Onemonth after the National Nuclear Regu-lator (NNR) advised the City of Cape Townagainst approving any development applica-tions near Koeberg Nuclear Power Station,the provincial government paved the wayfor the development of the controversialWescape “mini-city”.The provincial planning MEC Anton

Bredell, has recently given thenod to changethe city’s “defined urbanedge”.As a result, the city’s

biggest urban develop-ment project to datecould now potentially bebuilt between Melk-bosstrand and Atlantis.According to commu-

niTgrow (a joint venturebetween five companies)they have applied for theexpansion of the bounda-ry of Cape Town by amending the city’s Spa-tial Development Framework.Now thatBredell has given the green light,

communiTgrowwill have to go through var-ious other applications, such as environ-mental impact assessments, rezoning andsubdivision of the land.Nothing is imminent – developing Wes-

cape might only start in three years’ time,according to communiTgrow.TygerBurger reported in December in the

article entitled “No development allowed:16 km radius” that the NNR has advised thecity against approving any development ap-plications within a 16 km radius of KoebergNuclear Power Station up until July 2016.This is due to the emergency evacuation

time in case of a disaster

That means it is highly unlikely that thecitywill approve a project in this period thatis eventually expected to increase the popu-lation by 800 000.Once the exit routes from the power sta-

tion have been improved, the city could con-ceivably approve the controversial Wescapedevelopment.One unemployed woman who lives in At-

lantis and wishes to remain anonymoussays the people of Atlantis have never beenapproached for feedback regarding the

project thatwill ultimate-ly affect their lives themost.The lack of employ-

ment in the vicinity isone of her major qualms.“Utter madness,” she

exclaims.Her sentiments are

echoed by various com-panies and residentsalong the West Coast.If public opinion is any-

thing to go by, Wescape will have to contendwith plenty of opposition before it finallycomes to fruition.The 3 100-hectare proposal will be the first

mega-housing development in the city sinceMitchells Plain was established in the early1970s.The plan is to have it situated between the

N7 and Atlantis to the north-east of Melk-bosstrand.The R140 billion project involves 200 000

houses, 415 schools, 370 public service facili-ties and 15 sports complexes built over thenext two decades.It will mainly be focused on lower income

groups.The population of the area is expected to

reach 800 000 by 2036.

Aseven-year-old boy lost all his chemothera-pymedication in a fire in DuNoon last weekMonday afternoon.The fire destroyed 10 shacks from Si-

nethemba squatter camp and about 40 peo-ple lost all their belongings.One of the community development work-

ers, Tembile Nyoka, elaborates: “Some peo-ple also lost their identity documents andpermits as well as school books, so we needto pull together.”Nyoka says it is suspected that the firewas

started by children who “played with fire”.He is calling out to the community to con-

tact him and help those affected people out,but he also shared his opinion around thelack of access into Du Noon for fire and res-cue vehicles.“There is absolutely no space for the

trucks, so until we can create more space itis important that people in Du Noon aretrained to cope with fires and that there areeven ‘fire access points’ strategically spreadaround the inaccessible points,” he says.The City of Cape Town’s mayoral commit-

boundaries of kite surfing! The other day

he rode in a 60 knot storm. You can’t evenstand on the beach in wind like that,” hesays.It is, of course, this challenge that fuels

his desire.“When I started kiting it seemed to me

to be a limitless sport. You are not limitedto the power of a wave or the size of a boat.You can go as high as you want…”Graham adds, however, that someone’s

body can take quite a strain during awipe-out. Not all of his injuries have been theresult of kite surfing, but there have in-deed been enough to emphasise his lastpoint.“It’s hard to stay fit if you are not on the

RuthBerry, is one ofmanymade by support-ers ofMilo, a dog that was impounded by theAtlantis Animal Pound for biting and per-manently damaging a child’s hand.The child, Joline Janse vanRensburg,was

visiting a friend’s house and while waitingoutside the gate, their dog bit her hand fromthe inside of the palisade fence.Joline’s father, Rudolf, who was waiting

in his car, jumped out while he and Joline’sfriend screamed at the dog, a labrador andDalmation cross, who then let go of herhand.

