A Unique World-First Technological ConceptGottwald ASC Automated Stacking Cranes
ASC Automated Stacking CranesSignificantly Increasing Productivity
Worldwide container traffic is growing:tonnage, vessels and cargo-handlingvolumes are increasing. This meansthat terminal operators face majorlogistical challenges: boosting theproductivity of their terminals whileexpanding existing terminal infra-structures and building new ones.
Environmental issues are also gainingin importance. Not only should theequipment achieve a high level ofperformance, it must also be environ-mentally friendly a requirement, forexample, when terminal concessionsare awarded.
Innovative Solutions Are inDemandThe increasing demand for innovativecontainer-handling equipment andsystems must demonstrate: high stacking density, optimum
use of space high working speeds,
high handling rates crane and system
software, maximum efficiency
drive technology that makes efficient use of resources.
Focus on AutomationThese requirements put the spotlighton automating terminal logistics. Theessential benefits are: improved productivity lower labour and operating costs greater degree of safety dependable operation, in nearly
all weathers.

Automated handling equipment, like the
worlds first Gottwald ASCs at Antwerp Gateway
in Belgium
and entire fleets of AGVs, as used atContainer-Terminal Altenwerder in Hamburg,Germany, among other locations, as unmanned,computer-controlled container transporters
Gottwald: Leading Innovation in Automated Cargo Handling Well-known as the worlds marketleader in Mobile Harbour Cranes,Gottwald is also the pacesetter in the automation of terminal logistics not just in Automated GuidedVehicles (AGVs), which have provedtheir worth as computer-controlledcontainer transporters with respectedterminal operators for many years.
ASC Automated Stacking CranesGottwald now continues its innovative
leadership role in the fieldof automation
technology with its ASC, combinedwith Gottwalds own dedicated management software (ASC-MS), toenable fully-automated managementof container stackyards and seamlessintegration of quayside and landsidevehicles.
Together with the AGVs, the ASCsform fully-automated, integrated system solutions from the quaysideto the stackyard. Or they replace conventional stacking cranes andstraddle carriers or work on thequayside in conjunction with existingfleets of straddle carriers.
The Benefits of ASC TechnologyMaximum utilisation of space andstacking density thanks to: Twin ASCs on a single pair of rails 1-over-5 solution for high-cube
containers.
Accurate positioning even at highwinds of up to force 10 Beaufortascribable to: rigidity in all three axes, which is
a result of the fixed-leg concept and rigid guiding beam.
Innovative systems including: management anti-collision and innovative brake system.
Strong PartnersTerminal operators need strong partners. Gottwald is a member of the Demag Cranes Group, one of the world's leading providers ofindustrial cranes, crane components, harbour cranes and port automationtechnology.
This includes state-of-the-art simulationand emulation technologies to helpterminal operators in making soundinvestment decisions based on a realistic view of the terminal structuresand performance before they committhemselves.

Gottwald ASCs are in demand wherever terminal operators requiresignificant increases in stacking density and productivity.
The groundbreaking technologicalconcept stands out both visually andin terms of its pioneering approach,as witnessed by the rigid, verticalguiding beam. Of proven capability in daily operation, these machinesmake full use of the reliable structuraldesign, control engineering and safety-related components that have beenfield-tested in existing Gottwald portalcranes. This equipment guarantees: fast accurate safe ecologically-sound operation.
Maximum Use of SpaceEach stack module uses two ASCs,or Twin ASCs, running on a singlepair of rails. This configuration allowsterminal operators to save a signif-icant amount of space up to 18%compared to other well-known con-figurations such as cross-over systems, and yet allows for redundancy ineach stack module, a requirementthat customers demand.
Storage and retrieval frequencies and container dwell time in the stack are the key factors when defining the span, which is between8 and 11 containers, where the stackyard length is typically between35 and 50 TEUs.
High Working SpeedsExceptionally high working speeds in all three axes (crane and trolleytravel and hoisting action), coupledwith redundancy and the opportunityto run in parallel in the most compactspace are just some of the uniquefeatures that increase terminal performance.
Storage and RetrievalQuayside storage and retrieval operations in conjunction with manual or automated transport vehicles are fully-automated. Theunique anti-collision system has even been approved by the safetyauthorities to allow simultaneousoperation of our ASCs and manual transport vehicles such as straddlecarriers in the interchange zone.
For landside storage and removal in conjunction with a railway link or road trucks, Gottwalds ASCs are equipped with an innovativecamera based semi-automated system.

Traffic lights control safe accessfor straddle carriers
Redundancy creates safety: interchangezones on the quayside and landside fourTEUs end-to-end. If the quayside ASC should, for some reason, not be in operation, it willmove to its end position and allow thelandside ASC to take over its work load.
Approved by safety authorities: simultaneous operation of Gottwald ASCsand manual straddle carriers in the quaysideinterchange zone
Robust and Economical thanks to the Fixed-Leg Concept Gottwald's ASCs are sturdy portalcranes designed as fixed-leg, box-girder constructions. Together withthe intelligent brake system, theyguarantee these features: optimised transmission of forces
into the rails and rail foundations much reduced horizontal forces
mean lower investments in rails and rail foundations.

6Committed to the Environment All the electrical ASC drives are supplied with electricity from the terminal's own supply. As a result, no exhaust gas or noise emissions
from on-board power units energy generated from braking
and work motions is returned to the terminal's power network.
These machines make a positive contribution to a terminal's ecologyrating.
Vibration-Free thanks to the Rigid Guiding BeamTotally new concept in the industry:rigid guiding beam instead of ropefields which tend to sway. Moved bypowerful four-rope hoists and guidedby rollers to provide: fast, accurate positioning under all
loading conditions and in winds up to force 10 Beaufort
fast corrections at road truck interchange
long rope lifetimes: multiple rope deflections not needed, no rope adjustments.

TheCE certificateissued by GottwaldPort Technology covers the
entire stack moduleincluding ASCs, reefersand interchange zones.
New Brake System Fast, Safe,Precise and EconomicalGottwald's intelligent brake systemacts directly on the rail. The numberof brake pads actually applied dependson the position of the trolley and theweight suspended on the spreader.
Shorter braking distances translatenot only into improved handling performance, this braking systemalso minimises the horizontal forces, which means lower investment in the rails and their infrastructure.
Thanks to the large-format brake pads, this innovative system also acts as: a storm brake and an emergency brake with very
short emergency stop distances.
7Innovative Camera System forLandside Container HandlingFor landside container handling, the ASC travels to the edge of theinterchange zone. After that, thecrane is taken over by the controlcentre. Thanks to the innovative camera system, the container can be accurately deposited semi-auto-matically on the road truck. Theorder is reversed if the container is to be moved from the truck to thestackyard.
