It helps identify the

product you want to

purchase, with a shorter

code so that you don’t

have to write a lot.

This column shows

the general category

(or commonly known

type) of the product,

such as “2U” or “T5”.

The effective energy

use of the bulb. Note

that this is not the

same as the halogen/

incadescent equivalent.

The industry standard

name of the fitting

the product uses, for

example “E27” or

“GU5.3”. You’ll need

a matching base type

with the fitting you’re

installing the bulb into.

This range describes

the limits of voltage

under which the

product can function.

Exceeding these limits

could cause damage to

the product.

Measured in degrees Kelvin

(K), color temperature is

the measurement of the

color tone of light, which

effects our psychological

state as well. Higher

color temperatures mean

cooler light, and lower the

color temperatures mean

warmer light.

CRI Beam Angle Light Output Efficacy Diameter

A measure of how accurately

a light source displays

colours. The higher the CRI,

the better the light source

is at rendering colours

accurately. A high CRI (above

80) is preferred in the home.

The degree of width in which

light eminates from the

light source. Narrow beam

angles will create a spot

light in a smaller area and

a broader beam angle will

flood a larger area with

light.

One of the most important

considerations in selecting

a light source. Light output

is measured in lumens

at the light source. One

lumen equals the amount of

light generated by a single

standard candle.

Luminous efficacy is a

measure of how well a light

source produces visible

light, measured in lumens

per Watts (lm/W). It is not

similar to efficiency, which

is measured in percents (%).

The width or diameter of the

light bulb at its widest point.

Size becomes important

when choosing the right bulb

for different fittings.

There’s a lot more to light than just brightness.

When building a home,

there are so many things to

consider: the designer sofa,

matching artworks, textiles,

colors, the shape of the

tables and so on.

We want everything to be

stunning — after all, it is the

space we will be spending a

large part of our days.

Different light color have differing side-

effects to the human physiology. For

consumers in Indonesia: Ever wonder

why some supermarkets like Carrefour

uses very white lights whilst others like

Ranch Market uses warmer color? Would

you agree that you would generally feel

more energetic at the former and more

relaxed at the latter?

The scientific explanation for this

phenomenon is this: there is a tiny part

of the brain called the Suprachiasmatic

Nucleus (SCN) located just above our

optical nerves. This brain tissue captures

and interprets the light captured

by our retina, and tells the body to

produce certain hormones or chemicals

accordingly. This is called the body’s

circadian rhythm, or for simplicity’s sake,

the body-clock.

When designing lighting for your home,

we can recreate this body-clock by

simulating the color of sunlight that best

supports our activities.

For example, to achieve the highest

level of productivity, we can simulate

the color of sunlight at around 14:00-

17:00, which would be “bluish-white” at

around 5500K to 6500K.

Alternatively, to get a more relaxed

atmosphere, we can simulate the

color of sunlight before our body stops

producing melatonin (which makes us

relaxed and sleepy), which would be

“yellowish” at around 2700K-3000K.

The picture on the next page illustrates

this very point. Which atmosphere do

you like best? Or, mix and match to get

a different feel in the different rooms of

your house. Your choice.

Every light source has a distinct character, from the warm, dim glow of a candle to the blue, bright beam of a street light. Brightness, measured in lumens, is one part of that character; the other part is color temperature.

Warm Color Temperatures

Most homes look best in warm-toned light. This is for several reasons, but the first one is a home’s color scheme. People tend to decorate homes in warm earth tones—reds, oranges, and yellows — which warm light enhances. In addition, people tend to look better in warm light. If your grandmother had a lighting makeup mirror with adjustments based on “office,” “home,” and “evening” lighting, you may remember that you looked a lot better in “home” and

“evening” modes than “office” mode. That’s because (you guessed it!) those modes had lower color temperatures than “office” mode.

Cool Color Temperatures

While warm color temperatures are the residential standard, some people prefer higher or “cooler” color temperatures. Because of their neutral tone, it’s common to see color temperatures of 4000K or higher used as task lighting in offices.

Moreover, people often perceive higher color temperatures to be brighter than warm temperatures, while others feel cooler light looks “cleaner.” Finally, higher color temperatures can enhance homes with

cooler color schemes, especially those with a lot of blues and whites.

Full Spectrum Temperatures

Color temperatures of 5000K to 6500K approximate the color of light outdoors on a bright, sunny day. The cast of the light can be a very pronounced blue and can seem harsh to some people. It’s unlikely to see color temperatures of this range in homes, though there is a trend of installing “full spectrum”

bulbs in offices as research shows that they are associated with higher productivity.

Keep your application and color scheme in mind and make sure to buy the bulb with a color temperature to match.
