Background:IfyouareusingtheUofSCourseToolsforthefirsttime,pleasereviewtheCourseToolsBasicdocumentbeforeusingthisdocument.IfyouareusingtheGradeCenterforthefirsttime,pleasereviewtheGradeCenterBasicsdocumentfirst.Notethatthescreenshotscontainedwithinmayvaryfromyourcourse,especiallywiththeoptionsavailable.Customizationofyourcourseallowsyouasaninstructortoaddmanyteachingtools.
STEP Action:UsingtheGradeCenter
Background TheGradeCenterinUofSCourseToolsisausefulinteractivetool,allowinginstructorstorecorddata,calculategrades,andmonitorstudentprogress.Instructorscangeneratereportstoassesscourseparticipation,aswellasdeterminewhichassignedgradestoshowtostudentsontheirMyGradespage,includingcolumnsdisplayingperformanceresults.Instructorscanalsocreategradecolumnsforanyactivitiesorrequirementstheywanttograde,suchasspecialprojects,participation,orattendance.ColumnsintheGradeCentreareautomaticallycreatedforanassignmentortestiftheinstructorhascreatedthisiteminCourseTools/Blackboard.
STEP Action:GradingAssignments
Background Whenanassignmentiscreated,acolumnisaddedautomaticallytotheGradeCenter.Anassignmentthathasbeensubmitted,butnotgraded,isindicatedintheGradeCenterwithagreenexclamationmark—the“needsgrading”icon.AssignmentsthatneedgradingcanbeaccessedfromtheGradeCenter>NeedsGradinglink.Instructorshavetheoptiontogradeassignmentsanonymously.
Action:AccessingtheNeedsGradingpage
1. Forcourseswithmanyenrolledstudentsandgradableitems,theNeedsGradingpagecanhelpyoudeterminewhichassignmentsandtestsneedgradingfirst.Forexample,youcansortbytheduedatetoensureyourfinaltestsaregradedbeforeyourschool'sdeadline.IntheControlPanel,expandtheGradeCentersection,andselectNeedsGrading.
2. ThetotalnumberofitemstogradeappearsontheNeedsGradingpage.

STEP Action:Filterandsortattempts
1. UsetheFilterdrop-downliststonarrowthelistofitemstogradebyCategory,Item,User,andDateSubmitted.Forexample,makeselectionsinboththeCategoryandItemdrop-downliststodisplayassignmentssubmittedbyaparticularuser.
2. ClickGo.ThefiltereditemsappearontheNeedsGradingpage.
3. Clickanycolumnheadingtosorttheassignments.Forexample,sorttheassignmentsbyUserAttempt.
4. ClickGradeAllontheActionBartobegingradingtheassignmentattempts.

5. ThefilteredassignmentattemptsappearontheGradeAssignmentpageintheordertheyweresortedandfilteredontheNeedsGradingpage.
6. IntheSubmissionsection,selecteachsubmissionparttoviewitintheleftpane.Iftherewasany
textaddedtothesubmission,itwillappearinSubmissionText.Allattachmentsappearasthefilename,andneedtobedownloadedtoview.
7. ExpandtheGradebox,andenterthegradeyouwishtogivethestudent.Providefeedbacktotheuserifnecessary.

8. ExpandtheGradingNotes–Privatetoleaveanynotesforyourselforotherinstructorsabouttheassignment.
9. Tosavethecurrentstudent'sgradeandmoveontothenextsubmission,clickSubmit.

STEP Action:GradingAnonymously
Background Anonymousgradingallowstheinstructororteachingassistanttogradestudents’assignmentsandprojectswithoutseeingtheirname;thisisusefulifaninstructorwantstoremaincompletelyimpartialtostudents'attemptsatassignments.
1. Toaccessthisfeature,fromundertheControlPanel,selectGradeCenter,andthenclickNeedsGrading.
2. Locatetheassignmenttobegraded,clickthechevrontoopentheContextualmenu,andthenselect
GradeAnonymously.
3. Inanonymousgrading,allidentifyinginformationishiddenandattemptsappearinrandomorder.
EachStudentisassignedanumber,suchasStudent3.IntheReviewCurrentAttemptsection,reviewthestudent'sassignmentattempt.
4. IntheGradebox,typethegradeforthestudent.Providefeedback,ifdesired.

