The Coachesconnecticut head coach paul pasqualoniUConn head coach paul pasqualoni made his Husky coaching debut a suc-cessful one on Sept. 3, 2011 as the Huskies topped Fordham of the FCS. The Cheshire, Conn. native was named the 28th head football coach in UConn history on January 14, 2011. Pasqualoni is the all-time winningest coach in BIG EAST Conference league wins with 67 and overall wins with 115. He is just one of two league coaches in history to win four BIG EAST Championships. His overall college coaching record stands at 151-89-1 (34-17 at WCSU, 107-59-1 at Syracuse and 10-13 at UConn). Pasqualoni has had a highly-successful career on all levels of football -- pro-fessional, college and high school. He was the head coach at Western Connecti-cut from 1982-86 and led the team to the NCAA Division II playoffs in 1985. He had an extremely successful tenure as the head coach at Syracuse from 1991-2004. Pasqualoni led the Orange to 107 wins, four BIG EAST titles and a 6-3 postseason record. Among his bowl appearances at Syracuse were two Fiesta Bowls (1992 and ‘97) and an Orange Bowl (‘98). Forthepreviousfiveseasons,PasqualonihasservedonNFLstaffs--withDallas in 2006-07 and ‘10 and with Miami in 2008-09. HisfirstcoachingjobwasanassistantcoachatCheshireHSfrom1972-75.He is a 1972 Penn State graduate.

cincinnati head coach Butch JonesButch Jones is in his third year as the head coach at Cincinnati and led the Bearcats to a 4-8 record in 2010 and last year the team had a 10-3 record and beat Vanderbilt in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. He has an overall head coaching record of 49-26 and is 22-14 at Cincinnati. Prior to taking over the UC program, he was the head coach at Central Michigan from 2007-09. He led Central Michigan to a 27-13 record during his tenure there with three bowl appearances and a pair of Mid-American Conference championships. He was an assistant coach at West Virginia from 2005-06 and on the Central Michigan staff from 1998-2004. Jones was on the Ferris State staff from 1995-97 and was a graduate assistant at Rutgers from 1990-92. Jones graduated from Ferris State in 1990 and played two years of football.

UCONN VS. CINCINNAtI HIStOrySaturday’s game will be the ninth meeting all-time between UConn and Cincinnati and the Huskies are 2-6 all-time against UC and 2-5 in BIG EASt action. UConn has a 2-1 record for games played at rentschler Field with wins in 2008 and 2010 and a loss in 2006. Last season, UConn lost to Cincinnati by a 35-27 score on December 3 at Nippert Stadium. Connecticut was in an identical situation as this year as the team was 5-6 and needing a win for bowl eligibility. The tone of the game wassetquicklyastheBearcatsscoredfirstquartertouchdownsonafumblerecovery and an interception to lead 14-0 after one quarter and led 28-6 at the half.Cincinnatiled35-12afterthreequartersandtheHuskiesscoredthefinal15 points of the game to make the score closer. Johnny Mcentee was 20 of 40 in the air for UConn with 252 yards and two TDs with one interception. Lyle Mccombs rushed for 47 yards and Dave Teg-garthadfourfieldgoals. Munchie Legaux was 15 for 35 for 217 yards with three TDs and two INTs. isaiah pead rushed for 68 yards while anthony Mcclung had eight receptions for 142 yards and two TDs. In the last game at Rentschler Field, UConn defeated Cincinnati by a 38-

The win was the fourth in a row for the Huskies in BIG EAST play and set up the Huskies’ chance to beat USF the following weekandadvancetotheschool’sfirstBCSgame.UConn led 24-10 at the half, but after a scoreless third quarter, UC cut the lead to one touchdown (24-17) on a three-yard TD run by Zach collaros that capped an 88-yard drive with 8:41 to go. UConn’s Jordan Todman scored a pair of touch-downs the rest of the way to seal the win. Todman had 175 yards of rushing on the day with four TDs while QB Zach frazer was 11 of 24 in the air for 121 yards. Collaros was 26 of 50 for 288 yards and one

TD, but also threw four interceptions. The Bearcats made their Rentschler Field debut on Nov. 25, 2006 and came away with a 26-23 win on Kevin Lovell’sfieldgoalwith10secondstoplay. In 2007, UConn entered its game with the Bearcats ranked No. 16 in the country, but fell by a 16-3 score at Nippert Stadium on November 10. Cincinnati scoredtwofirstquartertouchdownsonpassesfromBen Mauk to take a 13-0 lead after one quarter and the Huskies never really threatened. In 2008, UConn topped the Bearcats by a 40-16 score at Rentschler Field fortheirfirstwinintheseries.Donald Brown ran for 150 yards in the game and cody endres was 18 of 42 for 196 yards. HUSKIES HAVE BEEN BOWL ELIGIBLETheUConnfootballteamhasbeenbowleligibleforfourtimesinthepastfiveyears and in six of the past nine. The 2010 UConn football team won the BIG EASTChampionshipandadvancedtoplayintheschool’sfirst-everBCSgame-- the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. UConn made the bowl eligible mark for the sixth time in the past eight seasons -- and the fourth consecutive. UConn lost to Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl and it defeated South Carolina by a 20-7 score in the 2010 Papajohns.com Bowl. The Huskies also went to the International Bowl in 2009 and defeated Buffalo. In 2007, UConn was 9-3 in the regular season and went on to the Meineke Car Care Bowl. In 2004, the Huskies went 7-4 in the regular season and won the Motor City Bowl. In 2003, UConn was 9-3, but did not go to a bowl because of its independent status.

