MEMORIAL: ACCUSATIONS OF ‘POLITICAL FOOTBALL’
ANC ‘cashesin on Tatum’sdeath’GARY VAN DYK
@gvdcapejazz
“Tatum is no political football!”Those are the words of John
Prins, the uncle of the 3-year-oldTatum Prins who was gunned down in gangcrossfire in Bishop Lavis on 9 March. While the community ismourning the loss
of this innocent young life laid to rest onSaturday, the community came together onSunday tomarch through the suburb in pro-test against the shooting and rising crime inthe area.Organised by the Bishop La-
vis Development Forum, themarch endedwith amemoran-dum of demands for safety be-ing handed over to the police, but Tatum Prins’ family arenot happy with what they sawas an attempt to hijack theevent by local ANC suppor-ters.John Prins explained that
when the BDF offered to sup-port the familywith amemori-al service and protest march, they agreed on condition thatit not be politically affiliated. The BDF agreed to these conditions becausethe organisation has no particular politicallinks.“Before the march we were told that there
would be t-shirts printed with Tatum’s pic-ture on it and we felt that this would be fine, but onSunday just before themarchwewereinformed that these were not available,”says Prins.“We were then asked if the ANC t-shirts
could be distributed and we said no becausewe did not want this march to be affiliated
to one particular party.“Imagine our surprisewhenwewent outs-
ide to find that they had just ignored us andwere distributing the sweaters from a vanparked in front of our house.“We were very upset and some members
of the family came to complain but I did notwant to stop the march at that short notice, but still feel that it was wrong of them to ig-nore the family’s request at the time.“Our family is still mourning this loss
very heavily and feel people must not takeadvantage of our loss for political gain justbefore the election.”
Many community memberswho were taking part in themarch also complained whenthe t-shirts were handed out.“This march is not about
them (ANC),” said Andrew Fi-lander, a local resident.“They are taking advantage
of these people who will justtake anything for free and thisshould be about demandingjustice for this child and ma-king our community safe.”Another resident who did
not want to be named felt thatsome people would not take
part if they felt it was an ANC event.“This protest is about Tatum, not a politi-
cal rally, so why are they doing this? Somepeople are already saying that they don’twant to be part of this march now.”Prins was also asked about the announce-
ment by Marius Fransman, the Deputy Mi-nister of International Relations and Coope-ration, who was one of the speakers at thefuneral stating they would be starting abursary fund for the slain toddler.

“This came as a surprise to us as well andwe are glad that Tatum’s death is causing somuch concern, but we as a family must beconsulted at all times,” he said.
“The important factor that we as a familywould like to see is that this senseless killingis a catalyst for our communities to startstanding up against crime.
“All the speakers at various functionsover the past few weeks have been saying thesame thing. We cannot and must not allowanother young life to be lost to these gang-sters who are destroying our communities.”

Elsies River High School got their 60th An-niversary celebrations off to a good startwith the athletics team coming out tops intheir division.
They recently won the B-Section of theNorthern Zone Athletics with outstandingperformances in all age groups.
Head coach Basil van Nooie pointed outthat of the eight age-group divisions, theschool won six.
“Our boys took three and the girls equal-led them with three divisions as well,” hesaid.
“Our star performers were Kaylin Dani-els who won the 100m and long-jump in theunder-19 for girls, while Bradley Papier andDylan Meyer did well in the field events.”
While principal Leslie Brydon is veryhappy with the achievments of the team, hefeels that it is the precursor to some majorcelebrations for this milestone annivers-ary.
“This school has been an integral part ofthe community for the past 60 years and has
always prided itself on producing learnerswho go on to make positive contributionsto their community,” he says.
“We are still striving to maintain thoseaims and we will be celebrating in style thisyear.”
One of the highlights for the year is thecarnival that will be held in September.
“It’s been ten years since we last hosteda carnival, and former learners as well asthe surrounding community will remem-ber that it used to be the highlight of the lo-cal entertainment calender when it used tobe a regular event,” continued Brydon.
“We will also be hosting a musical duringMay, a golf day and dinner dance in Octo-ber, and a major memorial service in No-vember.
“Our school will also be taking part in thehigh school jam at GrandWest during Au-gust.”
Brydon also pointed out that these functi-ons are vital fund-raisers for the school andthey are appealing to former learners andlocal businesses to help out with supportand sponsorship.V For more information call 021 932 5085.