5. ClickAddNotestoleaveanynotesforyourselforotherinstructorsonthegrade.
6. Tosavethecurrentstudent'sgradeandfinish,clickSubmit.
Background UsingSmartViews
ASmartViewisafocusedlookattheGradeCenter.SmartViewsshowonlythedatathatmatchesasetofcriteria.SmartViewsareusefultoquicklyfinddatawhentheGradeCenterincludesagreatnumberofstudentsandcolumns.WithSmartViews,instructorscanviewtheprogressofanexistinggroup,studentperformanceforaparticularitem,aswellasindividualstudents.Instructorscanalsoperformaquerytoselectstudentsusingacombinationofattributes.DefaultandFavoriteSmartViewsappearintheGradeCentersectionoftheControlPanelasanindentedlistunderFullGradeCenter.YoucantagSmartViewsasFavoritessotheyappearinthislistandcanbeaccessedeasily.
STEP Action:CreatingSmartViewsintheGradeCenter
1. IntheGradeCenter,pointtoManageontheActionBartoaccessthedrop-downlist,andselectSmartViews.

2. OntheSmartViewspage,clickCreateSmartViewontheActionBar.
3. OntheCreateSmartViewspage,typeaNamefortheSmartViewandaddanoptionalDescription.
SelecttheAddasFavoritecheckboxtomaketheSmartViewaFavorite.TheFavoriteSmartViewwillappearintheGradeCentersectionoftheControlPanelintheindentedlistunderFullGradeCenter.
4. SelecttheTypeofView:
• CourseGroup:Subsectionsofstudents.Coursegroupsmustbecreatedbeforetheycanbeusedasselectioncriteria.
• Performance:Studentperformanceonasingleitem,suchasamid-termexam.• User:Individualstudents.• CategoryandStatus:Basedonacategory,suchasAssignmentorTest,userorusers,and
gradestatus,suchasCompletedorNotAttempted.

5. SelecttheappropriatecriteriatohelprefinetheTypeofViewselected.TheTypeofViewselected
determineswhatshowsintheSelectCriteriasection.UnderUserCriteria,selectthegradecolumnfromthedrop-downlist.
6. UnderCondition,selectthecriteria,suchasGreaterthanorEqualtofromthedrop-downlist.
7. IntheValuebox,selectavalue,suchasaGroupNameortypethescoreorpercentageagainst
whichthecriteriaandconditionwillbeassessed.
8. UnderUsers,selectAllUsersfromthedrop-downlisttoincluderesultsforallstudents.Choose
SelectedUsersfromthedrop-downlistandselecttheindividualstudentsneeded.HolddowntheCRTLkeytoselectmultipleusers.NOTE:ThisoptiononlyappearsifyouhaveselectedUserastheTypeofView.
9. UnderCategories,selectacategoryfromthedrop-downlist,suchasAssignmentorTest.ThisoptiononlyappearsifyouhaveselectedCategoryandStatusastheTypeofView.
10. SelecttheFilterResultsfromthedrop-downlistbyselectingthecolumnsorgradestatus,suchasCompletedorNotAttempted.AllColumnsischosenbydefault.Toselectmultiplecolumnsintheselectedcolumnsoption,holddowntheCRTLkeywhilemakingyourselections.
11. ClickSubmittofinishcreatingtheSmartView.

