A Sincere "Thanks" To the Residents of Hillsdale It may surprfscs many of our residents to know that every ton of paper recycled saves 17 trees. As a result, your cooperation with the Hiltsdale recycling program has resulted in the saving of over 19,000 trees in 1989. We have saved over 35,000 trees in the past two years. These graphic statistics help to illustrate the tremendous value of our local recycling program.

a

Both public awareness and public cooperation are steadily increasing. The result has been that Hillsdale has recycled 20 percent more paper in 1989 than it did in 1888, and we have recycled 53 more tons of paper through May, 1990, than in the first five months of 1989.

This same success has been realized in other areas of' recycling. We recycled 44 perced more glass, aluminum and plastic in 1989 than ig 7'988; and we are far ahead of last year's recycling !ate through the end of May of this year.

..I

Also, the grass recycling p!&ram is working extremely well. We recycled approximately 150 tons of grass during May. At this rate qe will recycle over 36 percent of our waste -- well ahead of the State-mandated 25 percent level. (You w/ll find a new sticker for your grass container enclosed with this newsletter.)

Your efforts are not only holding down costs, since we pay less to recycle than to bury these recyclable materials, but they are also helping to preserve our environment

Since ever more materials are being recycled by all towns, the processors of recyclables are becoming much fussier about receiving clean glass and plastic. Plastic bags cannot be used for packaging grass, and food or other waste cannot be mixed with grass.

Paper Bags For Grass Cuttings Recycling grass must be done in paper bags The Borough has contacted a number of companies that distribute the large brown paper bags used for grass cuttings, and they can be found in our local stores and shopping center. If you don't see them on the shelves ask the local shopkeeper, who will be glad to help you.

Enclosed with this newsletter are two recycling stickers, one for regular recycling and one for the grass clippings. If you meed additional stickers, they may be picked up at the Borough Clerk's office in the Municipal Buitding.

Again, our thanks for your efforts to date. Your cooperation has made Hillsdale one of the environ- mental leaders in the state of New Jersey. We have a proud record to maintain.

Redecomting? Upgrading? Moving? Here's a Helpful Hint

Instead of throwing away old or unwanted furniture and appliances, Briggs O'Neil at the Reusable Resource Exchange in Hackensack (489-9454) will arrange for an organization in need to pick up your unwanted items for repair and reuse. The service is free and value receipts are available for tax credit. Corporate donations will also be accepted. The Reusable Resources Exchange is part of the Volunteer Bureau of Bergen County.

Gates for Parkview Drive Crossing gates are to be installed at the Parkview

Drive railroad crossing in the late summer. These gates, requested by the Borough for many years, will provide badly needed protection for our residents and neighbors and the traveling public.

New Jersey Transit Cleanup You have probably noticed New Jersey Transit's

cleaning project along the right-of-way between the industrial area and the Westwood town line. New Jersey Transit responded very quickly when its management was apprised of the conditions. A few pictures which weretaken by the Borough and shown to the authorities at New Jersey Transit certainly did more than a thousand

The placement of decorative litter receptacles in the downtown area along Broadway and Hillsdale Avenue, a new project that was begun last year, will be completed shortly. Thesb receptacles, purchased through the Clean Communities funding from the state, will help to reduce litter and beautify our town.

The Weirimus Road- Hillsdale Avenue Intersection

Work on the improvement of the intersection at Weirimus Road and Hillsdale Avenue will continue through the summer and is scheduled for completion b) the end of the year. The County-sponsored project has been estimated to take 18 months, but favorable condi- tions should enable its completion this year.

Plan a Stonybrook Summer

F; -- - The first day of summer officially arrived in Hillsdale :- . 1 last week and at the same time, Stonybrook, Bergen -- - County's finest municipal swim club, opened for the

2 : season and accepted the challenge presented by the long, hot summer.

No other town in all of Bergen County has a finer municipal recreation facility than Hillsdale, for - Stonybrook is much more than a superior swim club,

. - it is a twelve and one-half acre family recreation -- . - center in the heart of the Pascack Valley and it is -.

available to the families and friends of the Borough of Hillsdale from now until Labor Day.

Residents of Hillsdale who are not members of Stonybrook are invited to visit the Swim Club at any

time and tour the grounds -- the Olympic-size swimming pool, the wading pool, the tennis courts, the snack bar, the picnic and barbecue area, etc. Enter the club from the main entrance on Cedar Lane during regular hours, 12 noon until 7:45 in the evening.

Membership rates for the 1990 summer season remain the same as last year. All renovations are just about completed. The place is sparkling and the facilities are great, and right now is the time to plan for a "Stonybrook Summer*'.

For complete information, call Stonybrook at 358-5023 from Monday to Friday between 9:00 and 1 1 :00 A.M.
