STRATEGIC CONTEXTThe UCD Clinical Research Centre is an academic-led, multi-site, patient-focused resource supporting clinical and translational research. It operates under a single integrated governance structure within the UCD School of Medicine & Medical Science. It has been created to deliver one of the University’s strategic objectives of advancing high quality, impactful clinical and translational research. The centre is also responsible for delivering high quality education programmes to serve future academic and industry staffing needs. The UCD Clinical Research Centre has two modern purpose-built facilities, at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and at St Vincent’s University Hospital. Together, these two hospitals serve the healthcare needs of approximately 1 million people in the Dublin area and act as local, regional and national referral centres for a host of clinical specialties. With the creation of the Ireland East Hospital Group (IEHG) (which comprises eleven hospitals in the East Leinster region), the UCD Clinical Research Centre will expand to provide the same research supports across the region, to deliver the benefits of participation in clinical and translation research to our patients. The UCD Clinical Research Centre is at the core of the UCD/IEHG Academic Health Sciences research and innovation strategy and will provide a focal point for collaborative, multidisciplinary patient-focused research. The centre links the clinical community to core university research institutes including the UCD Conway Institute, Systems Biology Ireland, the UCD Charles Institute of Dermatology and ARCH. Our reputation for implementing complex clinical research programmes across multiple sites to the highest ethical, regulatory and scientific standards positions the UCD CRC ideally to enable and drive a wider academic health sciences collaboration.

SUPPORTING EXCELLENCE IN TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH

In the first five years of its operations, the UCD Clinical Research Centre has assisted 67 principal investigators with 160 clinical research projects comprising over 32,000 patient contacts. We have developed a comprehensive physical infrastructure and implemented externally audited procedures. We have retained a cohort of 12 professional staff who are available to investigators on an ‘as required’ basis, minimising the cost of investigations and maximizing the effectiveness and impact of the investigators’ research funding. The deployment of the resource across several projects ensures that experience gained in one study can benefit research led by other investigators.

The UCD Clinical Research Centre will build on its strong track record to date to further enhance clinical and translational research activity across the wider IEHG Network. Specifically we will:

Support University and Hospital research priority domains as required

Enable investigators to leverage additional grant income, in particular targeting EU Horizon 2020 programmes and major national funding schemes

Further develop and expand biobank infrastructure at current and new sites

Strengthen industry partnerships in clinical and translational research

Expand core biomarker validation laboratory

To date, we have supported clinical trial activity across 10 hospitals. Our current study portfolio includes 36 industry sponsored clinical trials (19 phase II, 15 phase III, 2 phase IV), 10 investigator-initiated clinical trials and 38 translational and observational research studies. These studies now account for an average of 5,300 patient contacts per annum.

Create a dedicated clinical trials team, who will complete and manage both commercial and investigator initiated clinical trials

Make key appointments in quality and regulatory affairs, business development, research pharmacy, research nursing and data management

Provide training in clinical trials for all staff members, including ICH-GCP and manage network-wide training records

Develop enhanced site management capabilities in conjunction with external partners

Enhance the investigator initiated clinical trial activity within the network by supporting all stages of trial roll out

Develop a plan for the establishment of a dedicated clinical pharmacology unit, including business case development, staffing plans and oversight

Support Investigators to leverage additional clinical trial income through the Health Research Board’s dedicated clinical trial funding schemes
