Types of Language Test: According to Language Skills

This type of language test can also be called as skills testing as the four language macro skills of listening, reading, writing, speaking were in various degrees tested (in strict isolation from one another) as a supplement to discrete point test (separate testing of individual points of knowledge).

Focuses on the four macro skills:

Listening- deals with aural discrimination and listening comprehension

Speaking- focuses on oral production

Writing- routes for use of language conventions, manipulation of sentences, efficiency of language use, and ability to write sentences

Reading-centers on decoding, comprehension, vocabulary and reading skills

SPEAKING TEST

Part I, Picture Series. Twenty pictures representing simple actions to elicit single sentences. Two sample pictures with expected response printed below them.

Part II, Sustained Speech. The student talks for two to three minutes on an assigned topic presented to him at the time of the test. Separate topics assigned to lower level and upper level. Sample topics:

Lower Level:

You are talking with a Spanish-speaking person who has never been to United States. Describe him the town or city in which you live in. (If further stimulus is necessary before time is up:) This person is also interested in what a North American home looks like. Describe him the home in which you (or your parents live).

Upper Level:

You have met a young German in Europe who seems to you to have the makings of an outstanding American citizen. You resolve to try to convince him that he should migrate to United States. Talk to him about the United States so you may help him decide whether he would like to come. (If further stimulus is necessary:) Your young German friend is interested in American schools. Describe to him life at the school you attend.

Part III, Conversation. Fifteen exchanged utterances between student and a native speaker whose voice is recorded on a phonograph disc. The student is asked to imagine that he is speaking with a friend who is a native speaker of the language he is learning. The friend speaks to him, and immediately afterward another voice on the record tells the student in his native language to reply. For example, the friend may say:”Como esta usted?” and the English voice said: “Tell him you’re fine and ask how he is.” Pauses are provided in the record while the student makes his response. At the end of each paus, a buzzer warns him to stop speaking and prepare for the next interchange.