WILLIAMS A FINALISt FOr POP WArNEr AWArDSenior wide receiver and returner Nick Williams (East Windsor, N.J.) has been namedoneoffourfinalistsforthethirdannualPopWarnerNationalCollegeFootball Award.The award, established in 2010, recognizes a Pop Warner alumnuswhohasmadeadifferenceonthefield,intheclassroomandinhiscommunity. It is presented to a student-athlete who has taken the ideals of Pop Warner to the next level and serves as a role model to Pop Warner’s young scholar athletes. Williams played Pop Warner football in Highstown, N.J., in sixth, seventh and eighth grade. Williams is UConn’s all-time leader in return yardage (punt and kickoff) with 2,389 yards and was named the BIG EAST Special Teams PlayeroftheWeek–thesecondtimethisyearhehasearnedthathonor–fol-lowing the Pittsburgh game. He is an economics major who will graduate this December and was a member of the 2011 BIG EAST All-Academic team. The winner of the Pop Warner National College Football Award will be an-nounced on December 5 during the 56th annual Pop Warner Super Bowl.

husKies and national pollsConnecticut has been ranked in the Associated Press poll for six weeks during its FBS history, four weeks in the USA Today poll and seven weeks in the BCS rankings. UConn was No. 25 on Dec. 5, 2010, in its only ranking of that year. UCONN FOOtBALL A LEADEr IN ACADEMICSThe UConn football program continues to be a leader in the BIG EAST Conference in terms of academic performance by its student-athletes. UConn was the top team in the NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of both October 2008 and ’09 among league schools. In 2010, the Huskies GSR was third in the BIG EAST and within four points of the second place team and this fall, the 2011 GSR came out and UConn was tied for fourth in the league, but within four points of the two schools that were tied for second. UConn’s 75 percent GSR mark was well ahead of the national GSR for FBS teams, which was 67 percent. The UConn football program also had the highest NCAA GSR for African-American student-athletes among all state universitiesthatparticipatedinabowlgamein2008.Infiveofthe past seven years, including 2007, ‘08 and ‘09, UConn was recognized by the American Football Coaches Association for its high graduation rate. UConn’s overall GSR in 2009 was the third-highest of the more than 50 state universities that participated in a bowl game. In 2012, the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) for the UConn football team was an impressive 963 over a four-year cycle, with a one-year mark of 950 for the 2010-11 academic year. The 963 was above the national average for FBS schools (952) and public institutions (943).

In the opening game vs. UMass, the Huskies were coming off as theylostthe2011seasonfinaleatCincinnatiandtheMarylandwin was coming off a loss to N.C. State while the Buffalo win was coming off a loss to Western Michigan. The Temple loss was coming off a loss to Rutgers, the Syracuse loss was coming off the Temple loss and the USF loss was coming off the Syracuse loss. The Pittsburgh win was coming off the USF loss.

Ball control is the KeYA telling sign of UConn’s strong performance on both sides of the ball during its tenure as a FBS program has been its ability to both record and prevent long drives. Since the start of the 2002 season, UConn’s offense has strung together 86 scoring drives of at least 80 yards while the Husky defense has surrendered just 69 such marches. UConn also holds a 22-10 advantage over its opponents in the number of 90-yard and over drives since becoming a I-A program.

HUSKIES DOMINAtING ON BOtH SIDES OF tHE BALLOver the past 124 games, UConn has outgained its opponent 70 times. This stretch, like many UConn trends, dates back to a 28-24 loss at Vanderbilt on Oct. 26, 2002.

Offense Notes

MCCOMBS HItS tHE 100-yArD MArK AGAINRedshirt sophomore running back Lyle Mccombs (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a breakout season last year as he rushed for 1,151 yards and seven TDs on 275 carries. He was named a Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America and was a Second Team All-Conference pick. McCombs was the second-leading freshman rusher in the country and trailed the leader by only 0.46 yards. McCombs rushing yardage was the ninth-highest in UConn single-season history while his carries were fourth. He was just the second UConn freshman (true or redshirt) to rush for 1,000 yards or more in a season. McCombs carried the ball 23 times for 119 yards on Sept. 22 vs.WesternMichigan–markingthefirsttimehehasgoneover100 yards this season. His second 100-yard game of the year came in the win over Pittsburgh when he went for 120 yards on 29 carries with one TD. On Saturday, he rushed for 133 yards vs. Louisville on 29 carries. It marked the ninth time in his career that he hit the 100-yard mark and he has 12 career rushing TDs. McCombs is now sixth in UConn career history with 497 rushing attempts. Donald Brown holds the record with 698 from 2006-08. McCombs has 1,951 career rushing yards and will move into the UConn top 10 for career rushing when he passes No. 10 an-dre Dixon, who had 1,958 from 2006-09. No. 9 is Tony Jordan with 1,983 from 1978-80 and No. 8 is Jeff gallagher with 1,989

