Introduction to Type 1 Diabetes

Causes/ Risk Factors
★Autoimmune, genetic, and environmental factors
★An unknown virus can attack the immune system against the cells in the pancreas which make the body’s insulin
★Virus attacks in people who are genetically prone to the disease
Signs and Symptoms
★ Urinates a lot - the body tries to get rid of the glucose in the blood stream
★ More thirsty than usual - the body needs to make up the fluid it lost from urinating
★ Loses weight or can’t gain weight - the body breaks down stored fat and muscle for “hungry” cells
★ Fatigue - the body can’t use energy from glucose like it should
Treatment
★ People with diabetes have to check their glucose levels to make sure they in a healthy range and inject themselves with insulin.
★ Some kids and teens use devices that make it easier and less painful to do these things
★ Doctors and scientists are still researching for a cure to diabetes
★ Making sure people with diabetes are eating properly, exercising, and keeping up with their blood sugars in essential

help kids with diabetes and growth★ check blood sugar level often★ stay active and get regular physical