Sowat 35 000 gevalle wordjaarliks hanteer.
In 2011 se nasionale ontwikkelingsplan

Apartheid legacy undone by educationMICHELLE LINNERT
@linnertmb
The legacy of apartheid is being turnedon its head through quality education.
This is according to a Kuils River fa-ther of two gifted daughters who are rea-ching great heights thanks to the scholar-ship programme run by the Kay MasonFoundation (KMF) across the Western Cape.
“The KMF creates opportunities for child-ren who under normal circumstances will
never be able to attend the better schools inthe Western Cape,” said Tyrone Africa, proud father of Jessi and Lisa.
“The resources made available by donorswill contribute to levelling the playing fieldsfor the disadvantaged youth of our country. This is a process of overturning the legacyof apartheid,” he said.
Tyrone’s girls, both of whose high schoolcareers at Rhenish High in Stellenbosch are, andwere, funded through theKMF’s donors-hip programme, are showing the results of
the investment made in their young lives.Noëline de Goede, CEO of the KMF, said it
was important that someone like Jessi, cur-rently inGrade 11, received thebest academicsupport available.
“The foundation funds scholars who can-not afford aquality education themselves andwho have the potential to become great lea-ders of the future and who have academic po-tential,” said Noëline.
“Jessi is an exceptional scholar who is tru-ly a well rounded individual. She works ex-
tremely hard and excels academically, cul-turally and in sport.
“She always achieves top marks and sheportrays excellent leadership qualities,”she said.
Among Jessi’s 2013 achievements are:highest achievement in dramatic arts, ma-thematics, accounting, life orientation,Afrikaans first additional language, hig-hest achievement in grade 10 overall. Jessialso holds a number of prestigious culturalawards.
Top schoolsNoëline said KMF scholars are placed in
a top schools such as South PeninsulaHigh, Sea Point High, Norman Henshil-wood, Plumstead High, Spine Road High,Mondale High, Camps Bay High, Rhenish,Westerford High, the Cape Academy forMaths, Science & Technology and Livings-tone High.
“We pride ourselves on our individualapproach to our scholars and their fami-lies and believe that this is part of why weachieve such success,” Noëline said, ad-ding that the KMF offers additional tuto-ring for all their scholars on all school sub-jects.
“Weknow that a quality education is tru-ly the one equaliser in life,” she said.
When asked if their scholars ever feltsingled out, Noëline replied with a very de-finite “No.”
“They are awarded their scholarshipsbecause they have potential to become agreat leader in society and this is some-thing they are proud of. Our scholars arespecial young persons.”
The “strenuous” selection programmestarts when the learners apply in Grade 6.Thirty learners are then chosen to join theKMF’s Junior programmewhen they enterGrade 7.
This entails classes every Saturday from09:00 to 13:00 for the whole year, she said.
“At the end of the year we select 15 of the30 scholars to become funded Senior scho-lars.”
SupportedJessi told TygerBurger she started the
programme in 2011 when she was in Grade8.
“Seeing my sister develop into the confi-dent person she is, I was immediatelydrawn to Rhenish,” Jenni said.
Jessi said Rhenish’s outstanding recordof a 100% matric pass rate and its longevityon the list of the Western Cape’s top 20schools also attracted her.
“I amextremely grateful for this scholar-ship. I am able to focus primarily on mystudies without the worry of the financialburden which I would have placed on myparents,” she said.
Jessi said the school fees at Rhenishamount to about R20 000 per year.
“I feel proud of my achievements and amnever singled out or treated differently, in-stead I am supported by my friends and fa-mily and I am treated as any other studentis at Rhenish. No pressure is placed onme.”
Tyrone said the programme afforded heropportunities and experiences “that sur-passed our greatest expectations”.
“With my wife not being able to work Iwould never have been able to afford theschool fees. . . and the girlswouldneverha-ve been exposed to such amazing experien-ces as the school encourages.”
Tyrone said Lisa, now a medical studentat the University of Stellenbosch, had toldthem she would also give back and becomea KMF donor.