from 1985-88. No. 7 is cornell Brockington with 2,198 from 2003-05 while the career leader is Brown with 3,800 from 2006-08. McCombs rushed for 82 yards on 23 carries vs. UMass with one rushing TD and then had 60 yards on 20 carries with one TD vs. N.C. State. He had a 43-yard reception in the fourth quarter vs.theWolfpackthatsetuphisfive-yardTDrushonthenextplay. McCombs rushed for 94 yards on 27 carries with one TD in the win over Maryland and had 29 carries for 97 yards vs. Buf-falo. He had 12 carries for 32 yards vs. Rutgers and missed the Temple game with an injury. He returned vs. Syracuse and had 16 yards on 12 carries and had 47 yards on 18 carries vs. USF.

WHItMEr HItS CArEEr HIGHS VS. WMUUConn redshirt sophomore chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) was named the team’s starter by Paul Pasqualoni heading into preseasoncampandmadehisfirstcollegiatestartvs.UMassonAug. 30. Whitmer was 15 of 25 in the air for 219 yards with two interceptions and was 15 for 27 for 204 yards with three intercep-tions vs. N.C. State. He was 10 of 16 in the air for 68 yards with no interceptions in the win over Maryland. Against Western Michi-gan, he had career highs with 28 completions, 44 pass attempts, three TD passes and 333 yards. He was 15 of 22 for 227 yards and one TD vs. Buffalo and was 14 of 32 for 191 yards and four interceptions vs. Rutgers. Whitmer was 22 of 39 in the air for 293 yards and two TDs inthelosstoTemple(Oct.13).Inthefirstquarterofthegame,he was eight of 10 for 159 yards and two TDs. His 42-yard TD passinthefirstquartertoTERyanGriffinwasthelongestofhiscollegiate career. He was 23 of 41 for 296 yards with an interception and a TD vs. Syracuse on Oct. 19 and was a solid 24 for 38 for 284 yards againstUSF,butdidhavetwointerceptionsonUConn’sfinaltwopossessions. In the win over Pittsburgh, Whitmer was 19 of 25 with an interception and a TD. In the win over Louisville, he was seven of 21 in the air for 72 yards and an interception. He left the game early in the fourth quarter with an injury. Inthelastfivegames(Temple,Syracuse,USF,Pittsburghand Louisville), Whitmer has thrown for 1,158 yards and four TD. Whitmer enrolled at Connecticut for the spring 2012 semes-ter and participated in spring practice and has three years of eligi-bility. Whitmer originally enrolled at Illinois in the fall of 2010 and was a redshirt. He spent the 2011 fall semester at Butler Commu-nity College in El Dorado, Kansas and was 180 for 316 in the air for 3,022 yards with 25 TDs and 14 interceptions. He was named All-KansasJuniorCollegeConferencefirstteamhonorsandearned National Junior College Athletic Association All-American honorable mention. Butler was the second-ranked junior college team nationally in 2011. Whitmer was named to The Champaign News-Gazette’s All-State team following his senior year of high school at Down-ers Grove (Ill.) South. He earned all state and all-area honors. He was 18 of 27 in the air for 187 yards and two touchdowns in UConn’s Blue-White Spring Football game on April 21, 2012.

It’S JOHNNy MCENtEEWith Whitmer going down in the fourth quarter, it was up to senior Johnny Mcentee (Fullerton, Calif.) to save the day for the Huskies–andhedidjustthat.McEntee,awalk-on,wasUConn’sstarting quarterback in all 12 games last season, but had seen actioninjustgamethisseason–theclosingmomentsoftheopener vs. UMass.



Against the Cardinals, McEntee was two of seven in the air for 20 yards and a touchdown. His touchdown pass came on a three-yard strike to junior Shakim Phillips (Paterson, N.J.) in the second overtime of the three OT win.

MCCUMMINGS At “tHE WILDCAt”Redshirt sophomore Scott Mccummings (Natick, Mass.) has been playing all season at quarterback in the “Wildcat” spot and had his best game of the season on Sept. 15 vs. Maryland. Mc-Cummings had eight carries in the game for 44 yards with one rushing. He scored on a three-yard run with 12:35 left to go in the second quarter to give UConn a 14-0 lead. McCummings also hadakeyroleinUConn’sfinalTDdriveofthegameashehada pass for two yards and three rushes for 30 yards, including a 21-yarder that moved the ball to the Maryland 19. Hehad33yardsonfivecarriesvs.USFwithalongcarryof25 yards and one carry for 13 yards against Pittsburgh. McCummings has a total of 128 rushing yards on the season on 37 carries and is the second-leading rusher on the Husky team.

