Click here UCEAP & INTERNATIONAL CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OF EXCHANGE In celebration of 50 years of partnership between UCEAP and International Christian University (ICU) , a delegation of UCEAP faculty & staff were invited to attend three days of events at the beautiful ICU campus outside of Tokyo. The delegation included Associate Vice Provost and Executive Director Jean-Xavier Guinard, UCSB EAP Director Prof. Juan E. Campo, Regional Director Mary McMahon, Reciprocity Director Paulette Greisner, and Director's Office Sr. Analyst Briana Sapp. The three campus advisors for Japan who recruited the most students in 2012-13 were also invited to attend: Angie Platt (UCLA), Kim Henne (UCI) and Emily Tom-Atzberger (UCSB). The celebratory events included several lectures, ceremonies, receptions and tours. To see photos of the events, please click here . CHERRY TREE PLANTING CEREMONY Since ICU's founding in 1953, over 100 cherry trees have lined the entrance to the campus. These trees are an important symbol of peace and have grown strong as ICU has blossomed over the years. To commemorate UCEAP and ICU's 50th anniversary, a new cherry tree was planted by ICU President Junko Hibiya and UCEAP Associate Vice Provost and Executive Director Jean-Xavier Guinard.

SYMPOSIUM: "STUDY ABROAD & ACADEMIC INTEGRATION"The second day of events included anopen symposium to discuss theimportance of academic integration instudy abroad, and featured discussionswith several faculty including: Prof. Juan E. Campo (UCSB), Prof.Junko Ito (UC Tokyo/UCSC), Prof. EllisS. Krauss (Meiji Gakuin/UCSD), Prof.Chia-ning Chang (UC Shanghai/UCD),Prof. Natsumi Ikoma (ICU), Dean ShaunMalarney (ICU), Prof. MisuhiroYoshimoto (Waseda University) andProf. Sachihiko Kondo (Osaka University).

ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION ON THE FUTURE OF UC & ICUCOLLABORATIONOn the third day, a round tablediscussion was held between UCEAPand ICU faculty and staff to discussimportant topics to move the UCEAPand ICU partnership forward. This included increased internshipopportunities, perspectives from UCcampus advisors and ICU internationalstudent staff, reciprocity students, andvisiting professorships.

 His lecture, entitled "The Science of Taste & Smell" presented his research on thesensory properties of foods and beverages, how humans perceive them, and how theyaffect food choice, food intake, and consumer behavior. The audience was invited tocompare French and American wines as well as three types of chocolate.

ANNIVERSARY LECTURE: "SCIENCE OF TASTE & SMELL"As a rare treat, the ICU and UCEAPdelegations were invited to attend alecture given by UCEAP Associate ViceProvost and Executive Director Jean-Xavier Guinard, who is also a professorof Sensory Science at UC Davis.

UCEAP & ICU ALUMNI GATHER TO CELEBRATE 50 YEARSOn June 26th, over 150 alumni, faculty, staff, andstudents from both UC and ICU gathered tocelebrate 50 years of exchange and partnership.The reception included several speeches fromprominent alumni as well as President Junko Hibiyaand UCEAP Associate Vice Provost and ExecutiveDirector Jean-Xavier Guinard. A lavish spread of traditional Japanese cuisine wasenjoyed while old and new acquaintancesdiscussed their experiences in California andJapan.

UCEAP MEETS WITH STUDENTS AT DOSHISHA UNIVERSITYWhile in Japan, the UCEAP delegation took theopportunity to travel to Kyoto to host a lunchreception for current UC students studying atDoshisha University.  The students shared their excitement for Kyoto andthe many differences they've noticed betweenCalifornia and Japan. The delegation also had the pleasure to meet withuniversity officials and enjoyed a campus tour.

STUDY ABROAD SYMPOSIUM AT OSAKA UNIVERSITYAt Osaka University, the UCEAP delegation wastreated to an extensive campus tour, including the

incredibly impressive and state-of-the-artlaboratories where UC students participating in theFrontier Lab program are able to work alongsideaward-winning researchers in fields ranging frombiotechnology to photon science. The delegationalso toured the J-ShIP and Maple programs forintensive Japanese and visited a few classroomswith UC students. Next, AVP/ED Guinard shared his sensory scienceresearch with current UC and Osaka University faculty, staff and students. His lecture was followedby a presentation by former Vice President Prof. Tsuji as well as a UC Berkeley alumna nowworking in Osaka and a recently-returned Osaka University reciprocity student. The visit concluded with an elegant dinner hosted by Osaka University.
