cooder! One of the greatest living guitarists teams up with Ricky Skaggs and Sharon White, who together range far and wide among American musical styles. (September 29)

• It would be hard to imagine more gorgeous dancers than those of New York City Ballet MOVES, hearts still beating to the mastery of George Balanchine, performing to live music. (October 26 & 27)

• A dear friend to A&L, Yo-Yo Ma returns with his magnificent Silk Road Ensemble. (February 21 & 22)

• The fabulous soprano Renée Fleming, the diva we love to love, shares her stellar talent with us in the intimacy of Campbell Hall. (February 28)

• Binge-Worthy Journalism: Backstage with the Creators of Serial, Sarah Koenig & Julie Snyder. (March 3)

But that’s not all. Take a moment to browse what’s inside. Then, order your tickets today, and please consider a generous contribution to cover the cost of making this magic happen. This season will conclude our five-year Campaign for Arts & Lectures, and we need your help to hit that final goal. As you can see from the photos here, we’re fueling passions and broadening horizons every day.

New Orleans native Trombone Shorty and his band Orleans Avenue are an “unstoppable force” (The New York Times) in today’s music scene with a hard-edged funk, jazz, rock and hip-hop dynamic that delivers big on rock-star swagger with the musical chops to back it up. Their singular blend of performance and improvisation in the jazz tradition is one high-octane party that dares you not to dance in your seat, because in Shorty’s words, “No matter what kinds of problems we might be going through… music is the place where we can all get along. We can all jam” (The Guardian, U.K.). Don’t miss this chance to kick off A&L’s 2015-2016 season with Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue before they headline at the Monterey Jazz Festival the following evening!

“Cooder-White-Skaggs is the legacy express, or I’ll eat a bug,” quipped Cooder. “You are going to hear four-part singing from the heart, the finest and best instrumental activity in the land, songs you know and love… Now who’s happy?”

“Art is the only way to run away without leaving home.” – Twyla Tharp

Twyla Tharp is an American original. In a lifetime of more than 160 works, the legendary dancer and choreographer has redefined dance and its many genres, sending “an immense amount of spellbinding movement into the world” (The New York Times). From jazz to full-length ballets, from Broadway to Hollywood, the Emmy and Tony Award-winner has forged a career that is nothing short of legendary. To celebrate her 50th year in the business, Tharp takes a new company of 12 dancers on a national tour with a new set of works that showcases her signature style – bold, brash and painstakingly precise – set to an equally diverse soundtrack with music by John Zorn, J.S. Bach, Henry Butler and Steven Bernstein. “Modern dance is not less,” she has said, “modern dance is more” (Kennedy Center Honors, 2008).

The dazzling multimedia spectacle Alchemia manipulates the notion of transformation and the four classic elements: earth, air, fire and water, to create a visually arresting theatrical experience full of whimsy, sensuality, beauty and intrigue. Writes the Chicago Tribune: “They are inspired vaudevillians, creating slapstick, science fiction and improvisational surprise. Such quick, bright explosions of theatricality are delightful tricks and crowd pleasers…Their audience floats out on a dizzying high of pleasure.”

The group’s magnetism has attracted everyone from Prince to Beck to John Legend to Michael Bublé, both on stage and in the recording studio, not to mention countless fans at more than a decade of electrifying shows that bring packed rooms to rapture. There’s a freshness in the band’s performance and songwriting that will keep those sharp danceable funk grooves in your bones; the fervent, impassioned singing in your heart; and the sweet soul hooks sticking in your head for days on end.

“Arturo O’Farrill’s Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is one of the best jazz orchestras in existence, a powerhouse outfit whose precise section work is enhanced by thrilling soloists.” The New Yorker

Pianist and composer Arturo O’Farrill – leader of the “first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz” (The New York Times) – earned a reputation as a soloist in

groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte. Son of the late, great composer Chico O’Farrill, he established the Grammy Award-winning Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra in order to bring the vital musical traditions of Afro Latin jazz to a wider audience. A “joyful force” (NPR) that fuses Latin rhythms, African-based percussion, modern jazz and swing, this 18-piece orchestra roars through new commissions and compositions by the best in Latin music: Tito Puente, Astor Piazzola, Hermeto Pascoal and Chico O’Farrill.

Taylor Mac’s24-Decade History of Popular Music: The 1910s & 1920sTUE, MAR 8 / 8 PM / CAMPBELL HALL$35 / $25 / $10 UCSB students

“One of the most exciting theater artists of our time.” Time Out New York

Get ready for an evening of glittering musical time travel. Equal parts bedazzled shaman, searing social critic and radical angel, Taylor Mac is a critical darling of the New York cabaret scene, beloved for his iconic beauty, disarming vulnerability and soaring spirit. Says Mac, “I think of myself as a fool in the Elizabethan sense... someone who is phantasmagorical enough in their aesthetic and behavior that they can say what everybody knows is true.” Mac’s dynamic performance will feature selections from an ambitious 24-hour extravaganza that will, upon completion, cover the last 240 years of popular music.

“Cash comes full circle as a storyteller and singer of exceptional grace and grit. It’s among her finest work in a 35-year career.” The Boston Globe

Singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash will perform selections from the acclaimed album The River and the Thread with collaborator, guitarist and husband, John Leventhal. Winner of three Grammy Awards (including Best American Roots Song for “A Feather’s Not a Bird”), the collection of original songs connects and re-connects Cash to the American South, the place of her birth and the home of her ancestors. It follows the award-winning albums Black Cadillac and The List with Cash’s own poetic survey of the places and people of the south. Says Cash, “The soul and richness of the people and the music of the south resonates in a particular way for all of us. It’s a deep connection.”