davis leads the receiversUConn’s leading receiver this year is redshirt sophomore geremy Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga.), who has 39 receptions for 567 yards and a touchdown. Davis had just six receptions in all of 2011 with 73 yards. He had a career-high nine catches and 123yardsvs.WesternMichiganandalsohisfirstTDreception.He had another outstanding outing vs. USF (Nov. 3) with seven receptions for 98 yards. Davishadfivereceptionsfor79yardsandalongof26and

then backed it up with two catches for 27 yards vs. N.C. State and one reception for seven yards vs. Maryland. He had two receptions for 32 yards vs. Buffalo. The Huskies got a boost at the wide receiver position with two players who did not play in 2011. Redshirt sophomore Sha-kim phillips (Paterson, N.J.) is a transfer from Boston College who sat out in ’11 due to NCAA rules. Phillips had his best day as a collegiate player on Oct. 13 against Temple with seven recep-tions for 100 yards. He had two receptions in the win against Louisville on Saturday, including a three-yard TD reception in overtime. He had one reception for nine yards at BC in his freshman year of 2010. Following his senior year in high school, he played in the prestigious U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio. Phillips has made 25 receptions for 306 yards this season. Hehasmade17receptionsinthepastfivegamesfor216yards. Also back in 2012 is senior Michael Smith (Houston, Texas), who missed last year. From 2008-10, Smith had 73 receptions for the Huskies for 922 yards and a pair of TDs. Smith was the leading receiver on the 2010 BIG EAST Champion UConn team which went on to play in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Smith made three receptions for 30 yards vs. UMass, one vs. N.C. State for four yards, three for 35 yards vs. WMU and two for 26 yards vs. Buffalo. He had three receptions for 52 yards vs. RutgersandagainstTemple,hehadfivereceptionsfor54yardswithhisfirstTDreceptionsince2010.Hehadfourreceptionsfor61 yards against Syracuse and three for 40 yards vs. USF and one catch for 27 yards vs. Pittsburgh. Senior defensive end Jesse Joseph (Laval, Que.) led the way with 32 career starts, while senior cornerback Dwayne gratz (Piscataway, N.J.) had 29, senior linebacker Sio Moore (Apex, N.C.) had 21 and senior defensive end Trevardo Williams (Bridgeport, Conn.) has 19. Joseph tore

his left Achilles tendon at Maryland (Sept. 15) and is out for the remainder of the season.

UConn leads the BIG EAST in total defense, rushing defense, pass defense and sacks. Thethreefirstdownstiedaschoolrecordforleastallowedin a single game as UConn also gave up three vs. Navy in 2002. The three yards of rushing was the seventh lowest allowed in school history. The defense also stepped up vs. N.C. State (Sept. 8) and limitedtheWolfpacktosevenpoints,12firstdownsand54yardsof rushing. The seven points given up by UConn after two games this season was the fewest since UConn began the 2005 season with shutouts vs. Buffalo (38-0) and Liberty (Sept. 10).

trevardo gets the career sacK recordSenior defensive end Trevardo Williams (Bridgeport, Conn.) became the career sack leader in UConn history vs. USF (Nov. 3). Williams sacked B.J. Daniels on the third play of the second quarter to set the mark. Williams now has 30.5 career sacks while the former record belonged to Mark Michaels with 27 from 1982-85. Williams add-ed to his sack record by collecting three in the win vs. Louisville on Saturday for a total loss of 17 yards. In the second quarter, he had back-to-back sacks that resulted in losses of six yards each and forced the Cardinals to punt on a possession they had originally moved to the UConn 22-yard line on. Williams is fourth in UConn career history in tackles for a loss with 40.5. uyi Osunde (1999-03) is the leader there with 49. WilliamsisfifthinthecountryinsacksandisfirstintheBIGEAST at 1.05 per game. He is the ninth-leading total tackler on the Husky team this year. Williams gained preseason notice for 2012 by being named to preseason watch lists for the Bednarik Award, the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Lombardi Award. Williams earned Second Team All-BIG EAST honors last year and had a tremendous second half of 2011. Of his 43 tack-lesin2011,20ofthemweremadeinthefinalfivegamesandofhis15tacklesforaloss,10.5wereinthefinalfive.HeledtheBIG EAST and was ranked second in the country in sacks per game with 1.04 and was second in the BIG EAST and 32nd in the country in tackles for a loss.

SMALLWOOD 19tH IN tHE COUNtry IN tACKLESRedshirt sophomore linebacker Yawin Smallwood (Worcester, Mass.) leads UConn in tackles this season with 111 and is 19th



in the country (and is second in BIG EAST) in tackles per game at 10.36. He is also tied for 25th in the country in tackles for a losswith1.36pergame–whichissecondintheBIGEAST. Smallwood has been honored twice this season as the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week. He was honored after the Sept. 15 win over Maryland when he had a game-high 14 tackles —fivemorethananyotherplayerinthegame—togowith2.5sacks, 3.5 TFLs and a forced fumble. Smallwood was also UConn’s leading tackler in the opener vs. UMass as he had seven tackles with 3.5 for a loss. For his efforts, he was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week. Smallwood started all 12 games last year for the Huskies and was the second-leading tackler on the team.