12. ThenewlycreatedSmartViewnowappearsintheGradeCenterdropdownlist,alongwiththedefaultSmartViewsofAssignmentsandTests.
STEP Action:CreatingaCustomSmartViewwithmultiplecriteria
Background WhenbuildingaSmartViewusingtheCustomTypeofView,multipleusercriteriacanbeused.DetailedSmartViewscanhelpInstructorsbuildacomprehensiveorganizationofGradeCenterdata.ThatinformationcanbeusedtoimproveStudentperformance.CriteriaareaddedasANDstatements.Aseachcriterionisadded,itisassignedanumber.ThisnumberisreflectedintheFormulaEditorbox,whichappearsbelowthecriteria.Eachcriterionthatisaddedcanhaveacondition,suchasEqualto,Greaterthan,andLessthan.Eachconditionrequiresavaluetocomparewiththecondition.
1. ThefollowingexampleillustratesthecreationofCustomSmartViewswithmultiplesearchcriteria.AnInstructoristeachingacoursewithtwoitemsthataccountforthemajorproportionofthesemester’sgrade,aMid-termExam,andaFinalExam.TheInstructorisinterestedinseeingwhichStudentsscoredbelowa60(failinggrade)oneitherexam.IntheGradeCenter,pointtoManageontheActionBartoaccessthedrop-downlist,andselectSmartViews.

2. OntheSmartViewspage,clickCreateSmartViewontheActionBar.
3. OntheCreateSmartViewspage,typeaNamefortheSmartViewandaddanoptionalDescription.SelecttheAddasFavoritecheckboxtomaketheSmartViewaFavorite.TheFavoriteSmartViewwillappearintheGradeCentersectionoftheControlPanelintheindentedlistunderFullGradeCenter.
4. SelectCustomfromtheTypeofViewlist.Thiswillcreateaqueryforselectingstudentsusingacombinationofattributes.
5. SelectUserCriteriafromthedrop-downlist.Inthisexample,theuser’sgradeontestischosen.
6. SelectaConditionfromthedrop-downlist.Inthisexample,wewillchooseLessthan,aswewanttoseetheuserswithlessthan60onthetest.
7. IntheValuebox,selectavalueforthecondition.Inthisexample,ascorebelow60denotesafailure.

Asdataisselected,aqueryformulaisbuiltintheFormulaEditorbox.Thefirstsetofcriteriaislabeled"1."
8. Toaddasecondsetofcriteria,clickAddUserCriteria, andmakeadditionalselections.Thesecondsetofcriteriaislabeled"2."Continuetoaddmorecriteriaasneeded.
7. ClickManuallyEdittochangetheoperatorsandinsertparenthesestoedittheformula.
8. FilterResultsinordertodisplayonlytherequiredinformationandcolumns.
9. ClickSubmittosavetheSmartView.
STEP Action:WorkingwithGradingSchemas
Background Gradingschemasprovidetheabilitytodetermineanunconventionalgradingsystembasedontheconventionalscoresystem.Agradingschematakestheactualpointsscoredonagradeditemandcomparesittothetotalpointspossibleforthatitemtoderiveapercentage.Thispercentageismappedtoarangeofscoresanddisplaysagrade,suchasaletter(A,B,C)orPass/Fail.Gradingschemasalsoprovidetheabilitytoenteranunconventionalscore,suchasP,andreturnascorevalue,suchas75%.Uponcreation,agradingschemaisincludedasanoptioninthePrimaryandSecondaryDisplaydrop-downlistswhencreatingandeditingcolumnsintheGradeCenter.Defaultgradingschemasinthedrop-downlistsinclude:Score,Letter(A,B,C),andPercentage.

Action:CreatingaGradingSchema
1. IntheControlPanel,clickonGradeCenter,thenFullGradeCenter.
2. TheGradeCentre:FullGradeCentrescreenwillappear.HighlightovertheManagemenu,thenselectGradingSchemas.
3. TheGradingSchemasscreenwillappear.SelecttheCreateGradingSchemabutton.
4. TheCreateGradingSchemascreenwillload.EnteraNamefortheschemaandaDescriptionifdesired.Inthisexample,theschemaisnamedNewSchemaandadescriptionhasbeenadded.
