TABULATED NEUTRON CROSS SECTIONS
PART I

INTRODUCTION
Since the issuance of UCRL-5226 in May 1958, there have been many
additional experimental determinations of neutron c r o s s sections. A number
of the newer experiments cover energy ranges and isotopes which had been
previously measured. To avoid confusion to the user of this compilation an
editing procedure has been undertaken to eliminate those measurements which
a r e felt to be superseded. In a few cases , the normalization of a s e t of data
has subsequently been found to have been incorrect and the data have been r e -
normalized. These data appear enclosed by parentheses.
The c r i t e r i a of selecting the data to be included and, consequently, those
to be excluded, a r e complex. In every case , however, there had to exist posi-
tive definable reasons for excluding measurements . The t ime of measurement
was not considered a positive r eas on. Source strengths, neutron resolution,
detection techniques, agreement with other experiments a r e some of the c r i -
t e r i a used. The excellence of technique and high o rde r of intellectual respon-
sibility of experimental physicists in general must be commented upon. Were
it not for these attributes the selection of data would have been an impossible
task.
In one instance, two se t s of data were included for the same c r o s s section
to i l lustrate the significance of improved neutron resolution. Two experiments,
both per formed by Dr. Car l T. Hibdon of Argonne National Laboratory, a r e
presented for the low kilovolt total c r o s s section of aluminum. Both experi-
ments a r e relatively recent and both were done with grea t care . P e r u s a l of
the data makes the point of the significance of neutron resolution.
UCRL-5226 Revised
It will be noticed that, in a number of cases , recent isolated measure -
men t s a r e inserted in a s e r i e s made earl ier . In other cases an older meas - urement is included with a newer set. Very often this is because a s e r i e s of
measurements was made at a given energy but with different isotopes. Where
a s e r i e s exists over a range of energy but with the s a m e isotope it is useful
to compare the values of the s e r i e s with the isolated measurement to help
determine the validity of the isolated measurement for isotopes where no se t
of data exists a s a function of energy.
As an aid to the use r of the compilation, an effort ha3 b c e i ~ n~scle l o in-
clude an overlap of two abutting s e r i e s of data. For example, an experiment
in 195Z may have reported resul ts for a total c r o s s section f rom 1 to 5 Mev.
A subsequent measurement in 1959 of better quality may have ~ u ~ ~ l i c d data
for the same c ross section from 2 to 4 Mev. The ea r l i e r data a r e thus super-
seded from 2 to 4 Mev but a r e s t i l l the only values obtainable from 1 to 2 and
f rom 4 to 5 Mev. F o r comparison purposes an overlap in the measurements
i s presented for a sma l l energy range.
In an upper corner of each page there appears the elemental or jsotopic
symbol of the target nucleus. In those cases in which the superscript does
not appear, the measurement was performed with the natural isotopic d is t r i -
bution of the element. The type of c ross section i s centered above the ta.hl.1-
lated data.
The f i r s t four columns of the tabulation a r e self-explanatdry. The fifth
( Y r . - Ref.) is the year the mea.srlremcnt was reportcd.and t l ~ t ~ c l e r e ~ l c t ! as
numbered in the bibliography. For each measurement the experimentalist 's
~ t a t c m c i i t of r tsolul ion and et 'ror is used. If no statement was made a dash
i s entered.
The page numbering has been revised to'facilitatk the numbering of future
addenda. At the bottom of each page will be found a s e r i e s of three numbers
separa ted by colons. The f i r s t is the Z value of the element. The second i s
the isotopic m a s s number "A," i f a single isotope has been measured. If the

na tura l e lement with a mixture of is0tope.s was measured , the second number
i s "0. 1 1 The third number i s the pagination'for the par t i cu la r e lement o r iso-
tope. . F o r example, 3: 0:4 is the four th page of c r o s s . sect ions for na tura l lith-
i um and 3:6:4 i s the four th page f o r the l i thium isotope with m a s s 6.
DEFINITIONS OF THE CROSS SECTIONS
The c r i t e r i on of definition of the c r o s s sect ions presented h e r e i s to mini-
mize the possibil i ty of confusion on the pa r t of the u s e r and to minimize the possi -
bility of c l e r i ca l e r r o r in t ranscr ibing the data to the tabulation. The notation
r e p r e s e n t s a compromise between the intellectually satisfying sel f -consis tent
s e t devised by Dr. Herber t Goldstein and that which presen ts a l e a s t probabil-
ity f o r human e r r o r . To i l lus t ra te , in the Goldstein s y s t e m the inadvertent omis -
s ion of an apostrophe changes an inelas t ic scat ter ing c r o s s sect ion to the c r o s s
sect ion f o r e las t ic scat ter ing. Human fall ibil i ty being what i t i s , i t was decid-
ed to use the notation Itell1 fo r e las t ic scat ter ing. This , in no way, de t r ac t s
f r o m Dr. Golds te in ' s elegant self-consistent se t of notation. He has made a
notable contribution toward the elimination of the many ambiguit ies which ex-
is ted p r io r to the publication of h i s notation.
The symbols used h e r e a r e :
= to t - Total C r o s s Section.
Total minus Elas t ic C r o s s Section - includes a l l p r o c e s s e s except e las t ic scat ter ing.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The cooperation of many persons was solicited in the preparat ion of this
compilation. Almost w i t h o ~ t exception the cooperation requested was forth-
coming immediately. Many exper imenters forwarded da ta in advance of pub-
l ication and exer ted considerable effort to organize their data in the mos t con-
venient manner . The Brookhaven National Labora tory C r o s s Sections Center
put f o r t h considerable effort to organize and tabulate many neutron c r o s s
sect ions that had come to them by pr ivate communication and were not other-
wise available. Dr. Donald Hughes and Mr. Ben Magurno of Brookhaven
dese rve special thanks f o r their efforts.
Without the encouragement and support of Drs . Edward Te l l e r , Sidney
Fernbach , William Grayson and Ivan Weeks this project could not exist.
The en t i re burden of c l e r i ca l detai l was handled b$ Mrs. Violet Gamble
in a patient and efficient manner .
The Technical Information Division of this Labora tory cooperated in
obtaining repor t s , securing a pr in te r , and distributing the repor t .
To the many physicists and o the r s who offered encouragement, coop-
eration, ass i s tance , and consultation, the author extends a grateful and appre-
ciative "Thank you, eve ry one.