GrAtZ rEtUrNS FOr A tOUCHDOWNUConn redshirt senior cornerback Dwayne gratz (Piscataway, N.J.) returned an interception for 37-yards for a touchdown in the second quarter of the game against UMass. UConn returned just one interception for a touchdown last year. The “pick-six” was the second of Gratz’s career as he had a 46-yarder against Oklahoma in the 2011 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Gratz,whoalsohadaninterceptiononMaryland’sfirstplayfromscrimmage on Sept. 15 and one vs. USF, now has eight career interceptions.

stephen returns to lineupUConn redshirt junior Shamar Stephen (Brookville, N.Y.) re-turned to the Husky lineup on Sept. 15 vs. Maryland and has now startedthelastsevengamesaftermissingthefirsttwogamesof’12 with a knee injury suffered in preseason camp. Stephen had begun camp as a projected starter on the defensive line as he played in 24 of 25 games over the past two seasons. He had three tackles vs. WMU, one against Maryland andBuffaloandfivewithhalfatackleforalossvs.Rutgers.Hehad three tackles vs. Temple, two vs. Syracuse and three vs. USF. AgainstRutgers,Stephenmadeaseason-highfivetacklesandblockeda50-yardfieldgoalattempt.TheblockedkickwasthefirstblockedfieldgoalbyConnecticutsinceJames hargrave against Murray State (Sep. 4, 2004).

SHOrt BrEAKS FOr tHE OFFENSEThe Connecticut defense is 10th in the country in three-and-outs forced this season at 5.00 per game. The Huskies have stopped opponents on third down 66% of the time this season and have forced three-play drives 36.7% (55-for-150) of the time. Florida State leads the country with 6.50 three-and-outs forced per game, followed by TCU (5.73), Alabama (5.33), Wisconsin (5.25) andMissouri(5.18)roundingoutthetopfive.

WAGNEr ALrEADy IN tHE BOOKSUConn redshirt junior cole Wagner (York, Pa.) has already es-tablished himself as a top performer in the UConn record books. Wagner has been the Husky punter for the past two seasons and was a Second Team All-Conference pick last year. This season, 25 of his 72 punts have been downed inside the20yardline,includingthreeoffivepuntsonOct.6vs.Rut-gers. He is now second in UConn career history in punting aver-age (min. 80 punts) with a 41.05 average, while the leader is Desi cullen (2006-09) with 41.12. Wagner is third in career number of punts (231) and second in career yardage (9,484).

NICK WILLIAMS JOINS ELItE COMPANyUConn senior Nick Williams (East Windsor, N.J.) returned a punt 58 yards for a touchdown on Sept. 15 for the opening score of the Maryland game and then had a 80-yard punt return for a TDagainstPittsburgh.Thereturnvs.Pittsburghwasjustthefifthin school history that went for 80 yards or more for a TD. Against Pittsburgh, he became UConn’s career leader in returnyardage(punts,kickoffsandinterceptions)with2,389–topping the mark of Larry Taylor (2004-07), who had 2,277. He is just the seventh player in UConn history to have two or more punt returns for a TD in a career. WilliamsbecomesjustthefifthUConnplayerinhistory,andonly second in the “FBS Era”, to have both a kick-off and punt return for a TD during a career. He joins Larry Taylor (2004-07), Jordan Younger (1996-99), Nick giaquinto (1975-76) and rich hedgepeth (1974-76). Williams was named the BIG EAST Special Teams Player of the Week following his game vs. Maryland and Pittsburgh. He was the ECAC Special Teams Player of the Week following the Pittsburgh game.

Located within miles of Interstates 91, 84 and 384, the home of the Huskies lies on 75 acres of land donated to the State of Connecticut from the historic Pratt & WhitneyAirfield.Thestadium,liketheformerairfield,isnamedfor that company’s founder, Frederick Rentschler. The stadium boasts a capacity of 40,000 with 38 luxury suites.

FAN NO. 2,000,000On Friday, Sept. 16, UConn welcomed the 2,000,000th fan to Renstchler Field in its history. That lucky fan was Shane Buzzell ofManchester,Conn..TheHuskieshavesoldout29oftheirfirst61 dates at Rentschler Field. UConn has played to 95.2-pct. Of capacity all-time there, drawing 2,361,541 fans, or an average of 38,089 per game.

rENtSCHLEr FIELD PrOVES FrIENDLy FOr HUSKIESThe Huskies went 7-0 at home in 2007 at Rentschler Field and also 6-0 in 2010. UConn’s 3-4 mark at home in 2006 was its only sub-.500 record at Rentschler Field. UConn finished 4-3 at rentschler field in 2011. The seven home wins in 2007 set a school record for a single season which was previously set in 2004. Prior to the Iowa State loss, uconn had won nine consecutive games at rent-schler field. UConn stands at 45-17 all-time at rentschler field includ-ing a 25-7 mark in non-conference games.

