    Part of the months, XARIE TIM units maintained a high level of activityduring September. Pheow positions and installations along the coast weretaken under fire at evex7 opportunity. Part~icipation in ground sweepswith blocking patrol~s and naval gunfire support became more frequent as

    * ~liaison with forces ashore continued to improve. Surveillance ope~rationsresulted in a total of 77#058 detections of junks and sampans. Patrolsinspected 35,180 of these craft and boarded another 169633. 1.otal of779 persons we-re detained from the craft boarded due to !=proper papersj,repeated violation of fishing restrictionss, or suspicious act-J67I't 7 * Inadditlion, the surveillagnce units made 1,3,38 detections of steel-hu.Uedvessels in X&RK-T TIlKE areas during Serptember. A total of 728 inspectionsand 52 boardings found all to be on innocent passage.

    During one 21.-hour period of poor weather when *Suwift" boats wereunable to remain on som patrol. stations, PCF 21. arned special recogni-tion. While operating in extremely poor weat her-PC ? 21 engaged fourevading sampana, sinking ones killing three of the evaders and probablykilling two others with her accurate mortar and machine-gun fire. O~verallduring the month XLAJC= TIKE units carried out 794 navUa. gunfirs missionsand participated in 40Q ground operations.     Mhe only casualty due to enery fire wa3 received on the afternoon of9 September, As PC? 96 closed the shoreline 18 miles southwest of Tan Anfor a harassment and interdiction mission heavy automatic weapons and re-coilless rifle fire was received. Th e flae was returned killi:- an estimatedfive of the enemy as the *Swift* boat cleared the area. On e crwiman died ofwounds received in the action.

    On 9 Saptaiber USCCC PO12 T3U: sighted a sampan displaiying a VietCong flaag attempting to evade near the moath of the Bassac ?iver. T"Ihesampan was stopped by warning shots from the cutter. Th e three occupants of the craf, two me n and a woman, were detained as arobabls Uiet Cong.

    BA D 111 was again attacked on the Ben Tre River on the 16th; at 1053from the east bark 6 milea southeast of Ben Tre, and at 1127 from bothbanks 2 miler east of Ben Tre. A mortar attack at the junction of theDen Tre River and the Chet Say Canal accompanied the second attack, Three:1avymen were vounded during the day and two ATC Is were d-xa-aaed,

    On the days 17 September, BAD -as :iredon f'or the If-htime on the Ben Tre River, this time from tha aouth bark one mile east ofDen Tre. Only one r.coilless-r.fle round was fired at the assault craftand the -ire was not returned because it came from a populated area.There were no casualties.

    On the same dayvutsofRD 92went to the ssistance of G AM WARDENPER's on the Ham Luong RIver, On arrival the assa"lt craft received recoil-less-rifle, automatic weapons and small arms fire from the west bank ofthe river, 3 miles eaet of Mo Cay. The fire was suppressed. One Navymanwas wounded as a result of a "cookoffr on a hC-m gun.

    At 0900 on 22 September PA D 131 was ambushed while landing 6/31stInfantry Division troops on the Ba Rai Stream 3 miles east of Cai Be. TheViet Cong firA automatic weapons and rockets from both banics, Riverineasaault craft Lired all weapons, includizrn flame, suppressing the enemyfire. Nine Navymen were wounded.

Land sweeps by .ARVN, RF/PF and USMC elements were supported byTask Force CUI R.ATER PBRs and MARKET TLM'" PCFs as well as the U. 3. Navyadvised coastal groups. The operation, 11-20 September, accountzd for72 eny soldier3 killed, 21 of which 'tere credited to the VIN sailors.The sailors also captured 30 Viet Cong cvd 6 other enemy suspects. Anadditionral 444 '?tet Cong and 78 suspects were reported captured by theallied forces. Friendly casualties were light; one ARM' killed and 9wounded.

The Village Assistance Team (VAT) isthe center fo r these accomplishments, There are currently 14 teams,,made up of two to four men each, living among the people in selectedvillages within the city, with four more teams ;lanad.