Redes waarom kindnie skolasties vorderElke jaar worstel duisende ouers,
sukkel, ontstaan dikwels ander probleme.
skolastiese probleme. Ander siektetoestande of versteurings
kan studie nadelig raak, byvoorbeeld hoëangsvlakke of depressie.

in the area.“It has become time for the youth to take
their positive place in our society,” saysDhakir Christians, one of the facilitators ofthe Bellville South Youth Development(BSYD) at their first meeting and electionson Saturday.“Youth are the backbone of thenationwho
can change the future of the society withtheir vision and courageous behavior.
“Theyarehere to showus theway forwardfrom the degradation that has overwhelmedmost of our communities.”
Big taskRandall Titus, Program Director for
BSYD, was excited about the initiative butfelt that they have a major task ahead tomake all youth aware of their role in life.“There’s still too many young people
caught up in negative activities,” he said.“Too many of them are still attracted to
materialismwithout seeing theneed toworkfor their futures, so they get caught up indrugs and crime.“They play video games all the time and
justwant to party, but herewewant to directthem on a road to future success in all as-pects of their lives.”Christians added that too many young
people have no vision of a positive future.“If they do have dreams they do not have
the drive to make any attempt at achievingthem,” he said.“It is our aim to help them take control of
this. We must motivate our youth, teachthem responsibility and goal setting.“My fear is that if we do not, we will soon
be supporting an entire generation of home-less and families constantly on welfare.“Things have to change, with our schools,
with the older generation being good role
models, being mentors, and with the youthwho are doing nothing to improve their cir-cumstances.”

Kinders jok selde oor misbruikESMÉ ERASMUS
@erasmusesme
Slegs 0,5 %vankinders jokoor seksuelemisbruik en daarom is volwassenes sehantering daarvan as ’n kind daaroor
Moenie jou skok of weersinwys nie.

Don’t be alarmed by the sounds of Miles Da-vis and Winston Mankunku echoingthrough the streets of Bonteheuwel, it’s partof a new initiative to give youth some direc-tion through jazz.
Gino Oliver in Leadwood Street is well-known for his passion for the music and hisneighbours are used to him hosting liveevents in his yard featuring some of the topacts in the Cape.
Now he is taking it a step further with theJazzYard Academy for youngsters in thearea.
“My love for the music comes frombackyard sessions in Bellville South whereI grew up,” he says.
“There were elders of jazz who were ourmentors, who opened their doors to the uni-que sounds of jazz, not just the internationalside but also the legends from our owncountry.
“The important thing is that they used themusic to give us direction, give us pride inthe legacy of achievement during thoseapartheid years and it inspired us to makesomething of our lives.
“That has been missing in our communi-ties, and I want to bring it back.”
Gino is taking it a step further as hewantstheproject to beamusical lighthouse for tho-se who find themselves lost through circum-stances of poverty and economic marginali-
sation. He is doing this by offering weekly music
classes for aspiring young musicians.“In this regard, God sent me a guardian
angel to help me,” he says as he points outChris Petersen who is showing an eager
group of youngsters their way around somecomplicated chords on the keyboard.
“They’re loving every minute of theirjourney of discovery and Chris wasted no ti-me in offering his services when he heardabout my dream of doing this for the child-
ren in the area.“This is only the start but I amhoping that
more musicians in the area will offer theirservices from time to time.
“We’ve just started and you can alreadyhear the improvement in their playing, butthe important part is that they are also ha-ving fun, and it’s keeping them off thestreets.
“Through themusic they are also learninghow to respect each other, and like inmy ca-se, make friends through the music that lasta lifetime,” he smiles.
Apart from themusic lessons Gino will al-so host listening sessionswhere hewill invi-te some of the elders of jazz to talk about thelegacy of the music.
“The main focus is getting our youth offthe street corners,” continued Gino.
“We want you to join us even if you don’twant to play an instrument, and the fun ele-ment is that we want to host performancesthat will feature the learners and teacherson a regular basis.
“This would then serve as a fundraiser aswell as a platform where students wouldshowcase their prowess.”
The session at 33 Leadwood Street in Bon-teheuwel start at 15:00 on Saturdays, and allare welcome to attend.
Donations of second-hand instrumentsare welcomed.V Further information call Gino on 073 441 6863 orChris on 071 886 1791. Also check out www.facebook.com/TheJazzYard.