MICHIGAN, tENNESSEE WILL VISIt rENtSCHLEr FIELDFollowing UConn’s trip to Ann Arbor on Sept. 4, 2010, the Wol-verines will come to Rentschler Field on Sept. 21, 2013 to take on the Huskies. UConn will also play a home-and-home series with Tennes-see beginning in 2015 with the Volunteers coming to Rentschler Field on Sept. 26 with a return trip to Knoxville on Sept. 3, 2016. Other upcoming non-conference opponents coming to Rentschler Field include Maryland (2013) and Virginia (2106). EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - University of Connecticut redshirt sophomore quarterback Chandler Whitmer threw for 219 yards and Connecticut scored touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams to beat Massachusetts 37-0 Thursday night before a crowd of 35,270 at Rentschler Field in the opener for both teams. Connecticut’s defense dominated the game, holding UMass to just 59yardsofoffenseandlimitingtheMinutementothreefirstdowns.UMass did not have an offensive snap in UConn territory and the three UMassfirstdowntiedaHuskyschoolrecordfortheleastallowed. Redshirt sophomore Lyle McCombs rushed for 82 yards and a first-quartertouchdown,oneoftwobytheoffense.UConnalsoscoredon a 37-yard interception return by redshirt senior cornerback Dwayne Gratz and on a blocked punt. RedshirtjuniorChadChristenaddedfieldgoalsof36,47and19yardsforhisfirstcollegiatescores. Thiswasthe72ndmeetingbetweenthetwoprogramsbutthefirstsince 1999, when both teams were Division I-AA. Whitmer, a transfer who threw for more than 3,000 yards in junior college last year, completed 15 of his 25 passes, but also threw two interceptionsinhisfirstgameasaFBSstarter. Hehithisfirstthreepasses,includinga16-yardertoseniorNickWilliamsthatsetuptheHuskies’firstscore,aone-yardplungebyMc-Combs that capped a 12-play, 75-yard drive. Williams, who had more than 140 yards of total offense, returned the next UMass punt 34 yards, setting up UConn on the UMass 30. But safety Darren Thellen stopped the UConn drive - and made a few highlight shows - by diving out of bounds and tipping a Whitmer passbacktolinebackerTomBrandt,whomadehisfirstcareerintercep-tion. UConn had 372 yards of offense, but had three drives end with turnovers deep in UMass territory. Whitmer split time with redshirt sophomore Scott McCummings, who ran UConn’s version of the “Wildcat” offense. McCummings ran for 13 yards and a one-yard fourth-quarter touchdown that put UConn up 34-0. The defense got into the scoring column when Gratz stepped in front of UMass receiver Marken Michel and returned an interception 37 yardsforatouchdownwith1:49leftinthefirsthalf. The special teams got their score with just over four minutes left in the third quarter. UConn’s Taylor Mack blocked a punt after Colter Johnson dropped the snap, and the Huskies’ Max DeLorenzo recovered in the end zone to give UConn a 27-0 lead. EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - North Carolina State University red-shirt senior quarterback Mike Glennon threw a 46-yard third-quarter touchdown to receiver Bryan Underwood and the Wolfpack held on to beat the University of Connecticut 10-7 on Saturday before a crowd of 34,202 at Rentschler Field. UConn and NC State are both 1-1 on the season. Glennon and UConn redshirt sophomore quarterback Chandler Whitmer each threw for 204 yards. But Whitmer also had three passes intercepted as the Wolfpack forced four Huskies turnovers. All-America cornerback David Amerson recorded his 14th career interception and knocked away a fourth-down pass on Connecticut’s finaldrivetosecurethewin. Glennon completed 15 of his 30 passes but was sacked six times. NC State had just 258 yards of offense, but held the Huskies to 239. UConn redshirt sophomore Lyle McCombs rushed for 60 yards andcaughta43-yardswingpassthatsetuphisfive-yardfourth-quartertouchdown run to pull UConn to within three points with seven minutes left. Glennon opened the next drive by hitting Tobias Palmer with two quick passes to move into UConn territory. But the Huskies defense stiffened at the 27, and the Wolfpack, heading into a stiff wind, decided to go for it on fourth-and-two. Glennon’s pass to Underwood fell incom-plete, giving UConn one more drive with 3:17 remaining. Whitmer moved the Huskies from their own 27 to the 46 before being sacked by linebacker Brian Slay on third down and having Amer-son knock down the fourth-down pass. A bizarre UConn turnover led to NC State’s touchdown. Safety Earl Wolff tipped a Whitmer pass into the hands of Huskies redshirt se-nior tight end John Delahunt, who then fumbled the ball back to Wolff. Three plays later, Underwood ran under a Glennon pass, catching it with hisfingertipsatthe18-yardlineandrunningtherestofthewayintotheend zone for a 10-0 lead. Amerson picked off Whitmer’s pass on the next UConn play, but Niklas Sade’s 44-yard FG attempt went wide right. N.C. College Park, Md. - Redshirt sophomores Lyle McCombs and Scott McCummings both ran for touchdowns, and senior Nick Williams re-turned a punt for another score as the University of Connecticut football team defeated Maryland 24-21 Saturday before a crowd of 35,491 at Byrd Stadium. Both teams are now 2-1 on the season. McCombs rushed for 94 yards and his fourth-quarter touchdown. McCummings, who also came in at quarterback occasionally, ran for a three-yardscorethatgavetheHuskiesa14-0first-halflead.ThatcameafterWilliamsscoredthegame’sfirsttouchdownona58-yardpuntreturn. Connecticut started quickly in going against their former coach, Randy Edsall, who left after 2010 to come to Maryland (2-1). The Huskies outgained Maryland 148-80 in total yardage in the firsthalfandcontrolledtheballfor18minutes,40seconds.Theyalsocame up with timely plays, converting four of nine third-down situations tokeeptheMarylandoffenseoffthefield. Connecticut opened the scoring on Williams’ 58-yard punt return, and redshirt junior Chad Christen’s extra point gave the Huskies a 7-0 leadwith7:05leftinthefirstquarter. Connecticut redshirt sophomore linebacker Yawin Smallwood sacked Hills and forced a third-quarter fumble that redshirt sophomore Angelo Pruitt recovered for the Huskies at the Maryland 23. Smallwood caused problems for the Terrapins throughout the game, with four of his 14 tackles going for losses, including three sacks. After a 75-yard drive, Maryland made it 17-14 on the second play of the fourth quarter when Hills threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Stefon Diggs on third-and-te. The Terrapins’ Marcus Leak tipped the pass and Diggs grabbed it for a touchdown to make it 17-14. The Huskies answered on their next possession, driving 76 yards to take a 24-14 lead on McCombs’ 11-yard touchdown run. Hills ran for a 10-yard touchdown that cut the Connecticut lead to 24-21 with 4:39 left. After getting the ball back following a Huskies punt, Maryland reached the Connecticut 39 before its drive stalled with 17 seconds left.

