Negative tracking is rarely desirable. This device should be used sparingly, to adjust one or more lines of justified type.

Adjusting the spacing across a word, line, or column of text is called tracking, also known as letterspacing. It is common practice to letterspace capitals and small capitals, which appear more regal when standing apart. By slightly expanding the tracking across a body of text, the designer can create a more airy field.

Normal trackingNormal tracking

Loose t racking

Normal tracking is when the spacing between letters in a column, word or line are equally aligned, and have an equal automated amount of negative space between them, in traditional letterpress, the negative space would have been the metal plate on which each letter was carved

Loose tracking is elongated negative space between letters, often used for visual effect or to harmonise letters which may not work well together in close space.