Stitches“Joline did not make a sound. She just

turned to me, white as a ghost and said ‘lookwhat the dog did.’ Her hand was bleedingprofusely,” Rudolf says. He took her to theemergency unit at N1 City immediately,where she received 27 stitches.This happened almost three months ago,

but Joline is still in shock. Not only could

she not write her Gr 11 final exam, the in-jury has also left her with an ugly scar. Jo-line lost feeling in part of her right hand... as well as all her friends.Joline has become a victim in a Face-

book campaign to releaseMilo. In very lit-tle time, Milo has gained the support ofclose to 4 400 animal activists worldwideon www.causes.com website, after theowner made a plea to release him.Unbridled insults against the Janse van

Rensburg family were rife and on anotherpublic Facebook page of Kruvet AnimalHealth, owner of Milo, Sharné Jordaan,said “Ek sal daai etters sue wat my ‘kind’wegneem”.She also posted the cellphone number of

the law enforcement officer in charge ofthe impoundment unit, email addresses ofHelen Zille and promised to get the cell-phone number of Joline’s father so thatpeople can direct their anger to them inperson in order to release Milo.

TraumaOn 17 December, someone posted this

comment: “This 16-year-old girl must bepunished for causing poor Milo all thetrauma & suffering! If it wasn’t for her ir-responsible actions this would never havehappened!”The Janse van Rensburg family did not

respond to any of these comments, but fol-lowed the Save Milo campaign on socialmedia and made copies of everything. Inthe process they came across two otherpeoplewhohave been bitten byMilo in thepast and comments made by Jordaan onseveral occasions prior to this incident,asking advice about her dog’s aggressivebehaviour.Angie Janse van Rensburg, Jolines’

mother, says they do not want to make adecision about the life of the dog. “The lawmust take its course, but the fact is ourchild is innocent. She is the one who gotbitten here. We did not want to do it themedia way, we rely on what’s right. If Itake part in this debate on social media,people will attack me.”The campaign has also taken a political

turn: “We are starting a twitter storm tohelp saveMilo. If you are on twitter pleasetweet @helenzille to send Milo home andget your followers to retweet,” one of theorganisers of the campaign posted on the“Causes” website. Several people threat-ened not to vote DA if Milo was not re-leased.On 13 January, Milo was released and

returned to his owner.“The matter was first brought to my at-

tention during middle December. By thetime it was submitted to me there had al-ready been a lot of water under the bridgeand a fair amount of tension had arisen ascertain comments had been made on so-cial media about the injured girl,” says Ri-chard Bosman, head of safety and securityfor theCity of CapeTown,whoorderedMi-lo’s release.He says he opened communication with

both parties in the decision-making proc-ess.

Four chubby yuppies have teamed up withglamour girl Liezel van der Westhuizen totackle this year’s Iron Man challenge andraise money for a very worthy cause – thecommunities and projects supported by thecharity, the Signature of Hope (SOH) Trustin Century City.

SOH is a non profit organisation thatseeks to facilitate a means for successful in-dividuals and companies to uplift commu-nities in Africa. Their aim is to empowerpeople to make a real difference by raisingfunds through regular contributions fromtheir partners as well as the general public.

Brett, Bryan and Mike of deVere Africa,one of the world’s largest groups of interna-tional financial advisers, are trustees of theorganisation. Both Liezel “Slim” van derWesthuizen and David Taitz, the fourth“Fat Boy”, were introduced to the fundthrough association with deVere and areboth super energetic supporters of the pro-gramme and Trust.

Their purpose is to raise funds throughpersonal and corporate donations and to

disperse these through a series of grants toorganisations that are making real and sus-tainable differences in people’s lives.

Besides Liezel, none of them has much ex-perience in endurance sports but they arewilling to push themselves to the limit forsomething they believe in.

The initial idea was to do a half Iron Manchallenge and it originated in their officesin Cape Town where three of the five partic-ipants are part of management and trusteesof the charity. Mike “Fat Boy” Fannin, areamanager for the deVere Group, pushed thegoal to a full Iron Man. “Why do half whenyou could do it all?” and the target was set.

On 6 April, all five dedicated, if not de-ranged, characters will take to the beach atNelson Mandela Bay in Port Elizabeth toswim 3.8 km in the frigid Cape Sea, cycle180.2 km and top it off with a leisurely runof 42.2 km. As Brett “Fat Boy” Taylor, sen-ior area manager for the deVere GroupSouth Africa said: “We’re all ordinary peo-ple but we believe success comes from do-ing extraordinary things...”

The City of Cape Town’s Electricity ServicesDepartment has commenced an end-of-life re-placement project for electricity meters.

This project will initially focus on end-of-life prepayment meters but will be expandedlater to replace some of the older credit me-ters in the Greater Cape Town area. Eskomsupply areas are not included in this project.

The design life of prepayment meters is ap-proximately 20 years and the field failures ofthese older meters have reached the stagewhere planned replacement is required. Ap-proximately 10 % of prepayment meters cur-

rently qualify for replacement and the areasinitially targeted will be those where the den-sity of older meters is the highest.