Cape Town is in the running to be rankedalongsideBoston,NewYork, Berlin, LondonandChicago byhaving theCapeTownMara-thon included as a World Marathon Major.
Spearheaded by sports personalities Fran-cois Pienaar andElanaMeyer, thiswould bethe first step in the long term developmentplan stemming from a partnership betweenthe City of Cape Town, Western ProvinceAthletics (WPA) and ASEM Running.
The achievement would also be a first forAfrica.
Pienaar, who was MC at the launch of themarathon recently, said: “We believe thattheMotherCity is the ideal host for an iconicAfrican city marathon. If you take a look atthe leader boards ofWorldMarathonMajorsseries, you will see that they are dominatedbyAfrican runners, year after year. It’s timefor the continent to have its own World Ma-rathon Major that showcases our remarka-ble talent for long distance running, and in-spires the next generation of elite Africanrunners.”
The World Marathon Majors was laun-ched in 2006 by Boston, New York City, Chi-cago, London and Berlin Marathons as a se-ries offering US$1 million prize money splitbetween thewinningmale and femalemara-thon runners.
TheTokyomarathon, which does not havea long history but attracts over 30 000 run-ners, joined last year. Cape Town could benext.
What all theWorldMarathonMajors havein common is that participants and specta-tors are offered an unforgettable experienceof the city.
“I have had the privilege to race in many
big city marathons in different cities andcountries around the world,” said Meyer, who ran her first marathon in Boston in1994.
“Each city marathon offered its own uni-que but challenging experience; each beingemotional and rewarding. Itwill be a privile-ge to bring such a unique experience to CapeTown.
The 42.2km Cape Town Marathon takesplace on Sunday 21 September 2014, with thenew route to provide runnerswith a car-freeexperience of the city’s stunning naturaland cultural attractions.
Supporter zones will be situated at pointsalong the route and at the Cape Town Stadi-um, which will be the start and finish of therace.

I’m concerned that manypeople who apply for vacantpositions advertised are put offby the requirement for experi-ence. So what happens to freshmatriculants or FET graduateson the look-out for a decentoccupation to support them-selves? One response is thatinternships were created toprovide job experience. But in most cases intern-
ships last a few months, at besta year. These young adults arestill considered too inexperi-enced. They remain unem-ployed and are not given thechance to gain experience. There are not enough junior
positions available and notenough employers willing totrain fresh young employees.

In reply to ‘What to do withnuisance cats’ (TygerBurger, 19March), I’d like to say thefollowing. There is only one way to
solve this problem and that isto have the male cats neuteredand the females spayed – Iwould have thought that theSPCA would have mentionedthis.
Neutered tom cats do notsmell if they spray and do notfight other cats for a female inseason. The owners of the cats are
responsible for this – youcannot blame the cats for beingcats.

LEWENSKIEKIE
So verloor ook húlle geloof-waardigheid.

trede ’n drywer in hegtenis geneemwat 07:00 dronk was. Kan ons onskinders in so iemand se hande los?

UB40’s founding members have decided totake back the band’s name in an attempt tosave the group’s legacy.
As part of this mission, Ali Campbell, As-tro Wilson and Micky Virtue are on a worldtour and will be stopping in South Africa,to play in Cape Town next month.
Ali started UB40 in 1978 but left the bandin 2008, citing management problems. Hisbrother replaced him as lead vocalist.
“For five years I’ve sat back and I’ve wat-ched my brother Duncan crucify mysongs,” Ali told TygerBurger.
He says the last straw was the band relea-sing a country album (Getting over theStorm in 2013). “It was almost like a bad jo-ke.”
“Astro left because he couldn’t stand onstage doing country music,” Ali says.
The three go by the name UB40 Reunitedand tour as an 11 piece band.
While fans might be confused by two ver-sions of the band, Ali says : “If you wantto go to a UB40 concert with the original sin-
gers and original rhythm section, then it’sour gigs you should be coming to.”
For Ali, it’s all about the music. He grewup with reggae, along with his West Indianfriends in the South of Birmingham in En-gland.
He was 10 when he got African Herbsmanby The Wailers and still believes it is thequintessential reggae album.
UB40 are soon to finish a new album andSouth Africans can look forward to hearingsome of the new material, as well as old fa-vourites.
UB40 will play at Val De Vie Estate inPaarl on Friday 4 April, supported by Man-go Groove, Hot Water and Trenton & theFree Radicals.
The gates will open at 15:30 already andthe seven-and-a-half hour concert starts at17:45.
Tickets cost between R395 and R1495 andare available at www.webtickets.co.za.V Ali Campbell gave TygerBurger a special messagefor his Cape Town fans. Visit www.tygerburger.co.zato listen to it.V The new single ‘Reggae Music’ is available for freedownload, visit www.ub40.org/freedownload.

