Thank you for everything you have done for your law school. Every law school trains students to become advocates and counselors. The better law schools confer a credential with prestige. The best law schools create a sense of community that serves alumni well long after they have finished on campus.

University of California Hastings College of the Law, the first law school of the American West, has been a leading institution since it opened its doors. For most of our history, we benefited from significant levels of state support. Now, we must reinvent ourselves by competing in a dynamic marketplace.

Our strategic plan will guide us in everything that we do. In order to implement this new vision of legal education, we will need help. Though Brian Johnson ’80 graduated from UC Hastings more than 30 years ago, the accomplished attorney—who heads the litigation department of Strong & Hanni in Salt Lake City—can still relate to today’s law students. From the profound impact that professors can have on a student’s life to the way the first year, as Johnson puts it, “forever burns itself into your brain,” many things haven’t changed.

But one salient difference between then and now is the cost of a legal education. While on sabbatical from practicing law, Johnson joined the law faculties of the University of Oklahoma and the University of Tulsa. As a professor, he saw firsthand the financial struggles that many law students face today.

“Many students incurred almost crushing debt to pursue their dreams,” says Johnson. “I recollected how relatively inexpensive—and incredibly rewarding—my education at Hastings was. So I decided to help.”

In September 2010, Johnson pledged a $100,000 gift to UC Hastings to establish the Jill Sant Johnson Scholarship. Johnson named the scholarship after Jill Sant Johnson, whose hard work and support in large part made his graduation from law school possible. “Law school is competitive enough without outside distractions,” Johnson says. “Here’s hoping that some students’ burdens are eased a little.”

It is all too easy for law school grads to get discouraged from pursuing public service careers. Many public service organizations don’t have funds for attorneys, and the ones that do typically pay modest salaries. That’s why in 1997 UC Hastings created the Ralph S. Abascal ’68 Fellowship, which is given to a recent UC Hastings grad to support his or her work with underserved communities. Now, with a generous cy pres award to fund the fellowship, UC Hastings can continue making these vital opportunities possible.

A cy pres award adds vital funds to the Abascal Fellowship

fellowship. These funds, awarded in In re Apple iPod Nano Cases, will help UC Hastings achieve its goal of granting the Abascal Fellowship on a yearly basis (it is currently offered biennially). The fellowship is named in honor of Ralph Santiago Abascal, a pioneering legal services lawyer who won landmark decisions in the 1970s on behalf of farm workers, welfare recipients and undocumented immigrants.

“We are honored and thrilled to receive these funds,” says Sari Zimmerman, assistant dean for the Office of Career & Professional Development. “The students who want to do public service are so passionate that it’s not an exaggeration to say that this award can make dreams come true.”

T he value of a UC Hastings degree is immeasurable in today’s marketplace. Given the

decline in state funding across the UC system, it is imperative—as a member of the

UC Hastings community—that I give back to ensure for others the same opportunities

that I was afforded. The value of a degree is only as strong as the institution itself. With

the College receiving less than 10 percent of its operating budget from the state, it is

The Law Firm Challenge encourages alumni at law firms and organizations with five or more UC Hastings graduates to reconnect with their alma mater and promote giving in a fun and challenging way. Within each law firm, volunteer representatives take the lead in inspiring their UC Hastings colleagues to join together and meet the 100 percent giving challenge.

By participating in the Challenge, graduates help UC Hastings raise essential funds, increase overall alumni giving participation, strengthen the UC Hastings alumni network and enhance the profile of the graduates’ own law firm and organization.