The city has appointed Elex Khanyisa to dothese replacements over the next three years.

ago.“I came to South Africa to work. I only

work as an acrobat and have been doing sofor many years now,” he said.Muhidin has over the years also worked

for an international German circus produc-tion called Africa! Africa! and receivedtraining in China where he stayed for anentire year.“I started working for Africa! Africa! at

age 16 years. They saw me perform in thestreets,” he said.Muhidin started performing in the

streets of Tanzania to earn money for hisparents.

“My mother was unemployed and my fa-ther used to sell clothes.”Muhidin started Mambo Jambo in 2013

with four friends. The group practises onMondays and Tuesdays at the Multi Pur-pose Centre in Wesbank. Muhudin alsotrains little children in the area without re-ceiving payment.“The training is a lot of hard work. We

practise a lot.“We look on the internet for new ideas,

but often also come up with our own,” hesaid. Themost difficult trick to perform, hesays, is standing on someone’s head balanc-ing his body with only one hand.“It took me two years before I was able

to do that. Often when I train I always say‘no pain no gain’,” he said.

Brandon’s eyes tell a story his demeanourdoes well to hide.At first glance BrandonMoyo is just an 18-

year-old who is about to take on the world,but under the mask the Bloubergrant HighSchool kid is devastated and afraid.First his tragic story might drown one in

the reality of his situation before it resur-rects one with his courage.The only-child’s dad died when he was in

Grade 11 and then, during his matric finals,his mother also passed away.He is supported by a good friends of his

mom, friends and teachers, but ultimatelyhe is utterly alone.Everyone who knows about him is proud

of the fact that he achieved a Bachelor passin his exams, yet the one personhe is desper-ate to share it with now looks down at himfrom heaven.“I knowmymom is proud of how I’ve been

coping since the whole tragedy struck,” hesays.TygerBurger interviewed him just a few

hours before he headed to the University ofJohannesburg to apply to studybusiness sci-ence.Before the end of the interview the teenag-

er became the embodiment of sadness andperseverance.He will never forget that night of 10 No-

vember 2013.“Iwas about towritemy third paper – biol-

ogy.Mymomwas diagnosedwith a liver dis-ease, but she was doing fine, still going towork and stuff. But it was eating her up in-side. On the Sunday night at about 23:00 shewas in terrible pain – breaking out in asweat. She didn’t want to go to hospital, butI phoned her best friend nonetheless. Mymom’s friend took her to the hospital be-cause it was decided that I should be study-ing. I was writing history that Wednesday

and biology on the Friday.“Before my mom left she was smiling

and said that I should bring her stuff thenext daywhen I come to visit. The next dayIwokeup andwent to school and that after-noonwhenwewent to thehospitalweweretold...”His voice becomes fragile.“... she was gone... She once told me that

I’m the one with the brighter future... Thatis how I concentrated... It was very diffi-cult.”That evening his English teacher, Sue

McIntosh, came to Brandon’s home andprayed with him and comforted him.“She said that even though mymom has

passed away, there are people around mewho love me and can help me pushthrough.”The principal also phoned him and said

that Brandon could take supplementaryexams if he wanted, but Brandon refused.He got a B for history and aC for biology.“All I did was pray and trust God and re-

Grade 11 Elkanah House pupil Jasonswam in the Western Provincechampionships in December andqualified for Level Three nationals2014 as well as SA Youth Nationals2014. He won a silver medal for his1 500 freestyle and a bronze for his200 butterfly. Jason also swam inthe Reconciliation Day Swim atClifton Beach and finished firstoverall for a male swimming in aspeedo and not a wetsuit.

At the end of 2013 Elkanah House recyclingvolunteers collected used school shoes fromtheir primary as well as senior campuses. Manyof the pupils took off their shoes on the lastday of school as they walked out the schoolentrance, to donate to the less privileged, andplaced the pairs of shoes into boxes. The shoeswere collected by a volunteering mom, who hadthese refurbished by Barksole and Vivobarefoot,and then dyed the brown shoes to black to bedistributed to less fortunate schools. About 120pairs of brand new made­over shoes werehanded to SALT Projects for distribution in DuNoon and Atlantis. Here are moms Tina Slaterand Astrid Schon.

From testing the waters to jumping in,singer/songwriter, Daniel Crossing iscelebrating his first new year as a full-

time artist.With a string of interviews and songs be-

ing playlisted on local radio stations, DanielCrossing is hard at work promoting his mu-sic.“The last album that I wrote is a rock al-

bum,” Daniel explains, referring to his sev-en trackalbum,BetweenBorders andAngels.He prefers to describe his music as soul

rock though. “More soulful than anythingelse,” he adds.“Lyrics are very important to me and it’s

about expressing themeaning of those lyricsto the person listening,” Daniel says of hismusic.“I think the most significant event in my

life was when I was 13 and I wanted to writea song,” he jokes, but that’s unofficiallywhere Daniel’s musical journey began.He goes on to explain that he was trying

to write the song with his cousins and real-ised he couldn’t write a song.Officially, he was attending an opera con-

cert at City Hall and while listening to thesingers, he thought to himself: “I want to dothat.”“Since that day I took music lessons and

I started singing everywhere I could,” Dan-iel says.

