The 2009-2010 Bruins (Left to Right): Taylor Travis, Bobby Lange, Mario Clemens, Coach Derek Freeman, Pontus
Widegren, Pedro Figueiredo, Alex Shi Yup Kim, Beau Schoolcraft, Gregor Main, Connor
Driscoll and Coach Ryan Ressa
Words from Coach Freeman To our Bruin Golf Family- The 2009 Fall season was an opportunity for our freshman to get accustomed to life at UCLA. By design, we scheduled only two events, allowing our young team to ease into the school year, focus on academics, and work on technical areas in their golf games. We finished fourth in both fall events, The Prestige at PGA West and The Gifford Collegiate Champion-ship. Most importantly, we put ourselves in position to win each tournament. We played very well at times and not so well at others, learning from each round, which gives us a lot to look forward to in the spring. We saw great things from several players this fall. Pedro “Figgy” Figueiredo finished second and eighth in his first two events at UCLA. Pontus “PW” Widegren finished tied for third at CordeValle. Gregor “G Money” Main continued his solid play and was two rounds away from playing very well. Alex “Shi Yup or Chip” Kim has his strongest quarter at UCLA with a 72.6 scoring average. We are looking for Connor “Diggs” Driscoll, Mario “MC Hammer” Clemens, Bobby “Bob” Lange, Taylor “TT” Travis, and Beau “Schooly” Schoolcraft to give us the needed competition and depth to win events this coming spring. We have a great tournament schedule in 2010 and hope you can make it out to watch. All the best and 212! Go Bruins!
The Bruins decided to go light in competition this fall. By competing in only two events, the young Bruins were able to focus on fun-damental training and aca-demics.
The fall began in La Quinta, CA at PGA West. The tour-nament was held on the famed Stadium course and was set up similar to the PGA Tour Qualifying School. After the first round, the Bruins found themselves on top of the leader board at 8-under par. The final two rounds showed the youth as
the team backed up into fourth place. Finishing be-hind top teams TCU, Stan-ford, and Washington. Pedro Figueiredo fired 69-71-70 to lead the charge in his first event as a Bruin to a second place finish at six-under par.
In November, The Gifford Collegiate Championship at CordeValle was hosted by UCLA. Again, there were flashes of greatness during the tournament. However, having the top two teams in the country, Oklahoma State and Stanford playing well,
there was little room for error. With six holes to play in the final round, the Bruins found themselves within two shots of the lead. In the end, too many mistakes cost them and eventually they had to settle for a fourth place finish. Freshman, Pontus Widegren, had his best fall finish of third. He fired rounds of 72-69-67 (8-under).
The Bruins finished the fall ranked 13th in the country.
country. Each has been suc-cessful on the junior circuit." Said Coach Freeman
"The signing of these two outstanding young men dem-onstrates the importance of bringing the best players from California to UCLA," Freeman continued. "Both Patrick and Anton had a lot of college options athleti-cally and academically.
We are proud to announce the signing of two local junior golfers, who will at-tend UCLA in the Fall of 2010. Anton Arboleda and Patrick Cantlay, both 17, are ranked among the na-tion's top 50 prep amateurs and are veterans of the junior circuit. "Both are ex-perienced junior players, who have participated in tournaments all over the
We're very excited that they chose to become Bru-ins.”
Patrick and Anton will add immediate depth to an al-ready young Bruin lineup in the 2010 season. We are excited to have them on board!

a day at the TaylorMade Kingdom to get any equip-ment issues taken care of before the year began. On Saturday, the team watched the Bruins beat Kansas State at the Rosebowl. After the game, the team headed to San Luis Obispo.
The next morning gave rise to an unbelievable obstacle and ropes course that the players had to overcome all fears to become successful. Being a young team with four fresh-
man, this was the first oppor-tunity for some of the players to trust and believe in one another. For the Bruins, there was no better way to begin the year. The second day in SLO began with a morning sea kayak in Morro Bay watching wildlife and having lunch on the beach. The after-noon was a full hike up to Bishop’s Peak. After all the challenges and fun during the trip, the team headed back to campus to begin the fall.
2009 Team Retreat The coaches decided to have a different team retreat this year. Instead of traveling to have intense practice and play, the team went on a multi-day, multi-city retreat for some team building excercises and loads of fun.
The Bruins arrived in West-wood on September 17th to attend a full day of required meetings that are not enjoy-able, but are necessary. The following day, the vans headed down to Carlsbad for

The depth of talent coming out of Westwood is appar-ent when you look through the recent Qualifying school results. In addition to the eight former Bruins with status on the PGA Tour, there were a number of Bruins competing in Q-school.
Five former Bruin players advanced into the second stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying School. 2008 Individual Champion, Kevin Chappell advanced, as well as Chris Heintz, Daniel Im, Jason Kang, and Lucas Lee.
Unfortunately, all five missed making the final stage of qualifying school. Daniel Im, Jason Kang, and Lucas Lee will continue to play on the Canadian Tour and try to qualify for spe-cific events on the Nation-wide and PGA Tours. Kevin Chappell will be playing on the Nationwide Tour full-time next year with hopes of getting some starts on the PGA Tour.
Brandt Jobe was the lone Bruin to make it into final stage. Jobe played the six-round qualifying at three-
under par which gave him a full Nationwide Tour card. PGA Tour veteran, Tom Per-nice, Jr., competed as well. He fired a eight-under par. Pernice will have status on the PGA Tour and the Champions Tour, due to the win at the SAS Champion-ship.
