• 5.4 million children have been affected by typhoon Haiyan. Emergency assistance is urgently needed to prevent deterioration in their health and nutrition and to ensure their safety. In the absence of shelter, food, emergency health care, clean water and sanitation, the lives of these children could quickly become at risk.

• Many schools were damaged by the cyclone.

Learning materials and furniture were also destroyed. Temporary learning spaces must be set up as quickly as possible to provide safe spaces for children to learn. The re-opening of day care centres should also be considered a priority to enable Early Childhood Education to resume.

• 1.8m children have been displaced. Rapid child

protection needs and capacity assessments must be undertaken as soon as possible. Child friendly spaces, or similar programmes, should be provided to re-establish routine, provide psychosocial support, an opportunity to play, and informal learning.

• About 25,000 births are expected in the next month

in the affected areas, where many health facilities have been destroyed or are hard to access. Giving birth in unsanitary and unsafe settings without any skilled medical assistance represents a huge risk to the lives of these pregnant women and girls.

• The Philippines is an extremely disaster prone

country – it has been affected by close to 200 disasters over the last decade. Building back better to increase communities’ resilience to disasters must guide the recovery and rehabilitation process. Donors and the Philippines Government must provide adequate funding to “build back better,” enhancing preparedness for future disasters. Good recovery must leave communities safer by reducing risks and building resilience.