Own workHe started out singing in musicals, an op-

era society and choirs, always singing otherpeople’s songs.“At some point I just got to this point

where I said: ‘Hey, but what about your ownstuff’,” Daniel explains, adding: “Aboutthree years ago I said: ‘Okay, let’s start a newjourney’.”He was standing in a music shop one day

and saw the CD of a fellow musical actor,which is where Daniel decided: “If he can doit, so can I.”As he was driving home a song came into

his mind and that was how Daniel eventual-ly did start writing his own music.It was also his long walks to work while

working in a restaurant which gave himtime to think and process and Daniel saysthat’s where his lyrics were born.

StoriesDaniel says the songs he recorded for Be-

tween Borders and Angels tell a story. “Eachsong tells a specific story and then togetherthey tell the story of starting out on thewrong side of the line, if you want to call itthat, and thenmovingover to the right side,”he explains.Daniel adds that while the album’s songs

are rock-based, there are also touches of reg-

gae rock and adult contemporary. “I tried toplay around with the sound a little bit,” hesays.

The City of Cape Town’s TableBay Nature Reserve wouldlike to alert residents to aplanned controlled burn of dryand dead bulrushes at the Ri-etvlei Wetland section of TableBay Nature Reserve betweenFebruary and April.

The city is applying to Sub-council 1 for a permit for con-trolled burning in order toconduct an open burn of thisreed bed vegetation to removeaccumulated dry and deadbulrushes that increase thefire hazard.

The area that will be burntis situated between PentzDrive and Otto du PlessisDrive in Table View.

The city’s EnvironmentalResource Management De-partment will ensure that theprocedure is conducted safelyand efficiently.

The controlled burn willtake place on a suitable week-day between Monday toThursday and will be complet-ed within the course of oneday where possible.

Neighbouring residents andland owners will be notified ofthe exact date of the burn bya letter-drop in their mailbox-es and email notificationswhere available. Measureswill be put in place to directtraffic away from any smokeand ash.

The achievements of Charlaine CoetzeeHirst are nothing short of remarkable,hence her induction into theWomen’s

Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) PlayersHall of Fame.Charlaine (40), who hails from Durban-

ville, was inducted into the Hall of Fame on10 December in Las Vegas, Nevada.It all started way back in 1978, where

Charlaine, then amere five years old, start-ed swinging clubs at the Durbanville GolfClub.

Durbanville“I started playing golf when I was 5 years

old. My dad was an avid golfer and I got totag along to Durbanville Golf Club whenev-er he would play. I used to take him on atchipping and putting contests all the time.“I have such incredible memories of

growing up playing golf at Durbanville andplayingwith the ladies’ section there. I wonthe Ladies Club Championship twice.“My mentor was Hylda Hamilton, who

took me under her wing. I was a WesternProvince provincial representative as ajunior and I also captained the FairmontHigh School golf team,” Charlaine reflectedon the good old days. She alsowon the Pren-tice Cup for u-21 females in WP.

ProfessionalAfter her high school career she packed

her bags for the USA to pursue her dreamof playing professional golf.“I managed to get a college scholarship

to Longwood College in Virginia and thatis where my “career” began. I had a greatcollege playing career – I won the NationalChampionship for Division II schools 3timeswhile at college and inmy senior year1995 I won three major awards – VirginiaWomen Athlete of the Year, Honda Awardfor Division II Athlete of the year and To-day’s Top Eight Award (highest honourthat theNCAA awards to college athletes),”said Charlaine.The tone was set for the professional

ranks after a dream amateur career, turn-ing professional in 1996 and playing on the

tour for nine years.She won the LPGA T&CP Southeast Sec-

tion Championship in 2009, including sev-eral other top 10 finishes during her career.She also had some success on home soilwhen se placed second in both the SouthAf-ricanWomen’s Open and TelkomClassic in2001.These days Charlaine is at the Whisper-

ing Pines Country Club as a Class A teach-ing professional. She runs a chippers campfor junior golfers.“I love teaching golf. I have my own busi-

ness – Golflessonsnc.com and I runmy ownjunior golf camps during the summerschool holidays. I return to South Africaonce a year and visit my family. I also al-ways try to get toDurbanvilleGolf Club andjoin the ladies group for a round or two.”