José González and yMusic

THU, MAR 10 / 8 PM / CAMPBELL HALL$40 / $25 / $18 UCSB students

José González is a testament to the irrefutable power of one man and a guitar. His classically-inspired playing

draws comparisons to Nick Drake, Paul Simon and Elliott Smith. He is a masterfully eloquent interpreter

of folk, pop and world music traditions, building songs that are powerful, haunting and intimate. The Swedish-born musician has released three solo albums – Veneer,

which won a Swedish Grammy, In Our Nature and Vestiges & Claws – and is also a founding member of

the band Junip. González will be joined by yMusic, a group of New York City instrumentalists whose

virtuosic execution has attracted the attention of high-profile collaborators as formidable and innovative as

Beck, Sufjan Stevens, Mark Dancigers and Ben Folds.

A singing voice as “soft and supple as a down comforter.”

“She’s one of the most gifted artists in her generation of Indian-classical artists.” Los Angeles Times

“She plays with great sensitivity and emotion, bending and twisting notes so that they pirouette like the dancers that

spin around in interminable circles.” The World Music Report

Anoushka Shankar is a true cross-cultural musician. Her interest in many genres of music is illustrated by her Grammy-nominated albums Rise,

Traveller and Traces of You. However, the ancient Indian classical form that was handed down from her father, Ravi Shankar, is always a central current

running through her work. For this performance, Manu Delago – the Austrian percussionist and frequent collaborator of Björk – will perform

on the Hang drum. Multi-instrumentalist Sanjeev Shankar, who plays the shehnai (double reed instrument) and tanpura (longnecked lute), along

with a guest DJ round out the lineup. In the words of award-winning musician Nitin Sawhney, “No one embodies the spirit of innovation and

experimentation more evidently than Anoushka Shankar.”

“A stunning blast of exuberance & virtuosity.” The New York Times

“Fearsome… Phenomenal musicians.” MOJO

Long revered as the greatest Balkan Gypsy brass orchestra, the Boban and Marko Marković Orchestra is led by Boban Marković, judged the “best trumpet on Earth” at the legendary Guca festival in central Serbia. Originating from Vladicin Han, southern Serbia, the band is wholly defined by its Gypsy lineage; from an old-world brass heart comes flavors as diverse as flamenco, klezmer, Latin and rock. Marković’s son, Marko, who joined the ensemble at age 14, has subsequently become the main soloist, arranger and composer of new material. Now, with Marko as the visionary, they are taking off in thrilling new directions, performing an eclectic repertoire that “zigzags between Turkish delights, ballistic Balkan rhythms and funk that would draw a smile from George Clinton’s countenance... genius at work here” (The Weekend Australian).

Grammy-nominated Cécile McLorin Salvant – one of the most acclaimed jazz vocalists to emerge in years – so captivated the audience with her breathtaking 2015 Santa Barbara debut that we just had to bring her back for more! This phenomenal young singer bends notes to her will and gets inside each song the way an actress inhabits a role, so incredibly that The New York Times proclaimed, “If anyone can extend the lineage of the Big Three – Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, and Ella Fitzgerald – it is this 23-year-old virtuoso.”

Gift certificates are not issued as a credit for returned tickets. Non-subscribers may only exchange tickets for a different perfor-mance of the same event for a $4 fee per ticket.

Lost TicketsTickets can be replaced only for reserved-seating events. Contact the Ticket Office in advance of the event for replacements.

RefundsAll sales are final. No refunds except in the case of a canceled event not replaced. Handling charges and facility fees are not refundable. Due to the nature of live events, artists, venues, programs, dates and times are subject to change.

Services for Patrons with Disabilities

A&L is committed to making events accessible to all who wish to enjoy them. For more information about disability-related accommodations including wheelchair seating, assistive listening devices, large-print programs and seating for patrons with special needs, please call our Ticket Office. Campbell Hall is equipped with a Hearing Loop assistive listening system that is compatible with t-coil hearing aids. All venues are wheelchair accessible, and you may contact The Granada Theatre or Arlington Theatre directly about accessible seating at those venues.

Suitability for ChildrenWith the exception of our Family Fun series, A&L’s performing arts season is designed primarily for adult audiences. However, some of our performances will reward young viewers. If you have questions about the appropriateness of an event, please don’t hesitate to call. Each child, regardless of age, must have a ticket and sit in a seat.

Late SeatingPatrons who arrive after a performance has begun will not be seated until an appropriate point in the program determined by the artist.

Group SalesGroups of 20 or more are invited to take advantage of special rates for many events. Call (805) 893-6038 or email [email protected].

Tax-deductible DonationsIf you are unable to attend a performance, you may return your tickets to the A&L Ticket Office two business days before the event as a tax-deductible contri-bution. It is the policy of the University of California, Santa Barbara and the UC Santa Barbara Foundation that a portion of gifts and/or the income from gifts may be used to defray the costs of raising and administering funds.

Canceled PerformancesIf a performance is canceled, you will receive a full refund or a credit toward another A&L performance that you request. Refunds are granted only for canceled performances not replaced. Handling charges and facility fees are not refundable.

UC Santa Barbara Smoke-Free and Tobacco-Free PolicyUnder the authority of California Government Code 7597.1, smoking and the use of all tobacco products, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e.g., “e-cigarettes”) are prohibited anywhere at all indoor and outdoor spaces managed by UC Santa Barbara.