They stared wide-eyed at the popping, fiz-zing and exploding show at the Cape Town
Science Centre in Observatory, which washeld last week Thursday and Friday.
The presentation by Dr Graham Walker, known as the Science Show-off, stoked theimaginations of the gaping children.
Wild and interesting demonstrations fa-miliarised them with Sir Isaac Newton in acolourful manner and was ultimately a hugehit.V Go to www.tygerburger.co.za to watch a videoclip.

The Western Province Softball women’steam coach has heaped praise on her play-ers after the team’s National ProvincialChampionship (NPC) win over the week-end.Province suffered just one loss in the
tournament and beat Tshwane in the finalat Turfhall on Sunday to claim the title.Margi Hill, team coach, says credit
should go to each player in the team.“I’m a bit overwhelmed at the moment.
I feel extremely proud of the players’ per-formances,” says Hill.“You can have a game plan but if the
players don’t execute it then you won’twin. I can’t describe how proud I am of thegirls. They wanted this and they were de-termined.”Hill adds that she never for a moment
doubted her team’s ability to win the tour-nament.WP would have gone into the tourna-
ment as favourites and didn’t disappoint.Hill’s side kicked off with an 11-1 drub-
bing against Kwa Zulu-Natal on Wednes-day, and pulled off several other heavy vic-tories during the tournament.Limpopo were brushed aside 18-0, Cen-
tralGautengwere despatched 14-2, EasternCape were thrashed 15-0 and North WestProvince were pummelled 29-1.
Tshwane were the only side to beat WP,edging the hosts 7-5 on Saturday morning. However, Province made up for the loss
with a comfortable 9-2 win in the play-offson Saturday night and an 8-5 win in the fi-nal on Sunday.Province player Nicole Fortune says the
win was meaningful for all of her teammates.“It was nice to bring the title back to
Cape Town considering thatWestern Prov-ince didn’t take part at last year’sNPC, andwe hadn’t won for two years before that af-ter having held it for so long before then,”she says.“It was awesome to win and even better
to win at home. We had so much support,
with all the spectators coming out allthrough the tournament.”Fortune says the games were still tough
despite the massive scores posted by herteam mates. The Western Province men’s team nar-
rowly missed out on making the tourna-ment final after a loss in the play-offs.Province had suffered just two defeats
heading into the knockout stages - againstTshwane and Limpopo. However, the men’s side came undone
against Erkuruleni in the knock-outrounds, losing 3-2. Province had defeatedthe same Erkuruleni side 4-0 in the groupstages, and the loss meant WP finished thetournament in fourth.

All the thrills and excitement of the first Ca-pe round of the SouthAfrican championshipSuper Series is going be concentrated at Kil-larney on Saturday. As far as the categories are concerned, lo-
cal support is certain for Bellville based for-mer Bridgestone Production Car championJohan Fourie, whose motorsport career be-gan with his first race as a five year old“kortbroek” on the Killarney kart circuit. Now at the wheel of a BMW, he faces the
likes of former V8 kingpin Hennie Groene-wald and the young Gennaro Bonafede intheir potent Sasol RacingAudi S4 fourwheeldrive quattros. It won’t be easy. Then, while V8 enthusiasts are going to be
entertained by the likes of reigning champi-on Big Ben Morgenrood, Terry Wiford, ac-complished women’s driver Clare Vale anda host of other FordMustang drivers, the SASports andGT events are certainly not goingto be one horse races.Veterans like the abrasive Roelf du Ples-
sis, Willie Hepburn and Larry Wilford haveopted for Chev Corvettes, while the experi-
enced Mackie Adlam and Franco di Matteowill drive their JaguarXKR’s.Morganrood’svictory is by no means assured. If that’s not enough, there are the sleek
Shelby Can-Am sports cars. Powered by V6Nissan engines, they are much lighter andhave a better power to weight ratio than thebig V8’s. With drivers like Rui Campos andAlan Eve, they could also pose a threat. Then, the boy to watch in the national En-
gen Volkswagen Cup events is the 14 year-young Sheldon van der Lindewho is still notold enough to drive on public roads. Sheldonfinished second to 19-year-old Daniel Roweduring the first round at the Zwartkops Ra-ceway near Pretoria last month. Not overawed by the occasion, he remai-
ned close to the leader in both races and re-ceived the “Rookie of the meeting” award.Watch him.The comprehensive 14 race program in-
cludes races for national SAMidas FormulaFord andMidas Formula VW single seaters,as well as the Midas Clubman category andthe Mike Hopkins Superbikes.