Kalamazoo, Mich. - Western Michigan quarterback Alex Carder threw for 237 yards and a touchdown to lead Western Michigan to a 30-24 win over the University of Connecticut on Saturday before a crowd of 10,328 at Waldo Stadium. Both teams are now 2-2 on the season. Carder completed 18 of 34 passes before leaving the game late in the third quarter after hitting his throwing hand on a helmet. Josh Schaffer caught six of Carder’s passes for 104 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown early in the third quarter that put Western Michigan ahead 24-7. UConn redshirt sophomore quarterback Chandler Whitmer was 28 of 44 for 333 yards passing and three touchdowns for Con-necticut. Redshirt sophomore Lyle McCombs rushed for 119 yards while redshirt sophomore Geremy Davis caught nine passes for 123 yards for the Huskies. Connecticut pulled within 24-17 on a two-yard pass from WhitmertoJohnDelahuntanda32-yardfieldgoalfromChadChristen midway through the fourth quarter. But on the Huskies’ next drive, Desmond Bozeman returned a Whitmer fumble 53 yards foratouchdown.ItwastheBroncos’firstfumblerecoveryforatouchdown in three years. EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - Running backs Lyle McCombs and Martin Hyppolite combined for 157 yards rushing and two touchdowns to lead the University of Connecticut football team to a 24-17 win over Buffalo on Saturday before a crowd of 34,666 at Rentschler Feld. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Chandler Whitmer, who completed passes to eight different receivers, threw for 227 yards and another score as UConn opened up a 24-7 lead in the third quarter and held on to win. Buffalo, which was playing without injured running back Branden Oliver, had the ball with a chance to tie late in the game, but failed to convert on fourth down at its own 39 yard line. Quarterback Alex Zordich threw for 220 yards and ran for 76 to lead the Bulls. UConn improved to 2-1 this season against the Mid-American conference. The Huskies beat Massachusetts in their season opener, but lost last week at Western Michigan. McCombs, UConn’s 166-pound tailback was the Huskies workhorse, carrying the ball 29 times for 97 yards. His two-yard fourth-down touch-downrungavetheHuskiesa24-7leadwithjustoverfiveminutesleftinthe third quarter. But Buffalo went into its bag of tricks to pull within 24-14. Zordich completedafour-yardpasstoAlexNeutzintherightflat,whothenpitchedthe ball to running back Brandon Murie. He raced down the right sideline, breaking a Byron Jones’ tackle on the way to a 50-yard touchdown. TheBullsgotwithinatouchdownona44-yardfieldgoalbyPatrickClarke with 2:23 left after a 43 yard pass from Zordich to Neutz. UConn redshirt sophomore wide receiver Geremy Davis recovered the onside kick, but UConn punted it away three plays later giving Buffalo one more chance to tie. But Zordich was stuffed by redshirt sophomore linebacker Yawin Smallwood after a two-yard gain on a fourth-and-four from the 39, and the Huskies ran out the clock. Connecticuthadbigplaysonback-to-backdrivesinthefirsthalftotakea17-7lead.TightendRyanGriffin’s36-yardcatchandrunoverthemiddleonthefirstplayofthesecondquartercappeda10-play92-yarddrive that gave the Huskies a 10-7 lead. Hyppolite, who had just four carries coming into the game, took apitchoutonhisfifthandwent50yardsofftherightsidefortheHuskiessecond touchdown. Connecticut moved the ball well from the opening kickoff. A 24-yard pass from Whitmer to senior wide receiver Nick Williams set up a 29-yard fieldgoalbyredshirtseniorChadChristenthatgavetheHuskiesa3-0lead. Buffalo responded with a 10 play, 75-yard drive that included a 30-yard screen pass to Devin Campbell on a fourth down that set up Murie’s 4-yard touchdown run. The Bulls special teams then stepped up, executing a successful onside kick, before the offense stalled. UConncameinrankedfifthinthenationagainsttherush,allowingjust 51 yards per game, but gave up 141 to the Bulls. Buffalo came into the game giving up 34 points a game.