ORANA ANNUAL REPORT 2015/16
I ’m happy to report that our results for the 2016 financial
year have been very positive both in a financial sense and
from the main perspective of building a better organisation
to support our clients.
During the year we conducted a families and carer’s survey
which highlighted that we have caring staff and that the
needs of clients are well catered. This is a gratifying result as
Orana has set in place a focussed and continuous emphasis
on being a person centred organisation which four out of
five respondents believed to be true. However, we recognise
we can always do better. Hence we have developed a plan to
address issues that require improvement to ensure we provide
excellence to every one of our clients in residential support.
Our employees also responded very positively to the survey
with regard to working in our eight employment centres.
Security of work and opportunities to try different jobs were
the predominant concerns. Our direction to set up centres
of expertise in each centre to improve open employment
opportunities and viability and offer services to a wider
customer base so that we aren’t at the mercy of one customer
is necessary to provide stability, but it does limit the range
of jobs. The Board is very mindful of the need to balance
revenue streams, productivity and skill development to fulfil
the mission of Orana to be viable and to offer choices to
people with disability. Orana needs customers and employees
in order to succeed; hence decisions are made in light of the
current hard times in manufacturing, job opportunities in
open employment and anticipated funding changes to be
introduced with the NDIS.
During the year we farewelled Michelle Nardelli from the
Board and welcomed Arnie Narayan and Andrew Berg.
Michelle was the former chair of the marketing subcommittee
and I thank her for her four years of service to Orana.
Our next planned change involves moving Orana from a South
Australian Incorporated Association to a Company Limited by
Guarantee. This will not change our status as a charity, but it
will allow us to consider operations and partnerships at the
national level, particularly in a time where there are significant
national reforms being implemented across Australia requiring
a national approach. Preparedness as a Company Limited by
Guarantee will readily allow us to establish new opportunities
with other like-minded entities. As we operate services
along the river Murray and in Mount Gambier we have been
provided opportunities to take on organisations in NSW
and VIC. Moving to a new legal structure will enable future
opportunities not be missed where they provide a sound
business decision. A future general meeting of the members
will be held to discuss and vote on such a change.
Orana has set in place a focussed and continuous emphasis on being a person centred organisation
On behalf of the Board I thank the chief executive and
management team in leading the changes to the organisation
during the year. We operate in a dynamic environment
and require our managers and staff to embrace change.
Continuous improvement is how Orana will be acclaimed for
excellence in services to people with a disability.

beyond and are equipped to ensure that people with disability
have choice and the opportunity to control their own life.
Over the 65 years the disability sector has seen radical
changes, in particular transforming service delivery. However
it would appear that our vision of supporting people living
with disability is still remarkably similar to that of our founding
members. Over the next decade the NDIS will enable disability
service providers like Orana to create new opportunities
for people living with disability underscoring the vision of a
person centred service, envisaged by our founding members
for their children, all those years ago.
The organisation celebrated its 65th year of providing services to the South Australian community
In order to meet the demand for services and to be
competitive in a growing market place, Orana’s Board and
Executive Team recognised the importance of strengthening
Orana’s brand within the South Australian community.
Early this year in response to this, a branding campaign was
initiated to increase community awareness of Orana’s services
for people living with disability. The campaign included the
development of a commercial which was aired on television,
online and cinema, promoting services that typify Orana’s
vision of social inclusion and person centredness.
The first television commercial featured one of Orana’s
employees, Jamie, representing an Orana employee living with
disability, on a typical day. It highlighted Jamie’s independence
through employment in one of Orana’s nine business services
across the state.
The second featured Natalie, demonstrating how well trained
Client Coaches in Orana’s Accommodation Services support
people living with disability to live independently within their
own home, and the wider community.
CEO’S REP RTNICK MIHALARAS
This has been a commemorative year for Orana, as
the organisation celebrated its 65th year of providing
services to the South Australian community and
launched our ‘refreshed’ brand on the 10th August 2015.
It all began in 1950 with a group of committed parents
starting a journey which led to the formation of Orana
Incorporated. Everything they did, every dollar raised, was for
their children to have greater opportunities in life. This put
people we support at the heart of what we do.
Over the last six and a half decades Orana has seen
significant changes in the disability sector. These changes
have included the closing down of institutionalised care
facilities, the transition from sheltered workshops to supported
employment, increased community inclusion for people living
with disability and a focus on person centred support. Now,
the disability sector is on the verge of the most significant
change to date, the full implementation of the National
Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
The NDIS will provide individuals living with disability and
their families, the ability to select the disability support
services they wish to engage and how they will allocate their
funding. They will be able to pursue value for the services they
require, have ample support options to choose from including
accommodation and employment opportunities and engage
their preferred service providers. This will increase competition
across disability support agencies and, it is anticipated, see
the introduction of many new organisations offering a wider
range of services to people living with disability.
Orana recognises the challenges which the NDIS presents
and we have positioned ourselves accordingly. We have
strengthened our position in readiness for the NDIS and

ORANA ANNUAL REPORT 2015/16
I would like to take this opportunity to thank both Jamie and
Natalie for their enthusiasm and patience throughout filming.
In late 2015 early 2016 Orana acquired retail enterprises
including the Orana Lotto and Newsagency, based in Port
Augusta and the Orana Op Shops, located in Christie Downs,
Goodwood and Seacombe Gardens. These new services have
proven to be great vehicles for raising Orana’s profile within
their local communities.
Orana has continued to build strong relationships with old
and new organisations and businesses in order to achieve our
objectives. Both corporate and community partnerships enable
Orana to create new opportunities for people living with
disability to live the lives of their choosing.
Our corporate partners have supported Orana’s growth
over the last 12 months and continue to play a vital role in
our support of people living with disability. Without strong
business partnerships we would not be able to provide the
employment opportunities that enable people living with
disability to work in their local communities, develop new
skills, and make a meaningful contribution to society.
Orana is also grateful to our key partners for their support of
events, fundraising initiatives, gift-in-kind, pro-bono support
and financial contributions. Thank you to Mitsubishi Motors
Australia, Bickford’s Australia, Kingston Estate Wines, RACV
Salary Solutions, Rotary and the Rapid Relief Team for their
ongoing support.
We are proud to be in our seventh year as partner of Special
Olympics SA, which not only supports Orana clients but
hundreds of young people with disability across the state to
participate in sporting and social activities encouraging healthy
living, friendships, personal growth and development.
Furthermore, I take this opportunity to thank the Orana Board
for their generosity in giving of their time and sharing their
wealth of knowledge and experience for the ongoing benefit
of the organisation. The leadership of the President, Bill Filmer
has provided stability and good governance, two areas vital in
the current turbulent environment of transitioning from a fully
funded system to an NDIS.
On behalf of Orana’s Board, management, staff and clients, I
sincerely thank all of our corporate and community partners
for their ongoing support and commitment to Orana and its
mission of supporting people living with disability.
To our staff and employees, I would like to personally thank
you for your dedication, skill, commitment and caring nature,
which is so vital in this industry. I have also appreciated your
patience in adapting to the myriad of changes in preparing
the organisation for the new NDIS environment, and not
forgetting the support to our clients and employees in moving
into the new system.
Lastly, none of this would be possible without the generosity
of our donors, supportive customers, wonderful volunteers
and Friends of Orana. Your support throughout 2015-2016
assisted Orana to provide our clients with the opportunities
to engage in meaningful employment, be active members of
their communities and live independent lives.
There have been challenges, opportunities and changes
throughout 2015-2016, and there will be more over the next
few years. Whatever goals we set ourselves to achieve, we
must ensure that people with disability remain at the core of
all that we do.
