Vice Provost Susan Kalina Report
o Sandra Pence, Jacqueline Cason and Brian Partridge will be attending the AAC&U
General Education Conference on February 28. OAA will be working with them to
schedule and prepare for the conference.
o GER Assessment
OAA has resources related to GER Assessment that the Task Force might be
interested in, and is welcome to check these resources out from Maria Stroth
in ADM 218. The materials include two of UAA’s earliest reports on
assessing the GERs from 1998 and 1999.. A resource list will be posted on
the Task Force website.
o Provost Search
The final Provost candidate, Bear Baker, will be on campus Monday-
Wednesday, November 19-21.
New Business
E-Portfolio conversation and report
o What was your sense of the ePortfolio conversation, how might we include them in
what we’re doing here?
ePortfolios are helpful for General Education, but it would be best if the
institution has one platform.
How are other schools using ePortfolios?
Bowling Green State University is using ePortfolios for assessment of
student learning outcomes.
o Student’s work can be tracked from their Freshman to Senior
year, which is helpful for assessment of student learning
outcomes.
Kodiak College is already using Blackboard for ePortfolios.
How would ePortfolios be assessed?
Departments would put this in their assessment plan
o If this committee knows their needs from ePortfolios, it’s encouraged that they
communicate those needs with the university community.

o The Task Force agreed to consult the Natural Sciences regarding assessment GER
labs.
Task Force Communication Plan: Fall and Spring
o How will we communicate our ideas and discussions to the university community?
The Task Force will host focus groups for students, faculty, etc., to get advice
from those directly impacted.
It will be important to include Student Affairs.
Spring 2013 Plan of Action
o Review of the Hanover Report
The Task Force will read and review the report once it’s received and then
decide how it wants to move forward.
It might be a good idea to break into subgroups.
o Once the Task Force has more focused ideas about the research, they will begin to
facilitate focus groups.
Should there be a faculty survey about assessment to determine the attitudes toward
assessment on campus?
o The Task Force agreed that this is outside their purview and would be a task for the
Faculty Senate Academic Assessment Committee.
Continuing Business
Hanover Research Project—Report will be delivered in early December.
Continued Discussion of GER Assessment Practices we have reviewed
Next Meeting
After the Hanover Research Project report is received, OAA will send out a Doodle poll to
determine the next meeting time.
OAA will create a website for the Task Force off of the Governance site.
The Task Force discussed sending out a message to the faculty and staff dynamic listerves
detailing their work so far.
