TYPE ‘MC-PCS’ Cable Fittings Compatibility

There is a new MC Cable configuration on the market called “MC-PCS”. This specialty cable

was introduced in late 2014, and was designed to reduce the amount of wiring involved with todays

new LED and Fluorescent, SMART dimming systems.

Since this is a new MC Cable construction, there have been many field questions as to what

kind of fittings should be specified for terminating the cable to boxes, enclosures, and lighting fix-

tures. Also, there has been some confusion if cable fittings need to be specially Listed for this new

cable construction. The cable construction differs slightly from a standard MC Cable, as it contains a

separately grouped and insulated, 16/2 control cable, bundled in parallel with the current carrying

conductors. This new cable construction has recently been designated by UL as type: “MC-PCS”.

The Metal Clad Cable specification UL1569 (PJAZ), is currently poised to be amended to include

this new “MC-PCS” designation.

However, within the current fittings specification of UL514B (PJOX), there is no separate “MC-

PCS” fittings category designation, and therefore no specific fittings requirements for “MC-PCS” type

cable. This will likely change in the coming year as UL harmonizes all affected specifications. In the

interim, there will be no separate “MC-PCS” Listing required for fittings specified to be used

with the new MC Cable. The only requirement is that appropriately sized fittings Listed for MC

Cable are used.

Per NEC Articles 330.40, 320.40 & 300.15, ALL cable fittings must be Listed. The Listing

evaluations are made with cable constructions and dimensions which were available at the time of

evaluation. Among other requirements, UL514B specifies that a cable fitting used with AC/MC/MCI-

A cable must have a cable armor stop, which shall prevent the passing of cable armor completely

through the throat of the fitting – while allowing the insulated conductors pass through without

damage. This cable armor stop may be plastic or metal, or circular or oval. However, no matter what

the configuration, the cable stop shall restrict the cable armor from passing through, and allow all of

the cable conductors to pass through without restriction.

Bridgeport Engineering has evaluated the various type MC-PCS cable construction variations,

and developed a list of compatible and Listed fittings. These fittings are selected to handle the maxi-

mum diameter of the armor, providing a suitable armor stop, while allowing the conductor bundle to

pass through. Attached is a table which indicates Bridgeport’s current MC-PCS cable fitting options.
