Objectives of every U10 Coach • protect the safety of our players • develop fundamental individual skills : conditioning, ball control, sportsmanship, etc. • develop complex team skills : positioning, communication, teamwork, etc. • sustain a fun environment that fosters enjoyment of the game

MYSA & NVYSL define U10 as “non-outcome based” • game scores are tracked by NVYSL but are not published to the public • there are no standings, playoffs or post-season tournaments • U10 soccer is not about wins and losses

U10 soccer is “developmental” with “competitive” undertones • developmental soccer captures emerging talent and improves individual & team skill • competitive soccer focuses on achieving success against the strongest opponents • U10 soccer navigates the delicate balance between Recreation vs. Competition

How do YOU Measure the Success of a Season?

Recreational Coaches measure Success via FUN • loosely structured skills drills around fun activities •positive reinforcement during practice & games •no mention of winning/losing or season record

Competitive Coaches measure Success via WINS •structured practices based on intensely targeted skill drills •positive & negative reinforcement during practices & games •attention to winning/losing and end-of-season record

NVYSL measures success by BALANCED COMPETITION across Teams & Flights •evaluate team strength, and assign teams with comparable strength into balanced flights •monitor competitive balance throughout the season, alter assignments when necessary

NVYSL Strives for Balanced Competition

Competitive Balance

ALL Season

MID Season

PRE Season

PRE-SEASON : Flight Assignments • build competitively balanced groups

based on metrics of team strength

MID-SEASON : Adjustments • adjust flight assignments to correct for

competitive imbalance

ALL-SEASON : Sportsmanship • despite our best efforts, there will be

occasional mismatches between opponents

• Coaches must make smart decisions to protect sportsmanship by preventing excessive scoring (goal differential >6)

• dominant Coach should diagnose the problem early and implement aggressive countermeasures by 4 goals

1 2 3 4 5 6 7

11. SPECTATOR BEHAVIOR is the Coach’s responsibility • instruct spectators to applaud both teams for playing the game well • remind spectators to refrain from sideline “coaching” directed at their player or any other • discourage spectators from making disparaging comments about any Player, Coach or Referee

12. Set a GOOD EXAMPLE : actions speak louder than words • Players & Spectators take their cues from you • insist that your players abide by the rules of the game and play the game with dignity and respect • encourage your team to congratulate opposing players & the Referee at the end of the game

13. Manage your game to achieve BALANCED SCORING • guard against excessive scoring (goal differential >6), which can demoralize the losing team • ~5% of BU10 games and ~4% of GU10 games suffered from excessive scoring in Spring 2015 • excessive scoring may indicate problems with competitive balance and improper team assignment

... NVYSL will work to resolve • however, excessive scoring may also indicate poor sportsmanship ... NVYSL will investigate

14. Manage your bench to achieve BALANCED PLAYING TIME • NVYSL expects that U10 players will be afforded an opportunity to play at least 50% of every game

15. Have you digested the NVYSL ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY?

• remember that U10 navigates a balance between Recreational vs. Competitive soccer • consider that the experience we create for our U10 Referees is equally important as the

experience we create for our U10 Players • understand that U10 Referees may be young or inexperienced • protect the ability for our U10 Referees to develop skills in a non-competitive setting • Mistreatment of Referees attacks the integrity of our league, and will never be tolerated...

U10 Coaches are our 1st line of defense!

Remember that U10 soccer in MYSA & NVYSL is “non-outcome based” • U10 soccer is not about wins and losses • game scores are tracked by NVYSL but not published • U10 scores are carefully scrutinized to evaluate appropriateness of team assignments

Verify the final score before leaving the field • immediately upon completion of the game, obtain the final score from the Referee • confirm this final score with the opposing Coach • both teams independently report a final score, so eliminate discrepancies before you leave the field

Understand your Club’s policies & procedures for score reporting • identify your designated Club Score Reporter • report your score to your Club Score Reporter immediately after completion of your game • Club Score Reporter enters scores into the NVYSL database • failure to enter scores by midnight on the following Monday results in a $25 fine per week

Game Cancellations are rare and extreme events • our best defense against chaos is ADVANCED NOTICE • requests for rescheduled games must have the consent of both Coaches and must be

escalated to the U10 Age Director at least 10 days prior to the originally scheduled date • only exceptions to this 10 day advance include extreme weather, unplayable field

conditions, or unexpected absence of a referee • once the schedule is set, please do everything you can to PLAY THE GAMES !

HOME team primarily responsible for rescheduling a cancelled game • 1) Opposing Coaches work together to secure a mutually agreeable date & time • 2) Home Coach works with their Club (NVYSL Rep, Field Coordinator, U10 Director,

Referee Assignor, etc., etc.) to reserve a Field & Referee • 3) Home Club contacts NVYSL U10 Age Director to confirm and formalize the reschedule • 4) NVYSL U10 Age Director updates scheduling information on NVYSL website • 5) Referee Assignment is completed using new data in scheduling system