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - It just didn’t look like anything was improving on Saturday when the Huskies ran into 22nd-ranked Rutgers and absorbed a 19-3 setback in their Big East opener. The focus has been to improve the running game, but it was tougher early on when Whitmer and his teammates began the game without top runningbackLyleMcCombs,whosatforthefirstquarterforbreakingteam rules earlier in the week. Playing against a Rutgers team that leads the nation in rush defense, UConn wound up with 53 yards on 28 attempts, led by McCombs with 32 yards on 12 attempts. He came in averaging 90.4 yards per game. Despiteallitsoffensivewoes,whichincludedfiveturnovers,theHuskies might have pulled off the upset if it had taken advantage of its op-portunities. ShamarStephenblockedaRutgersfieldgoalattemptinthesecondquarter,whichledtotheHuskiesonlypoints,a19-yardfieldgoalbyChadChristen.ItwasthefirstblockedfieldgoalbyUConnsince2004. The Scarlet Knights (5-0, 2-0 Big East) are off to their best start since 2006, and they avenged a bitter loss to the Huskies that ended last regular season and kept Rutgers from sharing the conference title. Jawan Jamison ran it 28 times and recorded his sixth straight 100-yard game and Gary Nova hooked up with Mark Harrison on a 14-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter. Warren put it away with 3:44 left in the fourth when he grabbed a pass down the middle from Chandler Whitmer, and then darted through would-be-tacklers toward the end zone. Warren pushed across the goal line with some help from his team-mates. Sophomore quarterback Chandler Whitmer threw for 213 yards and a score for the Huskies. UConn is now 4-6 overall and 1-4 in the BIG EAST while Pittsburgh is also 4-6 and 1-4. Senior Nick Williams returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown. Tino Sunseri threw for 302 yards and two touchdowns for Pitt, whichfellshortinitsattempttoovercomea24-0halftimedeficit.ThePanthers, like UConn, must now win out to become bowl eligible. McCombs, who ran for more than 1,100 yards and seven touch-downs as a freshman, had just 547 yards and four scores coming into the game. He carried the ball 29 times in this one. The Huskies held Pitt running back Ray Graham to 41 yards on 15 carries after he rushed for 172 against Notre Dame a week ago in an overtime loss. UConn had a chance to put the game away after a 44-yard run set the Huskies up at the Pittsburgh 14, but Whitmer threw an interception in the end zone to end the threat. Sunseri took over and drove the Panthers 80 yards in just over two minutes, capped by an 18-yard touchdown pass to Mike Shanahan with 2:46 left. The Panthers never got the ball back as Whitmer hit redshirt sophomore Shakim Phillips for a key 17-yard completion on a third-and-9 on UConn’s next drive and the Huskies ran out the clock.

The Con-necticut cornerback just wanted to make sure he was in the right position to make a play. Wilson’sfirstinterceptionoftheseasoncameinthethirdovertimeSaturday and helped the Huskies upset No. 19 Louisville by a 23-20 score before a crowd of 45,618 at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium. OnthirdandgoalfromConnecticut’sfive,LouisvillequarterbackTeddy Bridgewater looked for DeVante Parker in the end zone. His pass was slightly behind his receiver and Wreh-Wilson, one of the top cornerbacks in the country, read it perfectly to make the pickoff. It was nearly a storybook comeback for Bridgewater, who sustained a broken left wrist on a second-quarter sack by redshirt senior linebacker Sio Moore and sat out most of the third quarter. The sophomore returned to lead Louisville’s fourth-quarter rally and force overtime with a six-yard touch-down pass to Parker with 21 seconds remaining in regulation. For Connecticut, that was nothing new. The Huskies entered the game with the nation’s ninth-ranked defense and was No. 11 against the run at 108 yards allowed per game. They applied those strengths early and often against the Cardinals, who had the conference’s top scoring offense.
